"NRA President David Keene predicts victory in gun debate after Senate hearing"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"Despite facing a campaign to impose new gun restrictions—one backed by President Barack Obama after a string of deadly mass shootings across the country—the National Rifle Association says it has no intention of backing away from its stalwart defense of gun ownership. Indeed, the organization's leaders think it's a battle they'll win.

NRA President David Keene, who attended the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday for a bill that would impose restrictions on certain guns and ammunition available to private citizens, predicts that little will change by the time the most recent debate settles down.

“Our opponents … hope they can use emotion to achieve an anti-firearms agenda that they haven’t been able to achieve in the past," Keene said during a meeting with reporters hosted by the Christian Science Monitor on Thursday morning. “People are smarter than politicians, and common sense ultimately prevails. … We’ve had that discussion at various decibel levels over the last several decades, and it’s always come out that way and I expect it to happen again.”....

"Background checks could be gun control deal breaker"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"The idea of expanded background checks for prospective gun owners is quickly becoming the battleground in Congress for any changes in national weapons control legislation.

March On Washington Source: WikicommonsIn nearly a dozen national polls from varying organizations, an overwhelming large number of people seem in favor of more background checks on gun owners.

A Quinnipiac poll covering three states, Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, showed that more than 90 percent of those polled favored expanding background checks to people who buy weapons at gun shows.

Last week, Constitution Daily looked at polling questions on guns from nine different sources, including Fox News, NBC, ABC, Pew Research, and Gallup.

On average, 89 percent of those people polled wanted expanded background checks. The background check issue, along with a desire to devote more resources to mental health issues, were the two ideas that had overwhelmingly large support in the polls."

Just gotta love those "convenient" polling organizations...

'Bullet to the Head' star Sylvester Stallone says he wants additional gun control

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Sylvester Stallone says that despite his "Rambo" image and new shoot-em-up film "Bullet to the Head," he's in favour of new national gun control legislation.

Stallone supported the 1994 "Brady bill" that included a now-expired ban on assault weapons, and hopes that ban can be reinstated.

"I know people get (upset) and go, 'They're going to take away the assault weapon.' Who ... needs an assault weapon? Like really, unless you're carrying out an assault. ... You can't hunt with it. ... Who's going to attack your house, a (expletive) army?"

Amid gun control debate, does 'skeet-gate' matter?

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"Obama's comment about going skeet shooting 'all the time' at Camp David raised eyebrows and sent many reporters on a hunt for evidence. Does the president's personal experience with guns matter to the gun control debate?"

"As Washington engages in a fierce debate over gun control, does it matter whether President Obama has personally ever shot a gun? Would it change things to learn that he'd fired a weapon a total of five times in his life? Or 50? Or 500?

We ask this, of course, because of the ongoing minicontroversy over Mr. Obama's statement in a recent interview with The New Republic that "we do skeet shooting all the time" at Camp David.

It may have seemed at the time like a casual, offhand remark – Obama certainly didn't claim he's a hunter or a real gun enthusiast (though he made clear he has great respect for those who are). But it was immediately challenged by many who smelled, if not an outright falsehood, then a likely exaggeration.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R) of Tennessee challenged the president to a skeet-shooting contest. Reporters pressed White House Press Secretary Jay Carney for details of the president's adventures in skeet shooting – or better yet, a photograph of Obama engaged in said activity – to no avail. The New Republic briefly posted what it believed was an official photo of Obama wielding a gun at Camp David, but that turned out to be an Internet hoax."...

"Chicago takes leading role in national gun debate"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"CHICAGO (AP) — They are counting the dead from gunfire again in Chicago, a city awash in weapons despite having one of the strictest gun-control ordinances in the nation.

After a year in which Chicago's death toll surpassed 500, the bloodshed has continued in 2013 at a rate of more than one killing a day. It was the city's deadliest January in more than a decade.

Now with this week's death of a 15-year-old drum majorette who had just returned from performing at President Barack Obama's inauguration, the mounting losses have put Obama's hometown at the center of the intensifying national debate over guns.

The slayings are no longer dismissed as an only-in-Chicago story about violent street gangs. They are almost a Sandy Hook Elementary School attack unfolding in slow motion: an honor student gunned down at a high school basketball game, two men in their 40s killed outside a hamburger stand, a woman whose bullet-riddled body was found early Friday in a van on the world-famous Lake Shore Drive.

Both gun-rights and gun-control advocates are seizing on the city's woes — one side to push for greater access to guns for self-defense, the other to seek greater restrictions on gun sales.

"You've got these two philosophies that are butting heads, and they're butting heads in the biggest city in the middle of the United States," said David Workman, of the Bellevue, Wa.-based Second Amendment Foundation. "And both sides are holding up Chicago as a punching bag."...

"ATLANTA (AP) — A student opened fire at his middle school Thursday afternoon, wounding a 14-year-old in the neck before an armed officer working at the school was able to get the gun away, police said.

Multiple shots were fired in the courtyard of Price Middle School just south of downtown about 1:50 p.m. and the one boy was hit, Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said. In the aftermath, a teacher received minor cuts, he said.

The wounded boy was taken “alert, conscious and breathing” to Grady Memorial Hospital, said police spokesman Carlos Campos. Grady Heath System Spokeswoman Denise Simpson said the teen had been discharged from the hospital Thursday night. Campos said charges against the shooter were pending...."

"NRA Winning the Influence Battle Over Gun Control"

[link to www.forbes.com]

"The gun control debate is clearly one of the most contentious and controversial issues in America today. And the battle over gun control is now being waged through intensive media campaigns from both sides of the political spectrum to influence public opinion and to assert pressure on policy makers. So who’s winning? To find out, we turned to objective data provided exclusively to Forbes Insights by Appinions, the influence marketing platform. Keep in mind Forbes Insights has no agenda other than to shed research light on the process of measuring influence and what we can learn from it. The facts are objective, whatever your perspective on the issue may be. We certainly don’t aim to promote either side and are just stating the facts of influence and who is leading or gaining ground through the lens of influence.

Forbes Insights and Appinions looked at the data for the week prior to the Sandy Hook tragedy and trended the data over the subsequent 5 weeks to determine the ebb and flow over the gun control debate. We found that the NRA and the pro-gun rights voices are winning the influence battle and will continue to be strong and more influential if the pro gun control voice remains fragmented. On the flip side, the pro gun control voice could certainly gain influence if they establish a more united voice. Here are some other interesting observations from the data:..."

"Obama mocked for releasing skeet shoot photo during gun-control debate"

[link to www.nypost.com]

"He’s full of skeet!

Gun owners lampooned President Obama as Elmer Fudd yesterday after the White House released a photo — in the middle of a fierce national firearms debate — of the commander-in-chief shooting clay targets at Camp David over the summer.

While the president’s shooting skills were being mocked, his own gun-control allies privately fretted that Obama risked being ridiculed as a phony for suddenly trying to portray himself as a friend of sportsmen and hunters. Or, conversely, that he was glorifying the use of guns.

The photo was taken last Aug. 4, on Obama’s 51st birthday.

The left-handed president, wearing goggles and ear protection, peers down the barrel of a shotgun while his left index finger pulls the trigger.

Bam! A spray of smoke shoots out of the rifle.

The White House released the photo to back up Obama’s recent statements that he shot skeet at Camp David, a claim that gun-rights advocates said they doubted.

Obama aides even coined a term for the skeptics — calling them “skeeters.”

“For all the skeeters, POTUS [president of the United States] shoots clay targets on the range at Camp David on Aug. 4, 2012,” White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said in releasing the photo.

Obama political adviser David Plouffe tweeted, “Attn Skeet Birthers. Make Our Day — Let the Photoshop conspiracies begin.”

But if the move was aimed to win over gun enthusiasts, it backfired.

“That looks pretty pathetic. That’s not skeet shooting,” chuckled Rick Davenport, of the Erie County Sportsmen’s Federation.

In the photo, Obama is shooting straight ahead.

“In skeet shooting, you’re either shooting high or you’re shooting low! This is nothing but pandering to the sportsmen and hunters,” Davenport said.

New York Rifle and Pistol Association President Tom King said Obama’s 12-gauge Browning Citori shotgun must have jammed because gun owners will see right through the p.r. offensive.

“We’ve seen this p.r. stunt before. This is what all the gun banners try to do. They try to ingratiate themselves with us,” King said.

“You really think this photo is going to make us think Obama is a pro-gun friend of the Second Amendment?” King said, laughing. “Go figure.”

Rick McDermott, an upstate gun-rights activist, said Obama is shooting blanks.

“This is all political posturing. It’s a PR stunt to show that Obama feels our pain. The Second Amendment has nothing to do with skeet shooting....”

"The gun control group founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will air a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl featuring a child narrator and aimed at the NRA's flip-flop on background checks.

Because of the high-profile spot the Super Bowl affords it, the ad is perhaps the most significant gun-control push from Bloomberg's group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

The ad will air in the Washington, D.C., area during the game tonight between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens. Erika Soto Lamb, a spokeswoman for the group, said in an email that the ad cost six figures."

"A Summary of the U.S. Senate's Draconian Gun Control Proposals"

[link to www.blacklistednews.com]

"It is no secret that the second amendment is currently under attack by a number of authoritarians in Washington DC. Several bills have been introduced in Congress that if passed into law would either dismantle or regulate away the ability of law abiding citizens to conduct transactions involving firearms, ammunition and assorted gun related accessories. These people want you to believe that gun related violence will disappear only if they are able to pass a few gun control laws. If this were true than Mexico which has some of the most restrictive gun laws on the planet would be one of the safest countries in the world. In reality, these restrictive gun laws have empowered Mexican drug cartels to commit countless murders because the average person is unable to defend themselves from people who operate outside of the law. We see the same trend in the United States where gun violence is a much larger problem in areas where there are gun restrictions. Chicago and Washington DC are two good examples of this. When the Supreme Court struck down certain gun control provisions that were imposed in these cities, the murder and gun crime rates actually dropped. Schools which are essentially advertised by the media as gun free zones have now become ripe targets for criminally insane individuals because they know there won’t be anyone who will fight back. Anyone who believes that gun control laws will reduce gun violence either has no basic common sense or has an agenda to disarm the people so they can be more easily controlled and potentially enslaved.

Many new gun control bills have already been introduced in the 113th Congress. In this article we are going to focus specifically on the gun control measures that have been introduced in the U.S. Senate. Here is a quick synopsis of each one of those bills."

[link to www.wxyz.com]

"(WXYZ) - Police sources tell 7 Action News that a women's basketball coach from Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School shot two men who attacked him as he was walking two basketball players to their cars in the school parking lot.

Police sources say the coach was walking the two girls to their cars when two men allegedly approached and one pulled out a gun and grabbed him by his chain necklace. The coach then pulled out his gun and shot both of them, according to sources.

The man who shot the attackers was 70 years old, according to police.

One of the attackers was found dead in the median on Lafayette Boulevard, and the other was taken to a local hospital, according to police sources. We've learned that both of the men had attended the high school, and one had been recently expelled.

Police sources say the coach has a Concealed Pistol License and is reportedly a reserve police officer. They say he is fully cooperating with authorities."

"Obama presses Congress during Minnesota speech to pass gun measures"

[link to news.yahoo.com] is a crimepolitics.html

"President Barack Obama during a speech with law enforcement officers in Minneapolis, Minn. Monday placed public pressure on Congress to pass gun control measures as part of ongoing effort to respond to December's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"Real and lasting change requires Congress to do its part and do it soon," Obama said from a podium at the Minneapolis Police Department Special Operations Center with a riser full of law enforcement officers visible behind him.

A politically competitive state, Minnesota is home to many gun-rights advocates. But gun control discussions have increased there since a Sept. 27 mass shooting at Accent Signage Systems in Minneapolis, which resulted in six dead as well as successful local efforts to stem gun violence involving young people.

Obama said Monday that local youth initiatives in Minneapolis have reduced by 40 percent the number of young people injured by guns.

The president said his discussion with local law enforcement officers and victims and their families from varied backgrounds earlier in the day showed a clear consensus.

"They all believe it's time to take some very basic commonsense steps to prevent gun violence," Obama said.

Obama called on the public to urge their representatives in Congress to act on gun measures, identifying criminal background checks as one of the most widely supported gun measures. There's "no reason why we can’t get that done," Obama said, calling the initiative a "smart idea."

There were 13.7 million hunters in the United States over age 16 -- 12.7 million of whom used rifles, shotguns or handguns for hunting, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

That means hunters constituted only 15.9 to 18.1 percent of the estimated 70-80 million gun owners in the U.S. in 2011 -- the latest year for which statistics are available.

In a Dec. 28 national report, USF&W said 13.7 million individuals over age 16 self-identified as hunters, and that 12.7 million used guns (shotguns, rifles or handguns) while hunting.

Another 2.9 million hunters used antique muzzleloaders to hunt, but according to USF&W, there is overlap between this figure and other figures due to self-reporting.

Around 4.5 million hunted with bows and arrows...."

"Debate Over Gun Control Is One-Sided in Idaho"

[link to www.nytimes.com]

"BOISE, Idaho — Somewhere in America, supposedly, there is a debate about regulating guns. But it is hard to find here.

In Idaho’s graceful, striated-marble Capitol, home to one of the more ardent and adamant state legislatures in the nation in standing up for the Second Amendment, lawmakers from both parties say that a torrent of public passion, even panic, about new proposed federal gun rules is pushing in only one direction: toward more guns, not fewer.

If Idahoans, like Americans in many states, have rushed to buy guns out of fear for personal safety in the aftermath of recent mass shootings, or out of fear of tighter legal controls, then democracy has already spoken, many lawmakers said. People have voted with their pocketbooks.

“Enable them to do what they believe is right,” said State Senator Marv Hagedorn, a Republican who was designated to be his chamber’s point man on proposed gun legislation in the session that began in January, describing what he sees as his mandate. “There’s a huge call to all of us to protect the Second Amendment rights.”

Every level of government in every state is, without question, looking more closely at issues of public safety since the slaughter in Newtown, Conn., of 20 children and 6 adults in an elementary school in December. But in deeply conservative states like Idaho, where President Obama got less than 33 percent of the vote in November — one of his worst showings in the nation — the discussion of school safety is occurring behind a kind of Chinese wall, separate from the question of whether certain types of guns or high-capacity magazines are to blame...."

"January's FBI gun background checks are second-highest ever"

[link to www.cnn.com]

"FBI figures posted Tuesday show there were 2,495,400 background checks done through the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, known as NICS. The number was more than 1 million higher than any previous January.

Also in January, 8,980 of the background checks resulted in gun purchase denials.

U.S. law requires background checks for all people who try to buy firearms from federally licensed dealers.

The data does not indicate exactly how many weapons might have been purchased, as some customers buy more than one gun at a time.

December was the top record-setting month, with 2,783,765 background checks...."

CO:"Dems Unveil Gun Control Bills"

[link to thecoloradoobserver.com]

"DENVER–Democratic legislators rolled out a sweeping package of gun-control measures Tuesday, setting the stage for a blistering confrontation with gun-rights advocates who said the proposals would make Colorado the most anti-gun state in the nation.

The proposed package of eight bills would ban ammunition magazines holding more than 10 rounds; create strict liability for manufacturers, distributors and owners of so-called assault weapons; require background checks for all buyers, and eliminate state subsidies for background checks.

The package also bans concealed-carry in most areas on college campuses and requires in-person training for concealed-carry permits.

Mental-health professionals would be able to stop a potentially dangerous patient from purchasing guns by notifying the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

“Coloradans have asked us to lead on this issue–not to stand idly by while children are being gunned down in schools and movie theaters,” said Senate President John Morse. “In response, we have created unique Colorado solutions to our unique Colorado problems.”

Morse and other Democratic sponsors unveiled the measures at a capitol press conference before a backdrop of victims’ relatives from mass shootings at Columbine High School, the Aurora theater and Sandy Hook Elementary School.

“As a civilized society, we cannot stand back and wait for another Columbine, another Aurora,” said House Speaker Mark Ferrandino. “The legislation we introduce will not bring all gun violence in Colorado to a screeching halt, but it will reduce gun violence....”

The "Good News" is that "IF" they continue to pursue this course of action, it will highly likely cause them to lose BOTH chambers in the next election...

"Bruce Willis: Don't infringe on Second Amendment"

[link to wtop.com]

RYAN PEARSON- AP Entertainment Writer

"LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Bruce Willis says he's against new gun control laws that could infringe on Second Amendment rights. The "Die Hard" star also dismisses any link between Hollywood shootouts and real-life gun violence.

"I think that you can't start to pick apart anything out of the Bill of Rights without thinking that it's all going to become undone," Willis told The Associated Press in a recent interview while promoting his latest film, "A Good Day To Die Hard." ''If you take one out or change one law, then why wouldn't they take all your rights away from you?....."

"Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley presses lawmakers for handgun licenses for residents"
[link to www.washingtontimes.com]

"Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley will urge state lawmakers on Wednesday to pass legislation requiring residents to obtain a license before purchasing a handgun, but Second Amendment advocates hope to drown out his message.

Mr. O'Malley, a Democrat, will testify before the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee in favor of his bill, which would also ban assault weapons, limit magazine capacities to 10 rounds and require prospective gun buyers to complete a safety course and pay a $100 application fee.

However, gun-rights advocates will descend upon Annapolis to rally against a bill that they say tramples on gun owners’ rights and won’t stop criminals who carry illegal guns.

“The overriding problem with the governor’s bill is that it does little to address the bad guys with the guns,” said Delegate Michael D. Smigiel Sr., Cecil Republican, who said rally organizers are expecting 1,000 to 3,000 people. “It deals with ways of curtailing law-abiding citizens from being able to exercise their full Second Amendment rights.”

Mr. O'Malley proposed his legislation last month in an effort to fight gun violence and prevent incidents similar to last year’s deadly shootings in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo.

While requiring a permit to carry a handgun in public is the norm throughout most of the U.S., only nine states currently require a license or permit to purchase a handgun, according to Johns Hopkins University's Center for Gun Policy and Research...."

"Gun backers draw bead on O’Malley plan"

[link to www.washingtontimes.com]

"Second Amendment advocates flocked to Annapolis on Wednesday to rally and testify against a gun control proposal by Gov. Martin O'Malley, mounting a massive protest whose scale surprised some observers in the heavily Democratic state.

Mr. O'Malley, a Democrat, was among the first of more than 400 people scheduled to testify before the state’s Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee on the bill, which would ban assault weapons and require residents to obtain a license before purchasing handguns.

Before the hearing, more than 1,000 gun rights advocates gathered outside the State House to voice their disapproval, echoing scenes that have played out in other state capitals, where the push for gun control by Democratic leaders in the wake of last year’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn., is getting blowback from Republicans as well as many conservative and rural Democrats.

“It just seems to be rather punitive to the law-abiding citizens of this state like myself,” Tom Morris Jr., a Maryland resident and former correspondent for the TV series “America's Most Wanted,” said during Wednesday’s hearing. “We can limit the capacity of magazines, but that’s not going to stop a criminal from putting in as many bullets as he can get.”

Wednesday’s rally was the latest to feature Second Amendment supporters gathering to discourage Democrats from tightening gun laws and to urge Republicans to resist such efforts after calls from President Obama and many other Democrats for national and local gun control reforms...."

"Arkansas Senate passes bill to make gun-permit records private"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (Reuters) - The Republican-controlled Arkansas state Senate approved a bill on Wednesday that would exempt from public disclosure the names and zip codes of gun owners, those with permits to carry concealed guns and permit applicants.

The bill comes in response to the controversy late last year over a New York newspaper's decision to publish the names and addresses of thousands of gun permit holders on its website after a shooting rampage at a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school that killed 20 children and six adults.

The Journal News, which serves suburbs just north of New York City in Westchester and Rockland counties, pulled the information from its site last month.

The Arkansas bill, which passed the Senate 24-9, now moves to the state House of Representatives, which is also controlled by Republicans. Governor Mike Beebe, a Democrat, has said he opposes the bill because it restricts the state's Freedom of Information Act.

Republican state Senator Bruce Holland, the bill's sponsor, said he introduced the legislation after a constituent contacted him with concerns about the Journal News' actions...."

"86-year-old woman grabs gun in self-defense"

[link to www.wcyb.com]

"BULLS GAP, Tenn." -

"An 86-year-old woman grabbed a gun in self-defense when police say an intruder broke into her home. News 5 sat down with this woman today and listened to her tell about the experience.

Louise Howard lives just off a busy highway in Bulls Gap.

She told us she's been the victim of theft many times before, and she's had enough and it was time to take a stand.

"I told different people if I ever catch them, I mean to kill them," said Louise Howard.

Louise Howard may be 86 years old, but she isn't afraid to defend her home or her life.

On Friday afternoon she was forced to do that. Howard said a young woman broke the glass on her door and forced her way inside.

"I was in shock. I didn't know what she was going to do to me!" Howard said.

Howard immediately grabbed her gun, but the two started to struggle down the hall.

"I already had my gun in my hand, and I wouldn't turn it loose for anything," she explained.

Howard's hands are proof she wasn't letting go.

"She stuck a fingernail in there," said Howard. "She moved her hands sort of released me a bit. I moved over like that, and I was going to shoot her in the stomach, but she took her knee and hit my elbow."

The bullet ended up inside the wall where it still hides.

Sheriff Ronnie Lawson told us Howard was in her rights to use her gun for protection..."

Is this turning into a "competition" now???

"Calif. seeks to adopt nation's toughest gun laws"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Weeks after New York enacted the nation's toughest gun laws, California lawmakers said Thursday they want their state to do even more in response to recent mass shootings, particularly the Connecticut school massacre.

Democrats who control the state Legislature revealed 10 proposals that they said would make California the most restrictive state for possessing firearms.

They were joined at a Capitol news conference by San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, along with several police chiefs.

"California has always been a leader on the issue of gun safety," Villaraigosa said. "New York has stepped up and stepped forward. California needs to answer the call."

Among the measures is one that would outlaw the future sale of semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines. The restriction would prevent quick reloading by requiring bullets to be loaded one at a time.

Lawmakers also want to make some prohibitions apply to current gun owners, not just to people who buy weapons in the future.

Like New York, California also would require background checks for buying ammunition and would add to the list of prohibited weapons.

Those buying ammunition would have to pay a fee and undergo an initial background check by the state Department of Justice, similar to what is required now before buyers can purchase a weapon. Subsequent background checks would be done instantly by an ammunition seller checking the Justice Department's records..."

"Senators seek deal on gun-sale background checks"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"WASHINGTON (AP) — A bipartisan quartet of senators, including two National Rifle Association members and two with "F'' ratings from the potent firearms lobby, are quietly trying to find a compromise on expanding the requirement for gun-sale background checks.

A deal, given a good chance by several participants and lobbyists, could add formidable political momentum to one of the key elements of President Barack Obama's gun control plan. Currently, background checks are required only for sales by the nation's 55,000 federally licensed gun dealers, but not for gun show, person-to-person sales or other private transactions.

The senators' talks have included discussions about ways to encourage states to make more mental health records available to the national system and the types of transactions that might be exempted from background checks, such as sales among relatives or to those who have permits to carry concealed weapons, said people who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to describe the negotiations publicly.

The private discussions involve liberal Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, who is the No. 3 Senate Democratic leader; West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, an NRA member and one of the chamber's more moderate Democrats; Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., another NRA member and one of the more conservative lawmakers in Congress; and moderate GOP Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois.

"It will not limit your ability to borrow your Uncle Willie's hunting rifle or share a gun with your friend at a shooting range," Schumer said last week in one of the senators' few public remarks about the package the group is seeking. He said he believed a bipartisan deal could be reached.

Polls show that requiring background checks for nearly all gun purchases has more public support than Obama's proposals to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, and it is among those given the best chance of enactment. Even so, it is opposed by the NRA and many congressional Republicans, who consider it intrusive and unworkable for a system they say already has flaws.

"My problem with background checks is you're never going to get criminals to go through background checks," Wayne LaPierre, NRA executive vice president, told the Senate Judiciary Committee at its gun control hearing last week.

An agreement among the four senators could help overcome that opposition by opening the door to support from other conservative Republicans besides Coburn. It also could make it easier to win backing from Democratic senators from GOP-leaning states, many of whom face re-election next year and who have been leery of embracing Obama's proposals.

Schumer and Kirk each have "F'' scores from the NRA, while Coburn and Manchin have "A'' ratings...."
