This 1000x thats why im going out to the country for the weekend. Not taking any risk in the city with a bunch of people doped up on Prescription drugs.

I was thinking that also. What is scary to me is when the 21st comes and passes, all of the depressed people out there. I just read one family has stored 25,000 rounds of ammo and have enough food to last 50 years.

And we think there is a mental health issue now, the 21st may very well be a page turner.

Update today. My sister said the news and police were up at their high school in Batavia, Ohio. Apparently a girl said she was coming into school with guns and had a hitlist. The police are investigating her. One of the parents called and was very upset with the principal and wanted to know why they were not notified. 3 days had passed? The principal said thepolice were looking into the situation but nothing has happened yet. She told him she was taking her child out of school the rest of the year and he told her that was absolutely fine and that her son would not receive any failing grade for missing work. Then quietly said he honestly wished he did not have to be there Friday either. I didn't understand that last comment.

My sister called me and her voice was shaking. She also is keeping her son out, as this girl was in one of his classes.

Such a sad time we live in.

i picked up mine from school today.
i was parked out front and watched all the kids come out of the school when the last bell rang. they let the little ones out first, going grade by grade. i cried...broke down and wept. i cried watching the happy faces emerge from the building thinking to myself how anyone could do such a thing to these babies. thinking to myself that it is tragic that i am afraid to send my child to school.

Don't. Humanitys twisted. I'm surprised they haven't cancelled school for the 21.

I don't blame you one bit! I would have done the same if I had been able to today. Was soooo happy to pick the little one up from his Daddy's after work. Just to know I got one more day with his smiling little face and his voice filled with enthusiasm...Makes me thank God he's a talker, lol. The tragedy in Connecticut has really made me stop and appreciate my kiddos more than I already did.

I don't know how such monsters even exist. Honestly. It is a tragedy that will affect us all for a long time to come.

Salt,
Did you ever get to ask anyone at the school what the mayan part of the message was all about?
Ephesians 2:8-10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Re: My kid's school district just called with a recorded message that said the creepiest thing....UPDATE: New msg
Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I was in high school about 3 years ago so I would certainly know of their bullshit tactics.

I was naive back then and struggling with bullying, my sexuality, and my home life. Every visit to the counseling office ended up being an incredibly invasive interrogation of what my family's religion was like, what feelings I had for other girls, what other girls I might have feelings for, etc. Nothing was ever actually done about the harassment being thrown in my general direction on a daily basis, and this pretty much seemed like the furthest things from their minds; as they pried into my personal life and tried to get me to admit repeatedly on the record that my family wasn't very "traditional" and it seemed like a thinly veiled attempt to lead that admission in the direction of severe familial abuse.

I didn't want to be taken away from my family, I never wanted CPS involved. I just wanted someone to listen to me when things were frustrating at home and I got bullied at school. Hardly a unique story! I gave up the counselor's office around junior year and tried to avoid any contact with the administration like the plague.

My decision about this was reached after an incident where they broke confidentiality and told my parents about my bi-curiosity under the guise of informing them about the bullying. In other incidents with bullying that had nothing to do with my orientation, parents were not called, no action was taken. I looked into legal action towards the school for doing this to me, but found that unless my parents were going to cooperate there was nothing I could really do. My parents, quite frankly, were just glad that they let them in on that little secret and then they could silently judge me at home.

Knowing this is GLP I will probably get a lot of homophobia thrown my way, but this is what it is. A bullshit, Orwellian system of schooling that preys on the fears and insecurities and prejudices that the administration may hold to goad kids into feeling harassed to play along. It also trains them to tear families apart and prey on any "weird kid" who isn't fitting the mold so their parents must not be, either.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24918651

Sorry, AC. That does sound like incredibly ignorant and egregious "counseling." I'm sorry your family isn't understanding in the way you'd wish for, as well. ...In time, you'll realize high school to be a rather insignificant part of one's life, for those who have an independent mind and are not part of the herd...and you sound very intelligent and self-aware for your age. I am female and gay, and things definitely get better in time.

Not all schools are that way. More and more, I hear of bi and gay kids having a rather "normal" time of things in high school, which is really heartening. Of course one's experience still varies widely, in different parts of the country. Some areas are bafflingly ignorant still.

hugs

...I had wanted to add that a woman at work today said that her kids' school sent note home today saying students are no longer allowed to wear dark clothing, dark shoes, camoflage clothing, or caps. ?!?! ...This is a public school that already requires uniforms, so this applies to the clothing choices they can make on their occasional "dress down" days. This is in Pennsylvania.

I took my child to school yesterday and picked him up.

I noticed 3 police cars sitting outside of the entrances in the morning. Not sure what they were there for, could have been anything I suppose but I found it odd, I take him to school regularly and you don't see that.

Still, the school hasn't mentioned anything about what happened the other day and they haven't talked about security measures. I guess not all schools will be doing that.
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

In France, people are joking around the "end of world", but we can feel a growing anxiety. Medias are making a lot of buzz (some TV channels put a banner "end of world - X hours").

Yesterday, I was with a Paris firefighter, and he told me they have received instructions for the 21, army and police also, to be ready for people goind mad (shootings, suicides, mob panic...)
No specific instructions for schools, as far as I know, but a lot of people are planning to keep kids at home, "just in case".

Re: My kid's school district just called with a recorded message that said the creepiest thing....UPDATE: New msg
UPDATE:

There were rumors of some type of violence for Friday the 21st which have been investigated and found not to be credible.

From the message:
There is nothing more important to us than the safety of our students and staff. I recognize the tragedies from last Friday, along with intense media coverage have raised concerns about safety in our schools. As we stated in prior communications, *** School District is aware of rumors regarding safety issues on Friday, December 21.

Please know that administrators, local law enforcement, and security personnel have fully investigated all rumors and reports of potential safety issues. They have found no credible evidence to substantiate them. As such, schools will be open on Friday, December 21, 2012 as scheduled. Increased security measures will remain in place. Having the assurance of our local law enforcement agency that they will continue their remarkable efforts to be highly visible on school campuses helped us with the decision to remain open. Please know that if administration believes there is any credible threat to students or staff, necessary precautions, such as school closure, will be taken to ensure everyone’s safety.

I understand that some of you may disagree with the decision to remain open on Friday and I respect that. If parents feel that keeping their children home from school on Friday, December 21 is warranted, they should contact their school’s attendance office to report the absence.

Still not sure if I'm comfortable with the oldest going.

We're supposed to get a nasty bit of weather here starting tomorrow night though so I'm hoping it cancels school for Friday.

I am an evil giraffe, and I shall eat more leaves from this tree than perhaps I should, so that other giraffes may die.

Re: My kid's school district just called with a recorded message that said the creepiest thing....UPDATE: New msg
"Due to the recent shootings and the Mayan calender doomsday media coverage, the ****** School District will be taking additional safety precautions. All entries to the school will remained locked during school hours and emergency drills will be canceled. Additional emotional support and counseling will be available to the students."

I haven't got the creeps like this since the 1989 SF earthquake when the radio went silent and the air-raid whistles went off.

Why add the Mayan stuff with the shooting?
WTH?
