First, my most sincere prayers for the families of the victims.
Now, I stood by on the computer all day watching a horrible situation unfold. First there was 1 dead and at least one shooter.. Then 7 dead and 2 shooters. Then over 20 dead and 3 shooters. Then there was a pursuit in a forest with one man wearing camo who was armed. Then they supposedly caught the guy. Then there were possibly only 2 shooters. Finally there was one shooter with 4 guns who acted alone. Who were the people that reported more than 1 shooter, how did they mistakingly identify other shooters? And what happend to the guy running through the forest? I'm very confused.

If it's an election result or confirmation of an extremely 'highly-regarded' nature...they are VERY careful to report on anything without verifiable proof..but, it's still a race to report it first. In cases like this one today, the code is much more slack...they will report on all kinds of unverified things, and even in some cases MAKE STUFF UP just so they can get more attention during the coverage. The news is a game and as with any game..people cheat. With that said, I would ASSUME that there was some execs telling their producers to go ahead and run some of the tip-offs and other unverifiable things they heard just to get ahead in the game... Nancy Grace was totally making it up as she went along tonight like always.
