Thread: George Soros: 13 New Gun Laws Needed Now

"Sweeping new gun laws proposed by influential liberal think tank"

[link to www.washingtonpost.com]

"With President Obama readying an overhaul of the nation’s gun laws, a liberal think tank with singular influence throughout his administration is pushing for a sweeping agenda of strict new restrictions on and federal oversight of gun and ammunition sales.

The Center for American Progress is recommending 13 new gun policies to the White House — some of them executive actions that would not require the approval of Congress — in what amounts to the progressive community’s wish list.

CAP’s proposals — which include requiring universal background checks, banning military-grade assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, and modernizing data systems to track gun sales and enforce existing laws — are all but certain to face stiff opposition from the National Rifle Association and its many allies in Congress.

Obama — as well as Vice President Biden, who is leading the administration’s gun violence task force — has voiced support for many of these measures. Yet it is unclear which policies he ultimately will propose to Congress. Biden is planning to present his group’s recommendations to Obama on Tuesday.

CAP’s recommendations, presented Friday to White House officials and detailed in an 11-page report obtained by The Washington Post, establish a benchmark for what many in Obama’s liberal base are urging him to do after last month’s massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

“There’s nothing here that interferes with the rights of people to have a gun to protect themselves,” CAP President Neera Tanden said. But, she added, “we have daily episodes where it seems that guns are in the wrong hands, and that’s why we think it’s important that the president acts.”

On Monday, Tanden will moderate a public discussion with three Democrats who have played leading roles in the gun debate: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who during the Clinton administration helped get the 1994 assault-weapons ban passed; Sen. Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.), who helped write that bill as a House member; and Rep. Mike Thompson (Calif.), who chairs the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.

One of CAP’s suggestions to toughen federal regulation of gun sales is to make the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which is currently an agency within the Department of Justice, a unit of the FBI. CAP says absorbing the ATF into the FBI would better empower the ATF to combat gun crime and illegal trafficking."

"HOUSTON -- A couple of strangers came to the rescue when a man was robbed at gunpoint. Now, the victim wants to say thank you to the Good Samaritans.

Police believe the criminal who was canvassing a neighborhood in the 2500 block of Wichita near Hermann Park had no idea what he was in for when he picked his target.

The victim in this case had just walked back to his car from a bar around the corner.

Kevin Dorsey says he hadn’t even closed his car door Thursday night when a man wearing all black and a ski mask put a gun to his chest. The man took Dorsey’s wallet, cell phone and car keys."

"Armed-janitor plan draws mixed reaction from Montpelier parents"

[link to www.toledoblade.com]

"MONTPELIER, Ohio

...Montpelier schools may be the first in Ohio to ramp up security by authorizing employees to carry weapons.

The district has about 1,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade and 75 teachers in one building in this Williams County village of 4,000.

The school board voted unanimously on Wednesday to allow four janitors to carry their own guns inside the school.

Mrs. Hickman, who learned about the plan in a letter the district sent to parents, said that the school district is taking a protective stance that could deter shooters from entering school property and could serve as a model for other districts.

School officials said they began floating the idea of arming some nonteaching staff about six months ago in response to periodic national incidents of classroom violence. The Dec. 14 massacre of 20 students and six staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School provided the impetus for the school board enact the plan.

Four janitors, all men, have volunteered to take part and are to undergo a two-day training course in March that will be paid for by the school district.

Superintendent Jamie Grime would not identify the employees who have agreed to participate.

Mark Earle, father of two Montpelier students, said that arming janitors to deter violence could become a standard practice for schools in Ohio and throughout the country.

“I think some school districts have already implemented armed guards in schools to stop the possibilty of incidents as far as violence with people entering the schools,” Mr. Earle said while he waited in his vehicle for his daughter and son to emerge.".........

"U.S. gun sales hit a record high since Obama's re-election"

" [link to www.mcclatchydc.com]

"To the nation’s gun lobby and gun rights advocates, the Obama administration is public enemy No. 1.

Yet the president has proven to be a boon for gun sales.

In the four years since Barack Obama was first elected president in November 2008, an estimated 67 million firearms have been purchased in the United States. That’s more than were sold in almost seven years before his first election.

Now come concerns that Obama will push through stricter gun laws — although in four years he’s yet to push for them.

With Obama starting a second term in office — and anti-gun fervor stoked by shooting massacres in Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn. — an unprecedented surge in the sales of firearms has taken off.

December 2012 saw a record-shattering number of requests for criminal background checks on prospective gun buyers — more than 116,000 of those from Kansas and Missouri alone.

“Since Obama was re-elected,” said Gary Jessup of UT Arms in Kansas City, Kan., “it’s been off the chart.”

Nationwide, more than 2.7 million of those checks were recorded for December, according to statistics kept by the FBI. Since late 1998 when federal law began mandating such checks for prospective gun buyers, the only other month that exceeded the 2 million mark was November 2012 — when Obama won a second term.

While the FBI said such checks do not represent the actual number of firearms sold, experts say the background check requests do provide the best measure of firearms sales in the United States.

Based on those numbers, 2012 was a record-setting year for gun sales in the country with more than 19 million background checks conducted.

Local gun retailers say the year-end surge has continued right on into 2013. Dealers say the only thing putting a damper on sales is that demand is outstripping the supply.

“Demand went crazy and people bought up everything that was there,” said Becky Bieker, owner of She’s A Pistol gun shop in Shawnee.

Since the background check law took effect in November 1998, more than 160 million checks have been conducted, according to the FBI."

"Ted Nugent: Obama's gun-control plans 'psychotic'"

" [link to www.wnd.com]

"Rock legend and gun-rights activist Ted Nugent took the Obama administration to task Sunday evening for pledging to make gun control a priority, telling a radio host the president’s plans are practically “psychotic.”

“A person who lives by logic and studies history and tries to implement the lessons learned by history cannot begin to rationally explain the conduct of this president or his attorney general or this administration,” Nugent said. “It is psychotic, it is crazy, it is illogical.”

Nugent was speaking to Aaron Klein of New York WABC Radio’s “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio.”

Nugent explained that many people have reacted in fear, backing schemes of gun control or even outright gun bans in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

But disarming American citizens, Nugent claims, is exactly the wrong approach.

“Obama’s dream already exists, and those are called gun-free zones, and that is where the most innocent lives are lost,” Nugent told Klein. “What kind of monster would want more of these? Because if you ask for more gun-free zones, if you further disarm innocent Americans, you are literally engineering slaughters.”

"Schumer Calls On Retailers To Halt Sales Of Assault-Style Rifles"

[link to newyork.cbslocal.com]

Thread: Schumer Calls On Retailers To Halt Sales Of Assault-Style Rifles

"NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – In the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. and the ensuing gun control debate, gun sales have spiked across the country.

On Sunday, Sen. Charles Schumer called on major gun retailers like Wal-Mart to suspend the sale of assault weapons temporarily.

“In Florida alone, there were nearly 5,000 background checks requested on the day of Sandy Hook, as opposed to the day before where there were 3,000,” said Schumer.

A presidential task force on reducing gun violence, being headed by Vice President Joe Biden, is due to issue its recommendations to President Obama on Tuesday.

Among the items expected in the recommendations is a renewal of the federal assault weapons ban. Congress allowed the ban to expire in 2004.

Schumer called on the nation’s largest gun retailers to hold off on selling assault-style rifles until Congress has considered gun control reform legislation.

“When a mainstream store like Wal-Mart says ‘we’re not doing it,’ it’s going to make people think twice,” Schumer said.

New York’s senior senator warned that sales of assault-style weapons could surge later this month when pro-gun advocates hold “Gun Appreciation Day.”

Schumer said according to organizers, the purpose of Gun Appreciation Day is to ramp up gun sales.

“These groups are encouraging individuals from all over the country to go to their local gun stores to purchase assault weapons,” said Schumer.

Wal-Mart is the nation’s biggest gun retailer."

"Gun lobby: Congress doesn't have the muscle to pass gun control"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"Nearly a month after the massacre of 27 people in Newtown, Conn., lawmakers on Capitol Hill are dialing back expectations on what Congress can – or should – do on its own to curb gun violence.

After initial expressions of outrage, lawmakers and the White House are getting down to counting votes on what can actually be achieved on Capitol Hill, where limits on gun rights have has been a taboo for more than a decade.

On Sunday, top gun lobbyists predicted that there’s not enough support in Congress for a new ban on assault weapons and that even curbs on high-capacity magazine clips were in doubt.

“When a president takes all the power of his office, if he’s willing to expend political capital, you don’t want to make predictions,” said David Keene, president of the National Rifle Association, on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“But I would say that the likelihood is that they’re not going to be able to get an assault weapons ban through the Congress,” he added."...

[link to newyork.newsday.com]

"A White Plains residence pinpointed on a controversial handgun permit database was burglarized Saturday, and the burglars' target was the homeowner's gun safe.

At least two burglars broke into a home on Davis Avenue at 9:30 p.m. Saturday but were unsuccessful in an attempt to open the safe, which contained legally owned weapons, according to a law enforcement source. One suspect was taken into custody, the source said.

The gun owner was not home when the burglary occurred, the source said. The victim, who is in his 70s, told Newsday on Sunday that he did not want to comment while the police investigation continues.

"Obama to gun-control foes: Examine your conscience"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"Bringing the curtain down on his first term with a combative press conference, President Barack Obama vowed on Monday to push "vigorously" for measures to curb deadly gun violence and pressed foes of new restrictions in the aftermath of the Newtown tragedy to "examine their own conscience." Obama also admitted he faced stiff opposition from gun-rights advocates in Congress and vowed executive action when possible."...

"But will Congress adopt proposals like renewing the assault weapons ban? “I don’t know,” Obama acknowledged. Lawmakers opposed to such steps must "examine their own conscience." In some cases, Congress won't act but he will, the president said.

“I’m confident that there are some steps that we can take that don’t require legislation and are within my authority as president," he said. "How we are gathering data, for example, on guns that fall into the hands of criminals and how we track that more effectively.”

Asked about the surge in gun and ammunition sales, Obama blamed "a fear that's been fanned" by opponents of gun control.

“We’ve seen—for some time now—that those who oppose any common-sense gun-control or gun-safety measures have a pretty effective way of ginning up fear on the part of gun owners that somehow the federal government’s about to take all your guns away," he said. "There’s probably an economic element to that—it obviously is good for business."

He added that "responsible gun owners—people who have a gun for protection, for hunting, for sportsmanship—they don’t have anything to worry about."

"School districts across country embrace call to hire armed guards"

[link to freebeacon.com]

"School districts in Pennsylvania, Alabama, New Jersey, and Rhode Island have hired armed officers in the weeks since the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., the Free Beacon has found.

Additionally, schools in Florida, Tennessee, Arizona, and New York are in the process of hiring armed officers or recommending they be placed in schools.

Vice President Joe Biden will present his recommendations on school safety to President Barack Obama on Tuesday. Reports indicate that the Obama administration will seek to tighten gun control laws.

“Although school shootings are very rare, they are unpredictable and they always occur in communities where people say it would never happen here,” said Arab City School District superintendent John Mullins. His district in Alabama hired three additional armed school resource officers recently, placing armed officers in each of the district’s four schools.

“When it comes to the safety and well-being of our children, there is no price too high,” he said. The district allocated $66,000 of its $20 million budget for armed officers because they “seem to be a powerful deterrent from being victimized by an irrational violent person.”

The officers hired for the Arab City schools are part of the town’s police department and work on their days off for $15 per hour."

Later this week, Obama will formally announce his proposals to reduce gun violence, which are expected to include renewal of the assault weapons ban, universal background checks and prohibition of high-capacity magazine clips. Thread: Gun Confiscation - Last Refuge of the Tyrant

"Few polarizing subjects are more hotly debated than gun control. Usually lost in the fray of emotional diatribes to ban guns, are the historic empirical foundations of our forefathers who fought a revolution to escape from imperial tyranny. The true reality in today’s AmeriKa is that individual liberty is the most despised activity that any citizen can exert in their lives. Both the popular state worship culture and the authoritarian hoodlums that run the government are so fearful of armed independent citizens, that they are eager to burn the Bill of Rights. Face it, the government is committed to force you to be a ward of the state and will kill you if you resist.
Because of government school propaganda, those indoctrinated during the last several decades are woefully lacking in the knowledge of their own heritage. Phyllis Schlafly writes in, The Founding Fathers On Right To Bear Arms, and reminds of the essence in the Second Amendment.

James Madison: Americans have "the advantage of being armed" -- unlike the citizens of other countries where "the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms."

Patrick Henry: "The great objective is that every man be armed. . . . Everyone who is able may have a gun."

George Mason: "To disarm the people [is] the best and most effectual way to enslave them."

Samuel Adams: "The Constitution shall never be construed . . . to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms."

Alexander Hamilton: "The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed."

Richard Henry Lee: "To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them."

"The chief reason America has remained a free country is the widespread private ownership of firearms. Individual ownership of guns made the American Revolution possible. The principal purpose of the Second Amendment was to maintain our freedom from government. It is an insult to our heritage to imply that the Founding Fathers wrote the Second Amendment just to protect deer hunters."

Today might be the end of this thread...

Tim and his long-time girlfriend finally decided to tie the knot. One evening, after the honeymoon, he was reloading some shells for an upcoming hunt.

His new wife was standing there at the bench.

After a long period of silence she finally spoke. “Honey, I've been thinking… now that we are married I think it's time you quit hunting and fishing. Maybe you should sell your guns and boat.”

Tim got this horrified look on his face.

She said, "Darling, what's wrong?"

”There for a minute you were sounding like my ex-wife.”

"Ex wife!" she screamed, "I didn't know you were married before!"

"I wasn't."

Apparently the propaganda ISN'T working..

"60 percent of young Americans plan to purchase firearms, study reveals"

[link to www.campusreform.org]

"Sixty percent of high school and college students say they plan on owning guns at a later stage in life, an academic study from American University revealed on Monday.

According to a brand new study, sixty percent of young Americans plan to purchase firearms after they have established their households."

According to the study, about 40 percent of the American students surveyed said they definitely planned to own firearms once they had established their own households. Another 20 percent said they were “contemplating” owning guns.

Those findings were part of a broader study conducted by American University professor Jennifer L. Lawless and Loyola Marymount professor Richard L. Fox which focused on the political opinions of young Americans. The study was conducted prior the recent Newtown massacre, but after the Aurora theatre shooting."

"The Vice President's committee was appointed in response to the tragedy at Newtown, but very few of his recommendations have anything to do with what happened there.

"Guns require a finger to pull the trigger. The sad young man who did that in Newtown was clearly haunted by demons and no gun law could have saved the children in Sandy Hook Elementary from his terror."......

[link to newyork.newsday.com]

"Two handguns and two pistol permits were stolen from the New City home of a man whose name and address are listed on the website of a local newspaper as possessing gun permits, police said.

The thieves ransacked the house Wednesday night, breaking into two safes on the home's third floor and stealing a third safe. The guns were in the stolen safe, police said.

Clarkstown police said they had no evidence the burglary was connected to the controversial map."

"Vulnerable Senate Democrats balk at Obama’s gun control measures"

"Some vulnerable Senate Democrats are balking at President Obama’s new push on gun control, reflecting he tough position many will be in if Congress takes up major firearms legislation.

Shortly after Obama unveiled the details of his policy, a number of Democrats from conservative, heavily rural states who are up for reelection in 2014 indicated they’re likely to oppose the measures.

The responses indicate how tough it will be for any legislation to move through Congress — and how tricky an issue it is for some rural-state Democrats facing reelection."
