My kid's school district just called with a recorded message that said the creepiest thing....UPDATE: New msg

They called here last night but didn't mention the Mayans:

I told my daughter she can (is) staying home on Friday 12/21 but she said they have finals. I really do not know what to do.

i got some red karma saying i made this up. i would NEVER do something like that. especially in the midst of the tragedies that have happened.

I got a similar message from our school district here in Ohio, but just about the shooting and extra precautions. My 8 year old wanted to know all the kids names, go through each of their pictures, learn about them...I indulged him and sat here with him and cried reading about each child who lost their lives.

He's been scared to sleep by himself the last two nights, scared to walk to the bathroom by himself, scared to go to school, worried that the same thing can happen at his school or in our home...

My knee jerk reaction is just to pull the kids out of school and never let them leave my sight again, lol, but, that's not very logical. I've been telling all of them to be extra aware of their surroundings, that people may do things this week that they wouldn't do otherwise.

I've instructed my kids to NOT be fish in a barrel at school. If their school ever does experience something like this shooting, to RUN as fast as they can run. Jump out a window, and run to the nearest house with a car in the driveway.

I never thought in a million years I'd have to discuss these things with my kids.

I would feel much better if there were armed guards at every entrance of their buildings...Ugh...Never thought I'd say that either...

I actually have an idea of which District you are referring to as I was told this by someone else already who have kids in that District.

The Mayan thing was probably mentioned because the kids are a bit freaked out over there. My son is special needs and I have had to make sure to let him know it is JUST a calendar. He said it is all his friends talk about.

It is a very sad world that we live in and so much has changed in just 15 years. Children deserve their innocence but you also have to prepare them at a young age for any dangers they may encounter. Sure no talk given by a parent could have saved their child from the horrors that unfolded in Newtown. But these children did not run away because they had no idea what was unfolding around them. Then again, who would ever think you would have to prepare your child for a massacre unfolding in an elementary classroom. This proves their are some seriously deranged individuals in this world and even if there is a ban on firearms, humans have murdered, maimed, and raped since the beginning of time. Someone hell bent on killing children at a school could just as easily walk in with a power tool or chainsaw. Are we going to outlaw these when events like this continue to happen? Guns are dangerous but I believe an adult should have the option of owning one to protect his family and property or for sports. But if you leave your firearm lying around and your child or a mentally unstable person gains access to it you should go to prison. If they murder someone, you should be charged with murder. Hell, children choke on plastic bags all of the time and it is normally due to the irresponsibility of whoever is responsible for them. I'm not turning this into a debate about firearms because I am honestly sick of talking about it. Most of these events transpire from broken families and children who have been taught no moral values because their parents have none.

i mean going over the top with the mayan thing is one thing, but not addressing the issue at all is worse.
