As a person with Asperger's I am dismayed with Picoult's portrayal of an adult with Asperger's Syndrome. Picoult starts off by showing us all the sources she has used for her research but once one starts reading it is obvious she is so full of research she doesn't know what to do with it. She has taken every possible symptom of both Asperger's and autism (which are two different diagnoses) and put them all into the character of Jacob. Not only is Jacob loaded down with every single symptom, each of his symptoms are of the most extreme variety. A real-life 'aspie' (as we call ourselves) will have some, perhaps even many, but certainly not all textbook examples, of the symptoms and then they are at varying degrees. What Picoult has done here is a disservice to the Asperger's community.

From the mother: "Since there's no cure yet for Asperger's, we treat the symptoms ...". Asperger's is not a disease or an illness! There is no cure because one is not needed. Just from reading the positive reviews of this book I see the word "illness" being used over and over to describe Asperger's and that is because the book has left readers unfamiliar with AS with that impression. I could sit here and write an essay refuting all the quotes on the dog-eared pages I created while reading, but I won't. If you want a realistic view of a young man with Asperger's I urge you to read the book "Marcelo in the Real World" by Francisco X. Stork. The main character is 17 years old and is very comparable to Jacob only the author has done an excellent job in portraying Asperger's, showing the struggles we face but also shows that we do indeed function and do not need anyone's sympathy.

You are correct in that there are a couple of possible shills here since last night trying to post absurd matches. These absurd matches were an attempt to DERAIL the progress being made with the Hochsprung, psychologist Sherlach/husband, and Kaitlin matches - these were matches that everyone AGREED on.

The school psychologist/ husband and Dawn Hochsprung are NOT shill posts. As a matter of fact, I am the one who found most of those above matches that you agree with, in addition to Dawn and the school psychologist. This thread absolutely came alive last night with agreement on these matches! There was a possible shill who tried to debunk and substitute ridiculous alternative matches for Hochsprung ad Kaitlin (tried to say the blond woman in Israel was BOTH Dawn and Kaitlin).

Other than that questionable commenter, YOU are the only person so far who does not agree that the school psychologist and her husband are those people in the Greenberg album. This is a COUPLE match! That is much stronger than a single face match. I repeat - your visual discernment differs from the majority of us with eyes to see. And the Dawn Hochsprung match is also widely agreed upon here.

Okay, Mr., I just found your last "contribution" to this thread above. Your superior "visual discernment" couldn't even tell that Jennifer Greeenberg Sexton and husband were the Phelps. The connection was "iffy" to you. so if you couldn't see that right away, then none of us would expect you to have the ability to see the Sherlach psychologist and her husband. They are made up to look older, but everyone else here has the ability to see this.

Have you seen the Greenberg albums yourself? If you were to go to the albums you would see many pictures of this woman. Did you notice that Mary Sherlach's nose slants off to the right at the bottom? This is a very strange and unique nose. The Greenberg album woman has the same exact nose, easily seen in her photos. You need to go and peruse the 1500 Greenberg photos yourself as the rest of us are doing, before making your judgements determinations.

I have perused the albums. I have pored over the pictures that have been presented. I'm as interested in this bizarre case as the rest of you are.

I opened this picture of the Greenbergs and knew immediately that this is VICTORIA SOTO. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that these are the same people. Look at the nose, chin, forehead...

Hi OP. Very good point about the years difference. Not only are the Sherlach's made up to LOOK older, but the pics of this couple from the Greenberg album are old pictures. This means that the real couple, in real life, is actually years older than they are in the GB albums.

And I also agree with you on the Hochsprung match. I am not 100% sure and have said that. But I do think with the two moles matching, hairline, eyes, wrinkles around eyes, freckled chest, perfect lips and teeth match - that it is a good possibility. The only real difference many of us see is the GB woman's chin is longer. This can be surgically altered. Also, remember that the GB pictures of this woman are also years old.

I just remembered that I was not the very first person to match Dawn H. Someone matched her in the early pages, and I didn't think it was a correct match. It was only after looking at many pics of this woman that I began to really change my mind. The smile is identical, along with other features. I don't expect us all to agree. I just know that my first impressions of that Dawn H. match have changed. This is a fluid unraveling.

I have to say that the above link to Mary Sherlach pictures did not have me convinced from the beginning. But, I found a different picture of the Greenberg (not quite sure of her name) and it shows a little better how it could be possible. Still not 100% convinced, but that's a better photo to compare, IMO.
