User ID: 29977149 12/16/2012 01:29 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So...besides the Sultan Sea and the Baja Quake last week...is there anything else that could cause a sealevel rise in the AZ area? [link to www.youtube.com] Just a thought! (Thank you to poster on the "Conversation"Thread for this info on the Hawaii Tsunami history!) Not to add or detract from the credibility of this thread ... but anything about Hawaii, the Big Island in particular, being strange and out of the normal pops right to the top of my attention sensors. In the big earthquake in '75 (7.2 size) the Big Island of Hawaii actually split and about 1/3 of it dropped towards the sea. Most only slid a few inches but parts of it dropped 20 to 40 feet. There is in fact now a visible rift across part of the island on top in one location where one part of the island can be seen to have physically pulled away from the other part of the island by 30 to 40 feet or so. ALL of the Islands in Hawaii have a history of splitting off parts and then having part of the island fall into the sea creating a HUGE Pacific Wide Tsunami . Those events are estimated to happen once every 100,000 - 250,000 years or so. In fact there is now geological evidence that Australia HAS been hit with huge tsunamies in the past, ones large enought to rush past what is now Sydney and reach all the way to the Blue Mountains which start inland a few tens of miles. Because of my research into that slip on the Big Island in 1975, where part of the island started to slide into the sea AND THEN STOPPED after only traveling a few inches, anything that crops up that indicates anything geologically unusual wrt Hawaii (the Big Island) always catches my attention. It is because of my interest in the Hawaii situation that I have always paid attention to the work of a projection of a Global Coastal Event, a projection that has been around for a number of years now. If you hear about a HUGE EQ hitting Hawaii and live anywhere near the Pacific Coast I would be heading up into the hills even before any indication of any issues with a tsunami. Once any huge tsunami indication occures traffic away from the coast will become a nightmare and one will basically be trapped. Other coasts (Atlantic - Europe as well as the US) will have a few more hours before anything would hit, but if it is big enough it WILL spill around the world, though with much much less impact. Quoting: Concerned about Hawaii 25450407 link to more information on the 1975 Hawaii EQ: [link to www.drgeorgepc.com] The major earthquake of 29 November 1975 occurred east of the area that had been affected by the earthquake of 3 April 1868. The crustal movements involved uplift, subsidence and slope failure along the Hilina Slump of the Kilauea volcano, on the southern coast of the Island of Hawaii. A large crustal block slid horizontally towards the ocean and partly subsided, while the offshore area uplifted. Maximum horizontal displacement of approximately 7.9 meters (26 feet) and vertical subsidence of approximately 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) occurred near Keahou Landing. The displacements decreased to the east and west. In fact, subsidence decreased rapidly to the west. At Punalu'u, the shoreline actually uplifted by about 10 centimeters (4 inches) (Pararas-Carayannis 1975). Subsequent surveys determined subsidence of about 3 meters (9.8 feet) at Halape Park to the east. The large coconut grove area adjacent to the Beach Park subsided by as much as 3.0 and 3.5 meters (10-11.5 feet). Further to the east, the subsidence decreased to 1.1 meters (3.6 feet) at Kamoamoa, 0.8 meters (2.6 feet) at Kaimu, 0.4 meters (1.3 feet) at Pohoiki, and 0.25 meters (0.8 feet) at Kapoho. The coastline was not the only altered area. According to the Volcano Observatory of the U.S. Geological Survey, even the summit of Kilauea subsided by about 1.2 meters (3.9 feet) and moved towards the ocean by about the same amount. A small, short-lived eruption took place inside Kilauea's caldera, apparently triggered by the earthquake. A better understanding of the pattern of displacements in the offshore region was deduced from inspection of the local tide gauge records of the tsunami. The records show an upward initial tsunami wave motion (see tide gauge records below). This indicates that the offshore portion of the displaced crustal block actually uplifted, as the onshore section subsided and moved outward. Also, this pattern of crustal movement indicates that the flank failure of Kilauea was not entirely due to gravitational effects of instability, but may have been partially caused by compressional lateral magma migration from shallow magmatic chambers of the volcano, or by lateral magmastatic forces along an arcuate failure surface, or along a secondary zone of crustal weakness on the upper slope of the Hilina Slump. In fact, recent paleomagnetic studies (Riley et al., 1999) show that differential rates of movement and rotation occur between sections of the Hilina Slump. This would support that Kilauea's flank failures can be triggered by several mechanisms. Last Edited by SilentlyKnowing on 12/16/2012 01:31 PM "LIFE is a wonderful, wonderful OPERA...escept it hurts! | MarkinAZ User ID: 20006444 12/16/2012 02:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I do remember a couple of newscasters quoting the USGS staff in saying that they found the quake there "disturbing" or "odd" and would be watching it intently for the next 48 hours. How much more USGS is going to say or not say is probably under a presidential / fema directive. There is only so much they are "allowed" to say. There is a national fear of setting off a panic among the sheeple. So info is released to all of us in tiny bit-sized pieces and we're given plenty of time to chew and digest one before another is proffered. Right now, USGS has said a LOT (when you take into account just how controlled and tightly regulated their announcements usually are.) To say they found an event "disturbing" and would be "intensely monitoring" the area ... such comments are, for the USGS, major keywords and should not be taken lightly by the public. With most of these Federal Agencies, you can assume their ability to communicate with the public is tightly controlled and monitored. While there are certainly blanket agencies (like FEMA) and the White House who determine just how much or how little info the public will get at any given moment in time - often times the agencies such as USGS will choose their words VERY carefully and in doing so attempt to convey to the public a degree of candor or fact not allowed by their overseers. Phrases like "disturbing" or "intensely monitoring" are among the key words they can get away with using, and such key phrases are chosen to convey the seriousness or even the degree of disaster potential picked up and calculated by the agencies, which otherwise would never be made public for fear of the afore-mentioned public panic caused by a truly candid announcement. ...AND...ANOTHER THOUGHT! Quoting: SilentlyKnowing In the referenced thread about the conversation that is overheard.... He's even decided to leave the new holiday trailer behind because it would take too long to get the new hitch installed for the fifth wheel to pull it. He's in a hurry. Out of there tomorrow. My other sister and husband don't know what to do. They all just got down there in the last 30 days. Don't want to leave but on the other hand...... They just might head inland and go cruising around instead. Hard decision to make for them. Wait and see. I think they are mad at my Brother Inlaw. Somtimes people just don't want to know. |

When we were in Yuma/Quartzsite and were just tent-camping, we had a really bad thunderstorm/ tornado. It completely trashed our camping site and we had to replace everything.
