"A cold front has descended on many Chinese provincial capitals, with temperatures in some cases hitting well below -20 C, while temperatures in parts of central and eastern areas are predicted to hit record lows, China's National Meteorological Centre said." Some areas in Inner Mongolia witnessed the mercury falling to -40 C on Saturday and yesterday. The lowest temperature recorded in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, was -29 C yesterday, not much colder than the highest of -22 C. Tomorrow is predicted to be the coldest day, when the thermometre is expected to record -33 C. Beijing has been shivering over the weekend, with the lowest temperature yesterday falling to -13 C. As cold as this was, it was just short of the 10-year record -13.5 C, said Chen Dagang, senior engineer at Beijing meteorological bureau. But the record is expected to be smashed today when the mercury is expected to read -15 C. [link to www.asianewsnet.net] |

Now, granted, it did get cold, but it's also the Winter, that's kinda what happens during the winter. Heck, your China data doesn't back up anything, as it's not even a 10 year record, let alone an all time record low. Weather happens, and yes, patterns are changing (I'm not one to argue that). But the warning smelled of imminent doom, and that is not what happened here, at all. |

As cold as this was, it was just short of the 10-year record -13.5 C, That's your own quote. Not even a 10 year low. Now maybe, MAYBE it did hit a 10 year low after. That's still not all that notable. Again, it's winter, record lows for any particular day (as well as highs) are broken on almost a yearly basis. (Over the course of say, 90 days, odds are one of those days will be a record breaking weather day either for the high or the low, or for precipitation, it's a statistical probability). That being said, the climate is (gradually) shifting. I won't argue that. My problem was all the doom and gloom associated with this thread here. It's not the end of the world (not saying you in particular were saying it was). But that is the vibe I got from the thread overall. |
