OP - The real reason is something else entirely:

Guys have to make extreme efforts to prevent ANYONE(male or female) from thinking that they might be gay. If such a rumor ever gets started, no girl will take the guy seriously as a lover rather than friend, and any attempt to deny or clarify will hinder, rather than help. Guys don't want to be associated with anyone that might be gay for the same reason.
