Re: USA Gun Control Timeline, a social experiment...Post Sandy Hook to Present
This is the MOST honest statement to ever be uttered by the Constant Campaigner...Unfortunately (for us) the irony of those words seems to escape him

"Obama: 'Speeches Aren't Enough'

"Now's the time to turn that heartbreak into something real."

"President Obama called for action to be taken on gun control measures in a speech today at the White House, and said that "speeches aren't enough."

"And that's my attitude," Obama said. "Tears aren't enough. Expressions of sympathy aren't enough. Speeches aren't enough. We've cried enough. We've known enough heartbreak. What we're proposing is not radical. It's not taking away anybody's gun rights. It's something that, if we are serious, we will do...."

"Obama urges Congress to pass gun-control legislation 100 days after Newtown"

"President Barack Obama spoke at the White House with rows of grieving mothers behind him and publicly implored Congress to pass gun-reform legislation 100 days after the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shootings in Newtown, Conn.

"We've cried enough. We've known enough heartbreak. ... It's something that if we are serious, we will do," Obama said, Vice President Joe Biden at his side. "Now is the time to turn that heartbreak into something real."

As the mothers of children killed by gun violence wiped away tears, the president went on to urge the passage of background checks for gun buyers, and for loopholes to be closed for buyers who turn around and sell guns to criminals. He said 90 percent of Americans support background checks, as well as 80 percent of gun owners and 80 percent of Republicans.

Obama also suggested that too much time has passed since the shootings at Newtown. "Shame on us if we've forgotten. I haven't forgotten those kids. Shame on us if we've forgotten," the president said...."

posted a new thread today, but probably better put here. The MSM reporting today is heading way out into bizzaro land. No way this is incompetence, because the hyperbole got progressively worse as the day (3/28) went on.

POTUS did a press conference today regarding sandy hook. His level of insincerity bordered on theater. No remorse, no wisdom, just proffered anger. But he pauses, and almost smiles after every scold of the american people.

Almost like when a parent is disciplining a child for something they did not do. You do this to show other parents that they don't have be too tough on their child who actually did the act and will feel guilty enough already.

Also, the CNN reporting on the weapons used just gets more and more absurd. They have photographs of the weapons manifest from the "official" report, and they get it wrong in a progressively worse way.

This morning they said he had a SHOTGUN with two 30 round magazines. Those things dont exist, if they do, they gotta be toy like.

Then, just a few minutes ago they said he had a shotgun with two (2x) Seventy (70) round magazines. Which as a carried weapon would so worthless that not even the typical government employee rocking a Biden level I.Q. would buy them from a MIC contractor like G.E.

I am calling it. It was staged. If CNN is reporting it this way, I can not imagine what openly funded state media like MSNBC is saying. This is a clean up (disavow) operation for a false flag.

"Rubio joins group threatening to filibuster gun control legislation"

[link to thehill.com]

"Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) on Thursday joined a group of Republicans threatening to filibuster gun control legislation in the Senate.

“We, the undersigned, intend to oppose any legislation that would infringe on the American people’s constitutional right to bear arms, or on their ability to exercise this right without being subjected to government surveillance,” he wrote in a statement on his website.

“The Second Amendment to the Constitution protects citizens’ right to self-defense. It speaks to history’s lesson that government cannot be in all places at all times, and history’s warning about the oppression of a government that tries.”

Earlier this week, GOP Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.), Mike Lee (Utah), and Ted Cruz (Texas) wrote a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) pledging to “oppose the motion to proceed to any legislation that will serve as a vehicle for any additional gun restrictions.”

In adding his name to that letter on Thursday, Rubio gives the group some added heft and star power.

Next month, Reid plans to bring to the floor a bill that would expand background checks and penalties on straw purchases of firearms. The portion of the bill on illegal trafficking of firearms has bipartisan support, including from Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee..."

"Obama uses executive power to move gun control agenda forward"

[link to thehill.com]

"President Obama is quietly moving forward on gun control.

The president has used his executive powers to bolster the national background check system, jumpstart government research on the causes of gun violence and create a million-dollar ad campaign aimed at safe gun ownership.

The executive steps will give federal law enforcement officials access to more data about guns and their owners, help keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill, and lay the groundwork for future legislative efforts.

It is unclear whether the National Rifle Association will challenge any of the executive actions in court. A spokesman for the NRA did not return a request for comment.

The moves, which have not been widely touted by the administration, come as Obama ups his pressure on Congress to take action on gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. The Senate is expected to begin floor consideration of legislation when it returns in April.

Efforts to renew a ban in semi-automatic weapons with military-style features and high-capacity magazines have stalled in Congress. Democratic senators still hope to move gun control legislation that includes tougher background checks, but conservative Republican senators have threatened to filibuster it.

If approved by the Senate, any bill would then face tough sledding in the GOP-controlled House.

Gun control groups say Obama’s piecemeal approach falls short of what could be accomplished by legislation overhauling the nation’s gun laws. Still, they argue the actions remain important and will reduce gun violence.

“They’ve taken direct aim at some of the bigger problems in the regulatory part of the issue and they’re doing it in the right way and that’s going to be very helpful,” said Mark Glaze, the director of Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns group.

“Ultimately you need to close the loopholes in the law that will continue to undermine enforcement, but what they’re doing is precisely right.”

They also illustrate the administration’s power to change gun laws despite inaction on Capitol Hill, a practice the president may need to duplicate in other policy areas amid congressional gridlock.

Obama’s steps began the same day he unveiled his 23 gun control proposals in January, when he issued a memorandum requiring all nine federal law enforcement agencies to submit guns they confiscate to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) for tracing.

According to a notice sent by Attorney General Eric Holder last month, the agencies will have to submit a report to the Justice Department (DOJ) within the next month showing they are compliant.

The move, and several more like it, is aimed at strengthening the quality and quantity of records contained within the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), according to a DOJ spokeswoman...."

"Background checks remain in gun control limbo"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"When Congress returns from its recess, the battle over gun control will focus on a single issue: expanded background checks. And for now, the odds seem stacked against background checks moving forward in the Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is expected to introduce a modified gun control bill in April for a full vote on the floor. Provisions about semi-automatic weapon and high-capacity magazine clips won’t be part of the bill (although senators will be allowed to propose them as amendments).

But the contentious issue of background checks will be a central part of the legislation. Three other measures in the bill are expected to have an easier time in the Senate: harsher laws on illegal “straw purchases” of guns; more funds for mental health measures; and more funds for school safety.

Before Reid left for the Senate’s recess period for Passover and Easter, he vowed that broader background checks would remain in the proposed gun control bill.

“I want to be clear: In order to be effective, any bill that passes the Senate must include background checks,” Reid said on March 23.

Congress is back in business on April 8, and Reid’s commitment to keeping background checks in the bill will be tested in the coming weeks. A bipartisan group of four senators couldn’t agree on a background check measure that included mandatory registration of private transactions.

Senator Tom Coburn from Oklahoma was part of that group, but he objected to plans that would require permanent records of private transactions, over fears of creating a “national gun registry....”

"Sen. Jeff Flake: Universal background checks 'a bridge too far'"

[link to www.washingtontimes.com]

"Sen. Jeff Flake, Arizona Republican, said Sunday that universal background checks on all gun sales are “a bridge too far for most of us” as Democrats try to cobble together a package that can win 60 votes in the Senate.

“We do need to strengthen the background check system, but universal background checks, I think, is a bridge too far for most of us,” Mr. Flake said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “The paperwork requirements alone would be significant.”

Mr. Flake — along with Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican, and Democratic Sens. Mark Begich of Alaska and Mark L. Pryor of Arkansas — has introduced legislation intended to clarify issues surrounding mental illness and which people are legally barred from buying or owning a firearm.

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, has introduced a bill that would require near-universal background checks for all gun sales, but said he’s still hunting for a measure that can get 60 votes in the Senate. His bill passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on a straight party-line vote after bipartisan talks on compromise legislation broke down over the issue of record-keeping on gun sales...."

"Conn. lawmakers unveil bipartisan gun control plan"

[link to apnews.myway.com]

"HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - With an announcement of sweeping proposals to curb gun violence, Connecticut lawmakers said they are hoping to send a message to Congress and other state legislators across the country: A bipartisan agreement on gun control is possible.

Legislative leaders on Monday revealed proposals spurred by the Dec. 14 Newtown school shooting following weeks of bipartisan, closed-door negotiations. A vote is expected Wednesday in the General Assembly, where Democrats control both chambers, making passage all but assured.

"Democrats and Republicans were able to come to an agreement on a strong, comprehensive bill," said Senate President Donald E. Williams Jr., a Democrat from Brooklyn, who called the proposed legislation the strongest, most comprehensive bill in the country. "That is a message that should resound in 49 other states and in Washington, D.C. And the message is: We can get it done here and they should get it done in their respective states and nationally in Congress...."

"Democrats propose $10,000 fine for gun owners who don’t have insurance"

[link to dailycaller.com]

"A contingent of liberal Democrats in Congress is proposing a new federal gun control idea: mandatory liability insurance for gun owners.

When New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney introduced the legislation last month with eight other Democrats, she boasted that it is “the first bill to require liability insurance of gun buyers nationwide.”

Maloney’s “Firearm Risk Protection Act” requires gun buyers to have “a qualified liability insurance policy” before they are able to legally purchase a firearm.

It also calls for the federal government to impose a fine as much as $10,000 if a gun owner doesn’t have insurance on a firearm purchased after the bill goes into effect.

“It shall be unlawful for a person who owns a firearm purchased on or after the effective date of this subsection not to be covered by a qualified liability insurance policy,” the bill text reads.

The bill would also make it a federal crime to sell a firearm to anyone without insurance.

“For too long, gun victims and society at large have borne the brunt of the costs of gun violence,” Maloney said as she introduced the legislation. “My bill would change that by shifting some of that cost back onto those who own the weapons.”

Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, told The Daily Caller that the bill is “ridiculous on its face, as it presumes law-abiding gun owners are guilty for merely exercising a fundamental, constitutional right....”

"Free Gun Program Plans To Expand To North Texas"

[link to dfw.cbslocal.com]

"DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Calvin Carter lives in South Dallas’ Sunny Acres neighborhood, an area that has worked hard to keep crime out — but it has been a struggle.

Last July Dallas Police suited up in riot gear and tried to control an angry mob right behind Carter’s home.

Officers were called to the area for what turned out to be a setup between rivalry gangs over drug turf.

It ended with one man being fatally shot by a Dallas officer.

But a new program is getting Carter’s attention.

The Armed Citizen Project is raising money to give free guns to residents living in high-crime areas and to single women — so they can defend themselves against criminals.

Based in Houston– the group now wants to expand to Dallas.

“It sounds good but you have to be careful,” said Carter.

“It’s good to be able to have weapons in case something happens to you or your family when you’re not there, that weapon could save them.”

In order to get a free gun you have to pass a background check and complete a safety training course.

You also have to have lived at your current address for at least a year...."

MORE wishful thinking from the lame stream media...

"MILLER: Second Amendment crumbling as gun-control victories spread"

[link to www.washingtontimes.com]

"The Second Amendment got attacked this week from three sides, leaving gun owners scrambling to find safe ground. While President Obama has lost momentum for federal gun-control laws, he has picked up victories with his allies in blue states and at the United Nations.

After Thursday, Connecticut should consider changing its state nickname from the “Constitution State” to the “Unconstitutional State” after Gov. Dannel Malloy signed an extremely restrictive gun-control law. The bill passed the state House Thursday morning and the Senate on Wednesday.

Before the Newtown tragedy, the Brady Campaign determined that Connecticut was the fifth highest-rated state for restrictive gun-control laws. Adam Lanza ignored those laws — such as including stealing the guns, carrying them without a permit and violating the federal “gun free” school zone — in his evil mission to murder school children and teachers.

Connecticut lawmakers decided that its current “assault weapon” ban, which had a two-characteristic test, was not severe enough, so all semi-automatic rifles with one scary-looking feature are illegal. The bill cites 100 specific makes and models that are banned, such as the AR and AK.

There is a new eligibility certificate required before purchasing or receiving a long gun, which is defined as any firearm that is not a pistol or revolver. These certificates cost $35 and are issued by the Commissioner of Emergency Services and Public Protection, but there is no time limit on how long the application process can take.

Also, buying or even transferring a long gun — such as a father passing down his shotgun to his son — requires a background check and registration. The penalty for violating this provision could be a felony. Connecticut expanded the category of citizens who are permanently prohibited from having a rifle or shotgun to include those who have been convicted of misdemeanors including possession of as little as one-half ounce of marijuana or “unlawful restraint.”

Starting Oct. 1, a gun permit or a new “ammunition certificate” will be required to buy ammunition and magazines. Standard magazines that are considered “large capacity” — which is over 10 rounds — will be illegal. The penalty for a first-time offense of possession of this magazine, purchased before Jan 1., 2014, will be a $90 fine. The penalty will be a class D felon for subsequent offenses or for magazines obtained after that date,

Below the Mason-Dixon line, Maryland may have to change its state nickname from the “Free State” to the “Disarmed State” since only the law-abiding will be affected by its new gun-control law. After months of intense pressure from Gov. Martin O’Malley, the state House passed Wednesday a radical new gun-control law. The Senate is expected to pass it Thursday, and it will then be signed by Mr. O’Malley..."

"4 More Ways Obama's Gun Control Speech Sows Mistrust"

[link to reason.com]

"As I noted earlier today, President Obama professes to be worried about a lack of trust and empathy in the gun control debate, even as he accuses his opponents of blocking life-saving legislation out of sheer partisan perversity. Here are a few other ways in which Obama's speech in Denver sows mistrust:

He conflates a failed background check with stopping a criminal from obtaining a gun.

He falsely equates "assault weapons" with military guns.

He says there is no logical connection between "universal background checks" and gun registration.

He pooh-poohs the idea that there could ever be anything adversarial about the relationship between Americans and their government:

60 Minutes: "Newtown parents and family vow lifelong mission"

[link to www.cbsnews.com]

"Some of the parents and family of the 26 children and adults killed in the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., tell Scott Pelley their mission for gun control will last throughout their lifetimes. Several parents and a husband of one of the victims of Adam Lanza's murder-suicide rampage last December spoke to Pelley in Newtown for a 60 Minutes report to be broadcast Sunday, April 7 at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT.

A portion of the report was broadcast on the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley. The following is the transcript:

Among the families, we spoke with Nicole Hockley who lost 6-year-old Dylan and Bill Sherlach whose wife Mary was the school psychologist.

Scott Pelley: In terms of the things that are being considered in Washington, are any of them at the top of your priority list? If you could have one thing or you could have two, what would you choose?

Bill Sherlach: Personally, I would-- I would think the ma-- limiting magazine size and universal background check. If I had to pick two-

Nicole Hockley: And anything that helps reduce-- gun trafficking as well, in the straw purchases, to know that you can't buy a gun for someone else.

Scott Pelley: Straw purchases are those when a person who has a clean record buys a gun for a person who would not have been able to pass a background check?..."

This will cause the NEA some well-deserved heartburn...

"Hundreds of Texas educators take free concealed handgun class"

[link to www.foxnews.com]

"A concealed handgun training class envisioned by former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle before his death drew hundreds of educators to a Texas school auditorium Saturday.

More than 700 teachers and administrators attended the all-day session on gun laws and safety at Kennedale High School in Dallas-Fort Worth area, The Dallas Morning News reported.

The free class was organized by Dalworthington Gardens Police Chief Bill and Kyle, who was fatally shot at a North Texas shooting range in February.

"It went from 20 to 30 teachers to the more than 700 we have here today. It just exploded with Chris’ involvement," Dalworthington Gardens Police Chief Bill Waybourn told the paper.

Teachers from across the state and at least one representative from each school district in North Texas attended the class, which was organized in response to the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., according to the report.

Participants who complete the required live-ammunition firing training will be eligible for concealed-handgun licenses, the Fort Worth Star Telegram reported...."

"Senate nears gun debate, background checks pivotal"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress returns Monday from a two-week spring recess with gun control and immigration high on the Senate's agenda.

Senators could start debating Democratic-written gun legislation before week's end. But leaders also might decide to give negotiators more time to seek a deal on expanding background checks for firearms buyers.

Passing the expanded background checks would be viewed as a victory for gun control advocates after Democratic leaders made it clear that supporters were nowhere close to getting a majority of votes in favor of reinstituting an assault weapons ban.

Both measures have been a priority for President Barack Obama since the Dec. 14 shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

The National Rifle Association opposes both the assault weapons ban and the expanded background checks

Short of unanimous support in their own party, Democratic senators have been unable to strike a deal with Republicans for the votes they would need to push background check legislation through the chamber. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., might delay debate to give bargainers more time, underscoring how crucial the proposal is to the gun control drive.

"It's the most pivotal piece" of Democrats' gun legislation, said Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence...."

"States look to tax guns, ammo"
Some states and counties are studying whether to tax gun and ammunition purchases. Supporters hope to discourage gun violence or pay for damage it causes

[link to www.usatoday.com]

"CHICAGO — Cook County, Ill., this month began collecting a $25 tax on gun purchases, and at least six states are considering new taxes on firearms or ammunition as a way to help pay for the consequences of gun violence.

The Cook County tax applies to purchases in Chicago's suburbs, but not the city. The tax is expected to raise $600,000 a year, which will help pay for indigent gunshot victims' medical care at county-run Stroger Hospital.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, a Democrat, says 30% of the hospital's trauma patients have gunshot wounds and it costs about $52,000 for initial treatment for each. The tax won't necessarily serve as a deterrent to gun buyers, she says, but "it's an acknowledgment that we as a society pay a terrible price for the proliferation of guns."

A group of gun sellers and owners sued to block the gun tax, saying it violates the Second Amendment right to bear arms. Circuit Court Judge David Atkins denied a temporary restraining order, saying the lawsuit didn't show "that this right is threatened by the tax."

Gun and ammunition purchases are subject to local sales taxes, and manufacturers pay a federal excise tax — 10% for pistols and revolvers, 11% for other guns, shells and cartridges — that funds wildlife programs..."

"Connecticut Gov. Savages Wayne LaPierre: ‘This Guy Is So Out of Whack, It’s Unbelievable’"

"Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy called National Rifle Association chief Wayne LaPierre a "clown" on Sunday. (AP photos)

Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy (D) ripped National Rifle Association chief Wayne LaPierre on Sunday as someone who reminds him of "the clowns at the circus."

Malloy was responding to LaPierre's criticism of Connecticut's new gun restrictions, signed into law after December's elementary school massacre in Newtown. LaPierre said the new rules won't affect criminals but will only make things harder for law-abiding citizens.

"Wayne reminds me of the clowns at the circus. They get the most attention and that's what he's paid to do," he said on CNN's "State of the Union...."

"Conn. gov faults gun lobbyists over restrictions"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy harshly criticized gun industry lobbyists on Sunday, saying they are doing too little to halt gun violence.

Just three days after he signed into law new restrictions on weapons and large-capacity magazines, the governor compared Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, to clowns and said lobbyists want to ensure that the industry can sell guns indiscriminately.

"Wayne reminds me of the clowns at the circus," Malloy said of LaPierre on CNN's "State of the Union." ''They get the most attention and that's what he's paid to do."

Representatives of the NRA did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

"What this is about is the ability of the gun industry to sell as many guns to as many people as possible even if they're deranged, even if they're mentally ill, even if they have a criminal background," Malloy said. "They don't care. They want to sell guns."

Robert Crook, executive director of the Connecticut Coalition of Sportsmen, a lobbying group, said Malloy's criticism was "absolutely false."

"It's another political statement from a governor with little knowledge," he said...."

"Gabrielle Giffords Slams ‘Scare Tactics’ and ‘Misinformation’ in Call for Universal Background Checks"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords smiles as she raises a fist pump to the crowd as she, her husband Mark Kelly, and a number of other Tucson mass shooting victims returned to the site of a shooting that left her critically wounded to urge key senators to support expanded background checks for gun purchases, Wednesday, March 6, 2013, in Tucson, Ariz. (AP)

Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords blasted "misinformation" and "scare tactics" she said are being used to derail universal background checks, and implored lawmakers to act now to pass stricter gun control measures.

In an op-ed published Sunday in the New York Daily News, the former Arizona congresswoman, shot in the head in January 2011, repeated her call for tougher laws for gun buyers.

"[L]ately I'm not feeling too patient toward senators and representatives who are listening to the misinformation that's out there about universal background checks instead of to their constituents, and saying they may not support common sense solutions to ending gun violence," Giffords wrote...."

"Gun Control Fight in Focus for President Obama"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"With the Senate returning from a two-week recess, the Obama administration is gearing up for an all-out push this week to get lawmakers to take action on gun control.

President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Michelle Obama all have events scheduled this week to advocate for the administration's gun proposals, but even though Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., moved a comprehensive gun package to the calendar for the Senate to consider in April, it is not clear whether Republicans will let the measure come to a vote.

Obama is scheduled to push for gun control Monday at the University of Hartford, just 50 miles north of Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 children and six educators were gunned down last year, sparking a national call for reform on gun legislation.

Last week, Obama made a similar appeal in Denver, Colo., just four miles from the site of another mass shooting last year at an Aurora movie theater.

"The only way this time will be different is if the American people demand that this time it must be different; that this time we must do something to protect our communities and our kids," the president said Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Biden is scheduled to host an event with law enforcement officials at the White House, and the first lady plans to travel to Chicago on Wednesday to speak about eliminating violence in communities.

The bill that Reid moved to the Senate calendar does not include the controversial assault weapons ban, but concerns about the universal background check requirement in the plan have placed the bill's future in a holding pattern as some Republicans have voiced concern that it will lead to a national registry of guns...."

Apparently slow learners in the senate...

"Dem, GOP senators work on background check deal"

[link to bigstory.ap.org]

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Two influential senators, one from each party, are working on an agreement that could expand background checks on firearms sales to include gun shows and online transactions, Senate aides said Sunday.

If completed, the effort could represent a major breakthrough in the effort by President Barack Obama and his allies to restrict guns following last December's massacre of schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn.

Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., could nail down an accord early this week, said the aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the private talks. With the Senate returning Monday from a two-week recess, the chamber's debate on gun control legislation could begin as soon as Tuesday, though it might be delayed if the lawmakers need more time to complete a deal, the aides said.

Expanding background checks to gun shows and online sales is one possibility that has been discussed, and the overall package, if completed, could still change, aides said. The senators are also discussing exempting transactions between relatives and temporary transfers for hunters and sportsmen, they said.

Manchin is a moderate who touts an A rating from the National Rifle Association, which has opposed Obama's gun control drive. Toomey has solid conservative credentials and was elected to the Senate two years ago with tea party support from his Democratic-leaning state...."
