It is a terrible tragedy what happened today. I have to say though, every time I hear about a school shooting I become angry at the 'plans' the schools have for during such events. Some examples of what the teachers are trained to do with the children that are really bad ideas! Take cover under the desk. This is good if maybe the ceiling is falling but a school desk will NOT stop a bullet. Gather together in the corner and huddle after locking the classroom door. Great idea, this way once the assailant gets in the door (he has a gun-he can get in) your all in one clump in the corner so he can shoot you all easy enough. Turn out the lights and sit the children along the wall with the door so the assailant cannot see the children in the room. Walls do NOT stop bullets. We need to start training our teachers on how to really protect groups of people in tactical situations. Teachers need escape plans like fire escape plans are made. Have a route, several alternative routes. Know what to look for and to listen for. GET OUT, RUN from COVER to COVER. Do NOT take my child and cower in the dark corner behind a wooden table and HOPE the assailant does not come in and kill you all. SO while we pray for the families, let us pray for some changes to how we deal with these situations. Read about Columbine, and how many students died waiting in classrooms as they came in and shot them-room after room. How many died hiding under the cafeteria tables, hoping he would not shoot them. A moving target is harder to hit. A really fast moving target among many fast moving targets is really hard to hit. If you can make it across a clear hallway to a room CLOSER to the door, your doing better. COVER to COVER. Like not getting hit by a train...LOOK, LISTEN..then GO. What is the first thing the SWAT team does when they arrive? THEY GET THEM OUT, by looking, listening and going COVER TO COVER. They don't arrive on scene and say, "GREAT, they are all hiding in bunches in locked dark rooms. We are all good." NO, they go in and get them OUT!
