"New York City sees surge in gun violence"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"When a gunman opened fire Sunday night on Kelly Street in the Bronx, 15-year-old Sarah Rivera put herself in harm’s way to save a toddler who had been left in a stroller on the street. While several adults ran from the scene, River dashed for the child. She was hit in the leg by a stray bullet while pushing the child to safety.

“I thought I was going to die,” Sarah told the New York Daily News. “I fell to the ground."

Doctors expect Sarah to make a full recovery, but the circumstances of the shooting are disturbingly familiar. Over the weekend, New York City witnessed 25 shootings, resulting in six fatalities. On Sunday alone, three people were killed and eight others wounded by gunfire from Brooklyn to the Bronx.

The rash of weekend shootings comes against a backdrop of major gun control efforts by both New York City and state officials. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has emerged as one of the nation’s strongest advocates for stricter firearm regulations, and has long touted the city’s strict gun control rules as helping to bring about a significant drop in crime over the last decade. (The mayor’s office declined to comment on the weekend’s shootings.)

New York recently became the first state to pass major gun control legislation since the Dec. 14 shootings in Newtown, Conn. The bill that Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law in January both strengthens the state’s existing assault weapons ban and introduces new mental health regulations for potential gun owners...."

A classic example of knee-jerk legislation being rushed through...

"Conn. lawmakers revise gun control legislation"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut lawmakers who passed strict new gun control measures in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre approved a package of revisions Monday to reduce confusion about the new rules and expand the list of officials who can legally possess restricted firearms.

Both chambers of the state legislature voted to adopt changes and exemptions to the bipartisan deal that strengthened the state's assault weapons ban and banned the sale of high-capacity magazines.

The legislation emerged from a bipartisan working group that sought to refine the original gun control bill, which proponents hailed as one of the most far-reaching in the nation, in response to ambiguity that came to light in part through feedback from constituents and gun owners. A spokesman for Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said he supports the changes.

The new bill allows individuals to possess and register assault weapons they purchased or placed on consignment prior to or on April 4, the day the gun control law was passed, but did not receive until after that date.

The bill also clarifies the status of .22-caliber rimfire rifles, defining them as assault weapons when fitted with a detachable magazine and more than one of several features including a folding or telescoping stock, bayonet mount or flash suppressor. With passage of Monday's revisions, the firearm so constructed will no longer be available for sale in Connecticut, but consumers who purchased it since April 4 will be allowed to register and keep it...."

Where to begin with this propaganda???

"This Is How the NRA Ends A bigger, richer, meaner gun-control movement has arrived"

[link to www.newrepublic.com]

"On April 17, the bill to expand background checks on gun buyers failed in the Senate, and the fatalistic shrugs in Washington were so numerous they were nearly audible. The legislation had been a modest bipartisan compromise, supported by 90 percent of the public and lobbied for hard by the president. A group backed by Michael Bloomberg had spent $12 million on ads pressuring senators to vote “yes.” When the bill fell short—by just five votes—it seemed to confirm a Beltway article of faith: There’s no point messing with the National Rifle Association (NRA). And that, many assumed, was the last we’d be hearing about gun reform.

But then something unexpected happened. Some of the senators who’d voted “no” faced furious voters back home. Even before Erica Lafferty, the daughter of murdered Sandy Hook Elementary principal Dawn Hochsprung, confronted New Hampshire Republican Kelly Ayotte at a particularly tense town hall, Ayotte’s disapproval rating in the state had jumped from 35 to 46 percent—half the respondents said her “no” vote made them less likely to support her.1 In Pennsylvania, which has the second-highest concentration of NRA members in the country, the bill’s Republican co-sponsor, Pat Toomey, saw his approval reach a record high. One of the country’s best-known gun-rights advocates, Robert Levy, said the NRA’s “stonewalling of the background-check proposal was a mistake, both politically and substantively.”2

In the Senate, the backlash had an effect. Some Republicans who had opposed the bill, such as Johnny Isakson of Georgia and Jeff Flake of Arizona, signaled they might be open to changing their minds. Majority Leader Harry Reid, once a dependable NRA ally, spoke about taking the rare step of bringing the bill back for another vote. Senator Joe Manchin, the bill’s Democratic co-sponsor, is still actively courting support from his colleagues. “It’s not going away,” he told me.

Why did these developments take so many elected officials and pundits by surprise? As New York Times columnist Tom Edsall has pointed out, political science research shows that politicians consistently overestimate the conservatism of their constituents. But in this case, there was something more debilitating at work. The political class often lets old assumptions blind it to shifting realities.3 And the absolute power of the NRA is one of the oldest and least-tested assumptions in Washington...."

Not sure this is such a good idea, agree with NOT using tax money to lobby, but am concerned about the precedence...

"New NRA-backed Kansas law seeks to limit lobbying"
- NRA-backed Kansas law bans government lobbying on gun issues; critics say it stifles debate

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Fresh off a series of legislative victories across the country, the National Rifle Association has launched a new effort starting in gun-friendly Kansas seeking to clamp down on the use of government money to lobby on gun-control issues.

While it's not clear how the law would be enforced considering it includes no penalties for violators, critics argue the measure threatens to stifle debate and give the state government far more control over a local government's message.

For instance, would university presidents — now confronted with a new Kansas law to allow concealed-carry weapons on campuses — be able to travel on university time and salary to argue against the rule? Or, could a government agency even print a pamphlet about gun safety without running afoul of the law?

"It does raise these questions about one side or the other becoming so dominant that it can close off opposing views," said Gene Policinski, senior vice president for the nonpartisan First Amendment Center, based at Vanderbilt University.

The Kansas law that takes effect next month also prohibits the use of state dollars for "publicity or propaganda," distributing materials or advertising. Although it imposes the same restrictions on both sides of the debate, gun-rights advocates pressed so much for it in the recently concluded legislative session that it was known inside the Statehouse as "the NRA bill."

For the NRA and other gun-rights advocates, the lobbying law is a good-government measure that prevents precious state dollars from being put to political use and another symbol of Kansas' commitment to gun-ownership rights.

"People are going to look to Kansas," said Brent Gardner, an NRA liaison who lobbies in four states, including Kansas. "People are starting to see a number of states becoming leaders in firearms rights."...

"You Could Encourage the Nevada Governor to Veto Gun Control!"

[link to www.gunowners.org]

"-- Gov. Sandoval is sticking his finger in the wind, trying to decide whether to issue veto

You don’t even have to live in Nevada.

But you should know that Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval (R) is trying to decide whether he should sign or veto SB 221, a bill so extreme that the left-of-center United States Senate even voted down a version of it.

If he signs this Universal Background Check bill, it will have ramifications for you -- even if you don’t live in the Silver State.

So please call 775-684-5670 and press “2” -- to vote AGAINST the universal background check bill (SB 221). You don’t have to live in the state. You don’t even have to give your name or address -- the entire process is automated and it will take you less than 13 seconds.

There are many reasons why ALL gun owners from around the country should call.

For starters, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is generating his own calls into the Governor’s hotline, encouraging Sandoval to sign the background (registration) bill.

Mayor “Big Gulp” has posted a video where he encourages people from around the country to cast their votes.

But YOUR VOTE could make the difference!

You may not even live in Nevada. And so you may be thinking, “Why should I take action on an out-of-state bill?”

The reason is that what happens in Nevada won’t stay in Nevada!

U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) has been on the fence in regard to universal background checks. He voted right on a key vote back in April, but we had to put a LOT of pressure on him in the state to get him to do so.

Every vote count that the Left made public had Sen. Heller as a possible pick up for their side. And that’s why we need to keep Nevada from adopting a universal background check bill. If the Republican Governor signs this bill, it becomes much more likely that this U.S. Senator from Nevada will vote to strap the rest of the country with gun control.

So please call the Governor’s hotline number -- no matter where you live!..."

"Ill. prosecutor criticized over concealed carry"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"ST. LOUIS (AP) — A state's attorney who has decided to stop prosecuting Illinois' last-in-the-nation ban on having guns in public said Friday a federal court's scrapping of the prohibition empowers him to let citizens go ahead and carry concealed weapons.

Madison County's top prosecutor, Tom Gibbons, announced the move Thursday and has since drawn criticism from several colleagues who question whether he's wrongly acting like a maker of laws instead of someone whose job is to enforce them.

A concealed-carry measure awaits action from Gov. Pat Quinn, but Gibbons said he's grown tired of the months-long bid to get permissive legislation on the books.

"As this process dragged on in Springfield, with all sides working very hard on it, we had to do something," he told The Associated Press on Friday from his office, northeast of St. Louis.

The Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals late last year threw out the state's prohibition, giving Illinois lawmakers a deadline to come up with a measure allowing concealed carry. The state's General Assembly signed off on a bill that's now before Quinn, who hasn't indicated how he'll decide it by a newly extended July 9 cutoff.

Gibbons said "it serves no purpose" to deny residents in his southern Illinois county from carrying weapons after the appellate court nullified the ban. Concealed carry is being allowed in the county only for those gun owners who meet certain requirements, he said.

Legal experts have said prosecutors are well within their rights to decide which cases they will or won't pursue. But several of Gibbons' colleagues across Illinois believe he's jumping the gun as Quinn still weighs the bill.

"We are a nation of laws, and we should follow the law and not pick and choose which ones we're going to follow," said Chuck Garnati, who's in his eighth four-year term as the top prosecutor in southern Illinois' Williamson County. "I commend the Legislature for passing the conceal law and sending it to Gov. Quinn. But until he signs it, it's not the law in Illinois. That's the bottom line."

Bob Berlin, the state's attorney in the Chicago area's DuPage County, said his job is "to uphold and enforce" and that's what he's sticking to as well.

"I'm not going to criticize what Tom Gibbons is doing, but my approach right now is: The law is that you can't carry guns," Berlin said. "Until we have a new law, it's not for me to decide what the law is."

While the 7th Circuit's nullifying Illinois' ban may have spurred confusion, "that does not by any authority I'm familiar with allow state's attorneys to interpret the law or fashion their own version when we don't know what the law will be," said Jon Barnard, top prosecutor in Adams County in western Illinois...."

"Free gun initiative begins in Houston neighborhood"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"HOUSTON (AP) — Houston resident Cheryl Strain's inexperience with guns was apparent as she struggled to load shells into a 20-gauge shotgun.

Over the piercing blasts of gunfire in the shooting range, Strain's instructor, Dan Blackford, patiently directed her on how to use her thumb to shove a shell all the way inside the barrel and feel it click.

"Now we got a round in the chamber ready to go," Blackford said as he positioned her body on the right way to hold the shotgun. "Look down your sight, put that BB right in the middle of your target and press the trigger."

Strain's northwest Houston community of Oak Forest is the first neighborhood in the country being trained and equipped by the Armed Citizen Project, a Houston nonprofit that is giving away free shotguns to single women and residents of neighborhoods with high crime rates.

While many cities have tried gun buy-backs and other tactics in the ongoing national debate on gun control, the nonprofit and its supporters say gun giveaways to responsible owners are actually a better way to deter crime. The organization, which plans to offer training classes in Dallas, San Antonio, and Tucson, Ariz., in the next few weeks, is working to expand its giveaways to 15 cities by the end of the year, including Chicago and New York.

But others in Houston, while expressing support for Second Amendment rights, question whether more guns will result in more gun-related deaths rather than less crime.

Residents of Oak Forest say their neighborhood, made up of older one-story houses and a growing number of new townhomes, has experienced a recent rash of driveway robberies and home burglaries. On a recent Sunday afternoon, a group of 10 residents, including Strain, went through training at Shiloh Shooting, a northwest Houston gun range.

Kyle Coplen, the project's 29-year-old founder said his group expects to train at least 50 Oak Forest residents and put up signs saying the neighborhood is armed...."

"Santa Monica Shootings 'Premeditated,' Shooter 'Ready for Battle,' Police Say"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"A man who allegedly killed four people in a shooting spree in Santa Monica, Calif., before being gunned down in a shootout with police in the Santa Monica College library planned out the attack, police said today.

Police said the suspect was wearing a protective vest and carrying so much weaponry he was, in the words of one official, "ready for battle."

"I would presume anytime someone puts on a vest of some sort and has a bag of loaded magazines as an extra receiver, has a handgun and has a semi automatic rifle, carjacks folks, goes to a college, kills more people and has to be neutralized at hands of police -- I would stay that's premeditated," Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said.

Police officials said they had unofficially identified the suspect, but they did not release name because they were working on notifying his next of kin.

They did confirm that the alleged shooter would have turned 24 years old today and that he, along with another family member, had a connection to Santa Monica College..."

"Gun control advocates mark 6 months since shooting"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Six months after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, some of the victims' families are heading to Capitol Hill to remind lawmakers they are painfully waiting for action, while some of the president's allies are asking him to do more without any new prospects of legislation to toughen gun laws.

The lobbying visit Tuesday and Wednesday is one of several observances gun control proponents are planning for the half-year anniversary of the Dec. 14 massacre of 20 first graders and six staff in Newtown, Conn. The Sandy Hook families and other activists are keeping pressure on lawmakers to expand background purchases for firearm sales, despite Senate rejection of the measure in April and no indication votes have shifted.

Nicole Hockley, who lost 6-year-old Dylan at Sandy Hook, said their family's pain has only gotten worse as time goes by without the younger of their two sons at home. She says the fight for new laws, which they've also taken to several states, has left them emotionally exhausted, but they won't give up "no matter how long it takes."

"It is very disappointing that six months have passed, and although we are making progress in individual states, we aren't making progress on the federal level when it comes to background checks when an overwhelming number of Americans support it," she said in a telephone interview.

Gun control advocates also are anticipating further action from President Barack Obama, who said he would do everything he could to stem gun violence even without Congress.

The Center for American Progress, a Washington think tank with close ties to the White House, is asking Obama to issue a dozen more executive actions they say are within his power to reduce gun crimes. The group has been pushing those measures in meetings with the White House, where point man Vice President Joe Biden declared in an email to supporters Friday, "This fight is far from over."

Obama issued 23 executive actions in the aftermath of Sandy Hook and hasn't ruled out doing more. His aides say he isn't planning to announce any new initiatives or hold a gun-related event this week but will likely acknowledge the anniversary.

Arkadi Gerney, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, said their recommendations build on Obama's earlier actions with more specific measures to vigorously prosecute gun crimes. The center's suggestions include a system to alert local police when felons attempt to buy guns, allowing firearms dealers to run the same background checks on their own employees as they do for customers, penalizing states that don't provide mental health data to the background check system and confiscating firearms from domestic abusers...."

"CO: Giron Recall Effort Delivers Petitions, Sets Stage for Second Gun Battle"

[link to thecoloradoobserver.com]

"DENVER–The campaign to recall state Sen. Angela Giron (D-Pueblo) submitted thousands of signatures Monday to the Colorado Secretary of State, the second recall drive fueled by the Democratic legislature’s gun-control bills to deliver petitions in as many weeks.

“To Sen. Angela Giron: Can you hear us now?” said a Monday post on the Pueblo Freedom and Rights Facebook page.

Pueblo Freedom and Rights, the local organization running the recall, reported turning in 13,570 signatures, or 20 percent more than the 11,285 required to force a recall election.

That’s cutting it close, considering that elections experts recommend 20 percent more signatures than necessary. The organization reported using volunteer signature-gatherers, not paid professionals, which inevitably makes gaining signatures more difficult.

“PFR is a 100% grassroots effort, and these signatures were gathered by our tireless volunteers,” said the group’s Monday post. “The people of the 3rd Senate District of Colorado have sent a very clear message that they will not stand idle while their rights are stripped away.”

By comparison, the campaign to recall Senate President John Morse submitted June 3 more than double the necessary 7,178 signatures. That recall effort hired a petition company to gather signatures...."

"Illinois: Concealed Carry Bill Confuses State Gun Laws "

[link to www.webpronews.com]

"Late last year, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down an Illinois state ban on carrying concealed weapons. The Illinois state government was given 180 days to end the ban, sending the state legislature into a legislative session filled with arguments about gun control. Though the legislature did manage to pass a law allowing concealed carrying of handguns with a license, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has not yet signed the bill.

Now, with state law declared unconstitutional and new laws hung up in the governor’s mansion, individual counties are beginning to make their own law. Though the Supreme Court has granted Illinois an extension for modifying its existing laws, county attorney’s in several Illinois counties have now announced that current concealed carry laws will not be enforced.

Last week, Madison County State’s Attorney Thomas Gibbons released an opinion on the matter, stating that citizens of the county can immediately begin carrying concealed firearms, with a few caveats.

“It serves no just purpose to continue to deny responsible, law-abiding citizens their Constitutional right to bear arms,” said Gibbons. “Continuing to criminally charge citizens for conduct that is constitutionally protected and for which charges would, ultimately, be dismissed, would be unconscionable and a terrible waste of judicial resources. Therefore, we will no longer deny responsible citizens this important right.”...

"Mayor Bloomberg Asks Donors to Hold Money After Gun Votes"

"Mayor Bloomberg Asks Donors to Hold Money After Gun Votes
By Julie Bykowicz - Jun 12, 2013 1:47 PM MT

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg today asked more than 1,000 top donors in his city to withhold campaign contributions from the four Senate Democrats who voted against gun-control measures this year.

Bloomberg mailed a letter with his request to major donors of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and to supporters of Senators Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Mark Begich of Alaska, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Max Baucus of Montana, according to a person familiar with the letter who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about it.

Through Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a nonprofit organization he co-founded, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has spent at least $12 million on television advertisements urging passage of stricter gun laws and chastising senators -- Democrats and Republicans -- who oppose such measures. Pryor and Begich are up for re-election next year. Heitkamp doesn’t run until 2018, and Baucus announced April 23 that he is retiring and won’t run for re-election next year. The four voted against a plan to expand background checks for firearm purchasers on April 17 which failed to advance.

“I am writing to ask you: the next time these four Senators want you to support them with donations to their campaigns, tell them you cannot,” Bloomberg’s letter states in part. “Until they show that they will stand up for the American people and not the gun lobby, tell them you cannot support their candidacy.”

Democratic Reaction

The appeal to withhold contributions from Democratic candidates has raised concerns among party leaders that this could affect the balance of power in the Senate in the 2014 midterm election. Democrats hold 52 seats, along with two independent senators who caucus with the majority party.

Turning over the Senate to Republican control, Democrats warn, could make passage of gun control legislation impossible, undermining Bloomberg’s broader goal in the process.

“The only way to pass a background check bill is to maintain a Democratic majority in the Senate, and any efforts that make that less likely are counterproductive,” said Adam Jentleson, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat. “Ninety percent of Democrats agree with the 90 percent of Americans who support background checks, and a Republican majority would guarantee that no background check bill passes in the foreseeable future.”

At the same time, the two targeted Democrats seeking re-election next year are strong candidates “working hard,” said Senator Michael Bennet, a Colorado Democrat who chairs the Senate Democratic campaign committee...."

"$27,500 Gun Hits Targets at 1,000 Yards"

[link to finance.yahoo.com]

"AUSTIN, Texas — A new company in Texas is selling a precision rifle with a unique technology that allows even an inexperienced shooter to hit a target 10 football fields away. The price tag is a staggering $27,500.

Tracking Point describes the weapon as a smartgun, with a trigger wired to the scope so that the gun won't fire until it's locked on the target that's been tagged.

"There are a number of people who say the gun shoots itself," said Chief Executive Officer Jason Schauble, a former Marine captain who was wounded in Iraq. "It doesn't. The shooter is always in the loop."

The TrackingPoint rifles, which are Wi-Fi enabled and have a color display so users can post videos of their shots on Facebook or YouTube, started shipping in May. Schauble said his company is on track to sell as many as 500 of them this year, to clients that he describes as "high net worth hunters" who want to kill big game at long range.

TrackingPoint claims that the gun took down a South African wildebeest at 1,103 yards, a company record.

The company also has a deal to sell about 1,000 of the guns to Remington, which is Schauble's former employer. But the Remington model will be less expensive, running about $5,000 each. TrackingPoint's total sales for the year are expected to be about $10 million.

Lifelong hunter and construction executive Bob Ellis is one client who raves about the rifle. "I have not shot anything like it ever," he said in an email to CNNMoney. "The distance and accuracy of the rifle is a big WOW!..."

"NRA goes after Sen. Manchin over guns compromise"
NRA goes after old friend W.Va. Sen. Manchin in TV ad over his push for background checks

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- After years of showering U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin with stellar ratings and campaign endorsements, the National Rifle Association targeted the West Virginia Democrat with a TV ad launched Wednesday over his continuing push for broader gun buyer background checks.

The new ad urges viewers to phone Manchin's office and tell him "to honor his commitment to the 2nd Amendment." It alleges Manchin "is working" with President Barack Obama, who is deeply unpopular in West Virginia, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a vocal advocate of gun control laws.

Manchin has co-sponsored a background check measure with Sen. Patrick Toomey, R-Pa. It would apply to buyers in commercial settings such as gun shows and online but exempt non-commercial transactions such as sales between friends and relatives. It failed to advance on an April vote, but Manchin has since sought additional support for the measure while remaining open to revising its provisions to ease concerns of gun rights' backers.

Manchin, a former governor, said the NRA is not being honest about his proposal...."

"Nevada governor vetoes bill to strengthen gun background checks"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval on Thursday vetoed Democratic-backed legislation that would have strengthened gun-control rules by requiring background checks on customers in all gun sales in the state, including private transactions.

The Republican governor said in a veto statement that the bill amounted to an erosion of Nevadans' constitutional right to bear arms that would do "little to prevent criminals from unlawfully obtaining firearms."

The bill, which narrowly passed in the state Senate in May and was approved by the Assembly in June, would have also required Nevada courts to send information about legal defendants who are found to be mentally ill to a national clearinghouse for all new gun purchases within five business days after the finding...."

"The past 12 months have been bad for gun violence, but good for Smith & Wesson.

The gun maker reported preliminary results Thursday showing that sales for the fiscal year ended April 30 hit a record $588 million, a 43% increase versus the year prior. Earnings were a record $1.22 a share, up from 40 cents a share in the prior fiscal year.

Both figures came in slightly ahead of analyst expectations. Smith & Wesson (SWHC)shares rose 5.3% in after-hours trading.

The gun industry saw a spike in demand from consumers fearing that the national debate over gun control would yield new regulations limiting their ability to buy certain firearms..."

"'Smart guns' could be next step in gun control"

[link to money.cnn.com]

"A proposal to expand background checks failed in Washington, but several entrepreneurs say they have a different answer to curbing gun violence.

They're using technology to create guns that only fire in the right hands. These so-called smart guns can recognize a watch, a ring or even just a grip.

For more than a decade, researchers at the New Jersey Institute of Technology have been working on a grip-recognizing gun similar to the one James Bond uses in "Skyfall."

Sensors on the grip -- similar to the touchpad on a laptop -- measure the pressure applied and the size and shape of the hand holding the gun.

"If a child tries to grab the gun, their hand geometry is actually going to be smaller," said NJIT Associate Professor Michael Recce. "So they're not going to touch the sensors, and they're not going to be able to fire the gun."

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, about 232,000 guns are stolen every year. Recce says these criminals would not be able to use a grip-recognizing gun.

Another company, Armatix, uses radio frequency technology in its weapons, which unlock with a watch and a PIN. If someone who isn't wearing the watch grabs the gun, it immediately deactivates.

"Anybody who picks up the handgun, whether it's a child or it's actively stolen, they can't activate the watch," said Belinda Padilla, president and CEO of Armatix USA.

Armatix already sells these personalized guns in Europe and Asia..."

Gun control backfires? Rick Perry to lure blue-state gunmakers to Texas -- Strong gun control laws were recently passed in Connecticut and New York, so Gov. Rick Perry will visit gunmakers in both states this week to try to bring them to gun-friendly Texas.

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"The shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., have brought into high relief one of the anachronisms of the American economy: Some of the biggest and most influential makers of firearms in the United States are located in some of its bluest – and most antigun – states.

That is a fact that Gov. Rick Perry (R) of Texas hopes to turn to his advantage this week.

He is scheduled to visit Colt's Manufacturing, which has been in Connecticut since 1847, and Mossberg & Sons of North Haven, Conn., the largest maker of shotguns in the US, among other manufacturers and suppliers in Connecticut and New York.

The visits are the most public move in discussions that have been ongoing for some time, officials say. "We've been reaching out to them via letters and the governor's talked on the phone to some of them," Lucy Nashed, the governor's spokeswoman, told the Connecticut Post. "This is something he's been doing for a long time – talking to companies in different states."

Forcing the issue are sweeping gun-control measures passed first by New York then by Connecticut in response to the Sandy Hook shootings. When Connecticut lawmakers were considering the bills in March, Colt shut down manufacturing for a day and bused 400 workers to the statehouse in a show of force. Other manufacturers did the same.

“We exhausted ourselves testifying during public sessions at the state capital, reaching out to journalists, busing our employees to Hartford and more, but in the end it didn’t matter. They wrote the bill in secret,” Mark Malkowski, president of Stag Arms in New Britain, Conn., told Forbes.

The tone of Gov. Dannel Malloy (D) has frayed the state's relationship with gunmakers further. Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union" after he signed the bill, Governor Malloy said: "What this is about is the ability of the gun industry to sell as many guns to as many people as possible – even if they are deranged, even if they are mentally ill, even if they have a criminal background. They don’t care. They want to sell guns....”

"OFA Gun Control Rally in San Bernardino Draws 3 Protesters"

[link to www.breitbart.com]

"Last week, Obama's political action arm, Organizing For Action, held rallies throughout the country advocating for stricter gun laws. Their rallies drew small numbers as seen here and here.

We can thank the vigilant San Bernardino Sun for putting a spotlight on perhaps the smallest of the rallies.

"On Flag Day growing up, I used to always wave a flag with my grandson, and it hit me that the victims of that horrible tragedy won't ever be able to do that," said Curtis Lewis, the group's gun violence prevention coordinator. "We need people to stand up and write to Congress to say they want laws that respect the Second Amendment but also help prevent these tragedies."

Lewis said he supported HR 1565, a bill that would require background checks for sales at gun shows and online, "close the gun show and other loopholes," and create a commission to study the causes of mass violence in the United States.

The protest drew three members of Organizing for Action, a nonprofit group that supports President Barack Obama's agenda, to the National Orange Show Events Center.

"It's three people today, but it will be 23 next time, and we'll see the time after that," Lewis said.

OFA, by the way, is a 501 (c) (4) group that was able to swiftly obtain its tax exempt status, earlier this year...."

Mental health gun bill goes to Scott's desk
Mental health workers worry bill will backfire

[link to www.news4jax.com]

"TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - A bipartisan gun bill has made its way to the governor’s desk. If signed into law, it will prevent tens of thousands of Floridians from buying firearms, but mental health workers worry the bill will backfire.

”I would think it would be very difficult for the governor not to sign a bill that keeps guns out of the hands of dangerous people with mental illnesses,” said Marion Hammer, of the Nation Rifle Association.

The legislation requires people who volunteer for mental health treatment to give up their gun rights. Mental health professionals want Gov. Rick Scott to veto the legislation.

"We believe in a sense the federal standard is the sound standard, and that is, there needs to be an adjudication,” said John Bryant, of Florida Council for Community Mental Health.

Supporters said the bill will only cover people who would otherwise be committed under the Baker Act. Commitment requires a diagnosis of mental illness and is considered harmful to themselves or others.

Opponents worry the new bill creates unreasonable time frames for doctors to make life altering diagnosis...."

Why is it that the one's who talk the loudest have the biggest problems, including gun violence???

Nation's mayors meet in Vegas amid gun debate -- Nation's mayors meet in Las Vegas to weigh in on gun debate, share ideas about other issues

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The nation's mayors are expected to ask Congress to push anew for stronger background checks for gun buyers.

Dozens of city leaders will consider a resolution demanding gun control legislation during the 81st annual U.S. Conference of Mayors conference, which begins Friday in Las Vegas.

The Democrat-controlled Senate voted against legislation in April that would have expanded background checks for firearm purchases to gun shows and online sales.

"If you do not have a safe city, you do not have a city," Conference of Mayors executive director Tom Cochran said. "We remember those babies in Connecticut and the people who were shot in the Batman movie. At an annual meeting, it would be derelict on our part if we did not call attention to the need for Congress to take action."

Gunmen's rampages at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and in a Colorado movie theater last year led to gun control advocates' renewed push for more firearm restrictions.

At the meeting, big-city leaders including Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will tell of their struggles with crime, foreclosures and unemployment rates, and share ideas for leadership strategies.

The roster of more than 100 resolutions leans heavily toward social issues. In addition to background checks for guns, the mayors will weigh resolutions calling for comprehensive immigration reform, state determination of marijuana laws, and support for urban agriculture...."

"State's Rights" anyone???

Federal nullification efforts mounting in states

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Imagine the scenario: A federal agent attempts to arrest someone for illegally selling a machine gun. Instead, the federal agent is arrested — charged in a state court with the crime of enforcing federal gun laws.

Farfetched? Not as much as you might think.

The scenario would become conceivable if legislation passed by Missouri's Republican-led Legislature is signed into law by Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon.

The Missouri legislation is perhaps the most extreme example of a states' rights movement that has been spreading across the nation. States are increasingly adopting laws that purport to nullify federal laws — setting up intentional legal conflicts, directing local police not to enforce federal laws and, in rare cases, even threatening criminal charges for federal agents who dare to do their jobs.

An Associated Press analysis found that about four-fifths of the states now have enacted local laws that directly reject or ignore federal laws on marijuana use, gun control, health insurance requirements and identification standards for driver's licenses. The recent trend began in Democratic leaning California with a 1996 medical marijuana law and has proliferated lately in Republican strongholds like Kansas, where Gov. Sam Brownback this spring became the first to sign a measure threatening felony charges against federal agents who enforce certain firearms laws in his state.

Some states, such as Montana and Arizona, have said "no" to the feds again and again — passing states' rights measures on all four subjects examined by the AP — despite questions about whether their "no" carries any legal significance.

"It seems that there has been an uptick in nullification efforts from both the left and the right," said Adam Winkler, a professor at the University of California at Los Angeles who specializes in constitutional law.

Yet "the law is clear — the supremacy clause (of the U.S. Constitution) says specifically that the federal laws are supreme over contrary state laws, even if the state doesn't like those laws," Winkler added...."

"BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — Less than a week after Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed gun restrictions into law in April, gun manufacturer PTR Industries said it intended to leave the state to avoid the damage it expected to be inflicted on its business.

On Wednesday, the rifle manufacturer kept its promise, announcing it will move to Aynor, S.C.

“One hundred percent of our product line is now illegal in Connecticut due to that law,” said John McNamara, the company’s vice president for sales.
He offered few details of the relocation, saying that a formal announcement and ribbon-cutting are scheduled for Monday at the new site. Most of the company’s 41 workers will relocate and the labor force is expected to expand to 100 within a year, McNamara said...."

"Rahm Pushes 'Safe Passage' Gun Laws in School Zones After CPS Closings"

[link to www.dnainfo.com]

"CITY HALL — Mayor Rahm Emanuel is proposing tougher penalties for gun possession in designated "school safety zones" as the city prepares to deal the changes this fall stemming from the Chicago Public Schools' decision to close 50 schools.

At Wednesday's City Council meeting, the mayor submitted the ordinance, which will be sponsored on the floor by five aldermen: Latasha Thomas (17th), Jo Ann Thompson (16th), Joe Moreno (1st), Roberto Maldonado (26th) and Walter Burnett Jr. (27th).

The ordinance would create "school safety zones," including designated "safe passage" routes from the closed CPS schools to so-called welcoming schools. The measure would greatly increase penalties for guns, ammunition and other "dangerous weapons" carried into those areas during daylight hours when children are present.

"It is essential that we make sure we do everything to bring safety to all our communities and neighborhoods throughout the city," Emanuel said.

The basic hours would be 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., but would extend past any school event in the evening. The school safety zones would extend 1,000 feet from any school and include any public park with boundaries within that area.

Those convicted would face an initial fine of $1,000 to $5,000 and a mandatory 30-day jail term. Subsequent convictions would lead to increased penalties, including maximum fines of $15,000, then $20,000, and mandatory jail terms of three months, then six months...."

"DENVER–With Colorado’s newly passed gun-control laws scheduled to take effect Monday, gun-rights advocates are planning to mark the occasion by loading up on ammo.

Free Colorado, a non-profit gun-rights group, is hosting an event Saturday called “‘A Farewell to Arms’ Freedom Festival,” billed as “Colorado’s last chance to celebrate the ability to own standard capacity magazines prior to new Colorado laws taking effect on July 1.”

Organizers of the festival, which starts at 4 p.m. Saturday at Infinity Park in Glendale, say the first 1,500 attendees age 18 and over will receive a free Magpul 30-round ammunition magazine, something that will no longer be legal to buy or sell in Colorado as of Monday.

The Democratic legislature passed a measure limiting ammunition-magazines to 15 rounds, although those who buy them before July 1 will be permitted to keep them.

Attorney David Kopel, who filed a lawsuit against two gun bills on behalf of 55 of the state’s 62 county sheriffs, said he had hoped to win a preliminary injunction to stop portions of the magazine bill from taking effect before July 1...."

In a recent study orchestrated by the CDC and carried out by the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council, it was found that individuals involved in violent crimes who defended themselves using techniques other than carrying a gun were more likely to be injured when compared to those who were carrying a concealed firearm.

All-in-all, the Obama ordered report ended up finding more pros than cons in regards to the right to an open or concealed weapon. The report also reminds us of the numerous causes of gun deaths, citing that most gun deaths are at the hands of those who used a gun for their suicide — not homicide. The report highlights the poor state of America’s suffering mental health. The report states that suicide by guns outweighs the amount of deaths caused by violent crimes by 61%...."
