In regards to the lastest killings, the mother of the shooter should have had the guns locked up in a gun safe or trigger locks in place so no one could gain access to them. If she would have taken the time to properly secure them this would have never happened. thats the bottom line.

For all the comparison of guns to other things, people seem to lose track of what a gun is. A machine used to kill. And a large amount specifically designed to kill human beings. They enforce violence.
Of course, a skilled shooter can use it to incapacitate people as well, hence why I think law enforcement authorities should be allowed to carry them. But only for a lack of equally effective non-lethal weaponry.

I understand firearms in their entirety will not ever disappear. Criminals will always be able to acquire them and wars will be fought.

Stricter gun control in the USA is not the solution to preventing events like this. But it undeniably has a preventive function, and would certainly play a good part to keep your country more peaceful and safe.
I agree with many that it's unfathomable that no one read any signs about this man's psyche, and his intentions. I think society should be engineered towards a more caring attitude in all levels of social engagements. I realize that this requires a change in the cultural paradigm, and that it's not sure to prevent events like that. But again, it's part of a solution.

I understand that firearm manufactury is a large part of the economy. That it is a constitutional right to own arms. That many see owning a gun as taking responsibility for the safety of one's family. That the Goverment should fear the people's full-blown retaliation if it would commit warcrimes against them.
They're are valid points. But would you sacrifice the possible prevention for events like this rather than sacrificing the 'liberty' of owning firearms?
