Netherland guy. People use guns to kill people. Video games teach people how to kill people through repetition, teaching them to become inured and accepting of violence. Don't be an idiot. Wake up and stop defending the indefensible.

Yeah but you still have to be in an enviroment that accepts guns. I play violent video games but have no basis in my reality since I have never seen a real gun in my entire life, besides those the cops have. When I shoot somebody in GTA4 it doesn't feel real for me cause I have never even hold a gun, let alone shoot it, let alone kill somebody with it. I don't even know of a shooting incident in my city, its the stuff that only happens in movies and games for me.

New York Times:

Check out the latest video game titles and themes in the New York Times. They send out an e-mail news teaster and right below the shooting story is an advertisement for "Assasins" etc. Anybody actually think these things don't contribute to this atmosphere of violence is an idiot. These are the things that need banning!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29737536

Although the games are horrible, I think what is broadcast on cable and network TV is just as bad or worse. There is not filter. There is CSI and Criminal Minds and all sorts of violence that are presented as just all in a day's work. Criminal Minds depicts actual torture. What is broadcast over TV is just as harmful. I think any show that depicts violence or porn or even promiscuity should be on a pay-per-view basis -- then maybe people would not become so de-sensitized to violence and immorality.

And, parents who knowingly let their kids play the violent games are bad parents. Actually, most video games even the 'supposedly' non-graphic/violent ones are still violent. Things like Donkey Kong Country returns is pretty much mild on the surface but when you step back and look deeper, all it involves is killing or fighting off crabs, voodoo inspired characters making other character evil, etc...

You're dead wrong. I am writing a piece for our newspaper right now about this very issue. Here is the real problem with american society. And we are exporting this to the whole world.

over the past 50 or so years, americans have isolated themselves in their homes and in their hearts. We have slowly been introducing our young minds to more and more extreme violence.. It started in the movie theaters and moved into our TV's. It started in the music in the 90's with gangbanger shit talking about cop killers and ho's. Then it moved into the video games.

by 2010 our children our inundated with violence.. There children shows are all about snappy comebacks and disrespect. Their is not a single example of love for others shown to them - ANYWHERE! They learn to think only of themselves.

oddly, the nature of children is to care and to share, but their fucked up parents break them of this before they are teenagers.. So a child sees how his parents care only about facebook and their own shit and the child conforms to this.

by the time that child is an adult he doesn't care about you, me or anyone but himself. He truly doesn't care!

let me ask you, do you care at all for a passerby on the street? Do you care at all for the kid behind the register? Do you care at all about the guy in the car to your left? Do you care at alll about the woman in the office down the hall?.

and yet, when a tragedy like this happens all of the sudden we all care. Bullshit! What are your actions going to be? Are you going to write a letter to the families? Will you send flowers? Will you shed a tear? Fuck no! Because deep down in your dead cold heart you DON'T CARE. . And your pride keeps you from even accepting that I am correct and have revealed your true selfish nature.

this is root of the problem! Loveless people are raising loveless kids and have been for decades now. And when those kids snap we all act astonished. Fuck! The guy just did what he had been programmed to do since childhood.. It was in his music, his video games, his tv shows and the movies he watched.

if we don't fix our hearts and start opening up our lives to others we're a doomed society.
 Quoting: RF 1287633

And who buys these violent games with clear rating on them saying 17+ for their 9 year old kids all the time? the parents. who are the ones to blame game developers marketing to an older audience or the Parents too occupied to pay attention to what they are buying and what TV shows they are allowing them to see. I agree TV, Movies, and video games are becoming much more violent and some having heavy propaganda or anti government content. Parents still have to take responsibility to what they let their kids watch and play and their are tons of little 9 year old's playing Call of duty because the Parents are bad.
rant
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29330683

right. Loveless parents raising loveless kids.. The parents today think it is easier to put the kid behind a tv than to play chutes and ladders with them.. Why? Because their parents did it to them with an Atari. Only now, everything either teaches violence or selfishness. Even kids shows are always about getting what you want, not giving to others.

believe me, I have a 6 and 9 yr old and I am fighting society every day.

What happened is sad yes very very sad. I'm a dad and I would be broken if it was my child that this had happened to.

With that said its not the video games/films. Its the parents that allow there kids to view/play these things.

I work in GAME in the UK, I have to let parents know on a daily basis about said games they are buying for there kids. The response 9 out of 10 times is it's ok don't worry his/her friends play it.

You are getting a high off of an act that you yourself probaly would view sickening if it happened in real life. Killing is not good, it is not fun and it is odd that so many people get enjoyment out of playacting. --- All that being said, I don't think guns should be taken away from people. "It's not the video games, FFS! when will people understand it's the mentally ill tards that buy these items and think its then fun to go and do this shit in Real life.

If it was games, then hell why not take it one step further and ban all violent films any type of music that is made in the USA. Then proceed to make happy bunny fairy tale films/music/games. Lets not forget to make fluffy guns that make happy sounds."

This is a profoundly naive argument. Profoundly naive.

This stuff is not GI Joe, Cowboy's and indians stuff. Healthy children will not be healthy for long if exposed to this stuff repeatedly. It's not like they're running around outside and getting exercise while they're at it so there is an actual limit from exhaustion. They're locked in and mesmerized for hours and hours and hours on end. The long-term effects won't be known for a generation probably. Of course not all of them are going to go out and kill people but they're being desensitized. Make no mistake about that and that will show up somewhere in some form in their lives.

Re: It's NOT the guns! It's the VIDEO GAMES FFS!
I;ve been playing games since i was 4 years old.

im 31 now.

And i played the most violent games available.

And trust me.. it's not the videogames that make people violent.

What do you think that gamers are so retarted that they think they kill real people in the game?

No! We understand that we are shooting PIXELS on a screen and not a real human being. We UNDERSTAND we dont really KILL someone.

It's an artfrom in my opinion.

You people who shout: It's the videogames that make killers" You people are ignorant as fuck!

A killer is someone who lives in the dark. Someone not educated in the spiritual self. Someone who is educated in the material perspective.

The real problem is how we educate ourselves in our schools, sciences, politics, etc.

We educate ourselves in materialistic persepectives. It makes us selfish, and always in search of something.

This something we seek as a human is never filled because we look in the wrong way.

We as a species have lost something on the way. We lost our real connection with 'nature'. We are even ingorant of this fact. But we keep the feeling of emptiness.. and try to fill this feeling of emptiness with materialistic things.

But this will not still our hunger. We as a species are distorted.. we are dis-connected..

It's not the outside world that makes us killers. It's inside. It's the deep craving... the endless desire that we carry as a species that can't be fullfilled that drives us to the edge of insanity.

Killers and other 'maniacs' in our society are a reflection of ourselves. They reflect that we are distorted as a species. So don't blame the outside world for our incompetence as a harmonious specie.

Understand that we are looking in the wrong way. That we are on the furthest edge of the furthest edge of ignorance.

We need to turn around and look inward instead of the infinite conflicts we encounter when we keep looking outside for solutions.

Keep fighting the outside world... i wish you luck with this infinite task.

We need to educate ourselves to the inward journey.. to acknowledge that it is WE who are distorted. And the only thing you can do is Change yourself. You cannot change others.. it is impossible to change others, because the only thing that can change someone is their own choice.

If the distortion inside isn't changed, then nothing from the outside will change.

Take away computergames and killers still remain. Then you blame something else outside etc etc etc.

You can't blame the guns. We have children up here in nothern New England who use a gun to hunt at the early age of ten years old. They spend their winters skiing , skating, outdoor activities are very important.

Why in the hell did this mom have weapons in her home with a unstable son living in the same house? All he did was play violent video games.

No it all starts inside of us.

Acknowledge that we are distorted.

Just look at yourself. You blame the outside for the foulness of the inside.

That is insane.

We need to educate ourselves from spirit and not matter

I agree OP but also want to add that parents are not spending enough time with their kids!!! If they were spending more time with the kids, they wouldn't have TIME to play video games in the first place.

None of our kids played video games because we took them to the lake every weekend, 12 months out of the year all the years they were growing up. I was packed and ready to go every Friday after the work/school week. They new this routine and they brought some friends along lots of weekends with us.

In the winter we took them snowmobiling on beautiful trails and had wiener roasts, hot chocolate and treats at the warm up shacks. We also took them ice fishing some weekends.

In the summer it was boating, beaches and fishing on the lake. Picking Saskatoon berries and raspberries on trails. They'd bring friends out then too and set up tents in the back yard and we'd put a TV in the tent for them to watch Disney movies and make popcorn.

Even as teens and now adults, they still come to the lake with friends and boat and snowmobile to this day!!! It's in their blood now, outdoor kids.

I swear, this is what does kids good, just spending time doing things with them and enjoying their company and I'm sure this is why my kids are all doing so well TODAY!

Re: It's NOT the guns! It's the VIDEO GAMES FFS!
I know this is probably crazy but could it be that some parents teach their kids right from wrong and others are the reason certain kids would be so influenced by things that most of us only see as entertainment?

I mean, I grew up playing Mortal Kombat, a game that, at the time, was heavily controversial for it's advocacy of violence. I've never felt the need to take my problems out on other people by emulating the game though. For some mystic reason, violent video games didn't turn me into a mass murderer.

When a community fails, they look for someone to blame. When it's not video games, it's movies. When it's not movies, it's music. Perhaps some people are just too concerned with the way everyone else raises their kids that they forget to raise their own.

I'm debated, disputed, hated and viewed in America as a motherfucking drug addict... like you didn't experiment?

Now, now, that's when you start to stare at who's in the mirror and see yourself as a kid again and you get embarrassed and I got nothing to do but make you look stupid as parents. You fucking do-gooders... too bad you couldn't do good at marriage!

Where do you draw the line when you define violence though? One could argue that a children's cartoons with a character that sings "Kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit..." is teaching kids that violence is entertaining.

Is it acceptable because it's a cartoon? Should adults be frowned upon for finding movies like Pulp Fiction entertaining?

Somewhere along the way, kids became more and more sheltered and when a few saw the "real world", it was too much for them and they reacted in an unacceptable way. I know too many people that have a hard time accepting that life isn't a Disney movie and they're always the ones who overreact to the most trivial things. Fundamentally speaking, is murder not an "overreaction"?

As a game developer, I was expecting this subject to come up. I can see how a lot of people could hold the games industry responsible for "training" this psychopath but let me point out this one fact.

All excessively violent games are rated Mature. That is equivalent to a rated R movie. If you see a 10 year old playing Call Of Duty, that child has parents who bought that game for them.

I grew up in the times of Mortal Kombat being demonized for everything and guess what, I couldn't buy the game at first. My parents waited till I was a few years older and explained how this fantasy violence wasn't ok in the real world...I think I was around 14 at the time? Point being, parents should not be buying extremely violent games for their kids...and if they do they should have a few very long talks with them. Also game shops aren't permitted to sell them, and online download software like Steam makes the account user verify age with each purchase. We developers of mature rated games ,make games for people our own relative age... 17-30+

Be a good parent. Because I'm disgusted when I see a mature game in the hands of a child... To me it's like handing them a pornographic magazine and expecting them to figure it out themselves.

A list of a few games out that are rated mature and not meant for kids:

Mass Effect series
Call of Duty series
Assassins Creed series
Far Cry 3
Dishonored
Diablo 3

If you see anyone under the age of 17 playing these, know that the parents bought it for them or gave their consent online for download.

Re: It's NOT the guns! It's the VIDEO GAMES FFS!

I miss the days of Mortal Kombat for SNES being criticized for not having blood... then they came back with MKII and it kicked a great magnitude of ass.

It's not the guns or the video games. It's young people reacting to how fucked up everything is in this world. The future looks very bleak and young people are angry.

How would you behave if you knew that you had no future?

There were no shootings like this. Taking the extreme to prove a point are you? Video games, music videos, etc... it's all violence. They weren't shooting people on game consoles all day in the 70s dear. There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Have you ever heard the song by the Boomtown Rats called "I don't like Mondays".

You've obviously lived a sheltered life, and feel the need to disregard history, even in your own Country.

Netherland guy. People use guns to kill people. Video games teach people how to kill people through repetition, teaching them to become inured and accepting of violence. Don't be an idiot. Wake up and stop defending the indefensible.

And all the wars and violence going on in the world teaches them that this is not how people should behave. This gives them something to look up to?
