In John 3, Jesus teaches Nicodemus how to be born again in spirit. And wonders why, as a Pharisee, Nicodemus has never heard of this concept.

These ideas were around before Jesus. It's only through following what Jesus said in life can we follow in his footsteps into the Kingdom of God. But Jesus' ideas were not new.

I especially like what Jesus said in the Gospel of Thomas ( [link to gnosis.org] The saying within are the earliest examples of the secret teachings of Jesus to his closest followers. The sayings follow closely with many sayings found in the four canonical gospels.
