Christmas is kind of stinky in that my kids are off from the 21st til Jan 7th. Screws up everyones schedule and makes it harder to get them back into the swing of things. It will be nice having my little one with me though, at least I know he's safe when he's here.

Stay home on the 21st. The world's not going to end or anything like that, but the nuts may be out doing crazy shit. Better to stay safe at home with your kids. In fact, I'd stay home for the whole period maybe 12/20 through 12/23 or so. Stay home for the weekend if you can.

I was thinking that also. What is scary to me is when the 21st comes and passes, all of the depressed people out there. I just read one family has stored 25,000 rounds of ammo and have enough food to last 50 years.

And we think there is a mental health issue now, the 21st may very well be a page turner.

Just sounds a bit off that they're taking additional safety precautions just because of the Mayan calender. I would understand the shootings but also the Mayan calender? The world's not going to end, but even if it does there's not much we can do about it. Except go on with our lives and hope that it's quick.

People don't need added fear on top of what's already there and with the recent shootings they already have quite enough fear. Just sounds strange that they'd add it in too.

We're in Aurora and we got a robocall saying that there would be councelling for any student who needs it...which is totally understandable considering. The Mayan stuff being mentioned in your call is super weird, though. Probably just saying that they don't want crazies who think the world is ending anyway deciding to take some kids out with them...but you just never know...

I live in Jefferson County, fairly close to Columbine and Deer Creek Middle School (site of ANOTHER school shooting a couple of years ago, although two students were "only" injured and not too badly) and not too far from Platte Canyon, site of another shooting not too long ago, either. So, I am just wondering if they are being extra cautious just because we have had more than our share of "crazies."

I'm in central California and my kids don't have school on the 21st..

Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I was in high school about 3 years ago so I would certainly know of their bullshit tactics.

I was naive back then and struggling with bullying, my sexuality, and my home life. Every visit to the counseling office ended up being an incredibly invasive interrogation of what my family's religion was like, what feelings I had for other girls, what other girls I might have feelings for, etc. Nothing was ever actually done about the harassment being thrown in my general direction on a daily basis, and this pretty much seemed like the furthest things from their minds; as they pried into my personal life and tried to get me to admit repeatedly on the record that my family wasn't very "traditional" and it seemed like a thinly veiled attempt to lead that admission in the direction of severe familial abuse.

I didn't want to be taken away from my family, I never wanted CPS involved. I just wanted someone to listen to me when things were frustrating at home and I got bullied at school. Hardly a unique story! I gave up the counselor's office around junior year and tried to avoid any contact with the administration like the plague.

My decision about this was reached after an incident where they broke confidentiality and told my parents about my bi-curiosity under the guise of informing them about the bullying. In other incidents with bullying that had nothing to do with my orientation, parents were not called, no action was taken. I looked into legal action towards the school for doing this to me, but found that unless my parents were going to cooperate there was nothing I could really do. My parents, quite frankly, were just glad that they let them in on that little secret and then they could silently judge me at home.

Knowing this is GLP I will probably get a lot of homophobia thrown my way, but this is what it is. A bullshit, Orwellian system of schooling that preys on the fears and insecurities and prejudices that the administration may hold to goad kids into feeling harassed to play along. It also trains them to tear families apart and prey on any "weird kid" who isn't fitting the mold so their parents must not be, either.

Mayan Doomsday coverage? I haven't seen anything in the MSM for days about it. And months if you toss out the stupid fluff pieces they have done.

My advice to you is to go into your schools and make sure the security measures are in place. My elem school failed- BIG TIME!!!! What they did this morning scared me... I had to tell them were their lapse was.

Update today. My sister said the news and police were up at their high school in Batavia, Ohio. Apparently a girl said she was coming into school with guns and had a hitlist. The police are investigating her. One of the parents called and was very upset with the principal and wanted to know why they were not notified. 3 days had passed? The principal said thepolice were looking into the situation but nothing has happened yet. She told him she was taking her child out of school the rest of the year and he told her that was absolutely fine and that her son would not receive any failing grade for missing work. Then quietly said he honestly wished he did not have to be there Friday either. I didn't understand that last comment.

My sister called me and her voice was shaking. She also is keeping her son out, as this girl was in one of his classes.

Such a sad time we live in.
