Case Illustration of Language Mapping

"To demonstrate the clinical and investigational utility of language mapping with ESA, we recently published our results in a patient with intractable epilepsy. For more details of this case, see the paper in Neurology 2001; 57(11): 2045-2053, as well as its accompanying editorial on pp. 1947-1948, as well as an upcoming paper in Aphasiology (in press), or email Dr. Nathan Crone to request reprints.

In summary, the patient had normal hearing and was fluent in both speech and sign language (she was a professional sign language interpreter). Using ESA, we studied brain activation during three word production tasks (word reading, word repetition, and picture naming). All three tasks were repeated with spoken and with signed responses. The inputs for these word production tasks used either visual stimuli (naming and reading) or auditory stimuli (repetition), and the outputs consisted of either spoken or signed responses. To study brain activation during these tasks, we used two different ESA indices of brain activation: event-related augmentation of gamma band (80-100 Hz) power (see paper in Neurology), and event-related suppression of alpha (8-12 Hz) band power (see paper in Aphasiology), a.k.a. event-related desynchronization (ERD)."
