Just poisoned earth, trees, and the wildlife that didn't wander too far into the Red Forest. Then again, there is a rumor about the Chernobyl Yeti. Worst thing you're likely to meet in The Zone today is some poor bastard that got put on guard duty in the shittiest place in Ukraine. Radiation doesn't cause as many mutations as in movies. Usually it just kills you. Quickly or slowly is irrelevant. In fact, there is such a thing as the "Elephant's Foot" which is a chunk of the core that blew away and landed in a building, melted its way into the basement. The side on which I have the phone on the ear feels like burned from ear to the neck, it´s really nasty.
