The number 144,000 has religious significance for Christians because of its use in the Book of Revelation of the New Testament, where it appears three times:

This is what has been annoying me most about the 2012 thing. The popular media is reporting it as 'The Mayan Apocalypse'. But, to my mind at least, it is the correlation of so much other evidence that is worrying. The Mayan calendar is a mere part of the jigsaw that fits together and points to the end of 2012.

I'm not utterly convinced that something major will happen, but the convergence of so many things is interesting to say the least.
