It's called the National Firearms Act of 1934.

This is yet another example of how the politicians and media prove what morons they truly are by throwing around terms that they have absolutely no idea what they mean.

By definition, an "assault weapon" is one that fires in full automatic mode. Period.

For the average man-on-the-street, here is a term that they may be more familiar with: Machine Gun.

Since the NFA of 1934, the only way you can legally own an assault weapon is to get the prior approval of the BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives), get the approval of the chief law enforcement officer (CLEO) of your county and pay a $200 tax. The BATFE classifies such items as Class III weapons.

You also cannot own current model assault weapons, but only those models manufactured and registered with the BATFE before May 19, 1986.

But all of the ignorant people classify anything that "looks scary" as an assault weapon.
