Why do Americans need guns?

The concept that is totally "new" in the Bill of Rights, which differentiates it from it's English predecessors is the concept that governments are made by MAN, and can be abolished.

English tradition holds that it is the King that is chosen by God, and that the government holds it's own authority.

American tradition however, takes this to the next degree, pronouncing that government gets it's authority by the consent of the governed. Government only exists to protect the rights of the people.

"Verities" are timeless, and universal.

The point of the Declaration of Independence is that it is the "People" who are the entity with rights, they are responsible for the government that serves them.

If the government stops serving the people, becomes tyrannical, then it is the duty of the people to change it, any way they must.

It would be an empty charge upon the people if they had no means to keep the government in line.

They must have the 2nd amendment to do it. If they lose the right to bear arms and form militias, it makes this concept null and void. Tyranny will win.

Let's make a thought-experiment.

Society is split into two segments, divided by a wall. On the other side guns are allowed and everybody is free to kill each other. The other side bans guns.

Then each person must choose which side of the wall to live. Where would you like to go?

To fight a tyrannical government which they do not do.
They, when the time comes, will join a populist and kill each other. Over freedoms that do not exist.

Americans will not just simply hand over their weapons. They will certainly 'fight a tyrannical government', I assure you , they will do so.

When the knock comes to the door, unlike so may Europeans in the 1930s and 40s, they will have the means to fight and they will.

I think what is being overlooked by those that want stronger gun control is the fact that even without guns the U.S. homicide rate would still be higher than most EU countries. We would still be looking at 1.9 homicides per 100,000 after removing those involving guns. That is higher than the UK, Ireland, France and Poland. Obviously Americans are a violent group by nature.

Why do you think that the other side that bans guns will have no killing?

Killing by many means still happen in areas where guns are banned. Look at Chicago, New York, and Washington D.C.

Bad guys who disobey laws that ban guns still do plenty of killing.

Your argument is not valid. It is oversimplification to think that guns and killing are equated with one another.

I think its just the Brits screaming, they know all they have to do is take a short trip to Northern Ireland and get any weapon of choice they want. Also its not like you cant just go out and get a big knife like the guy in China did. If you want to do something horrific like this, gun control laws arent going to stop you, they are just going to make it a bit more difficult, and change the weapon of choice. Remember Tim McVeigh killed 168 with fertilizer and fuel.

This country is huge with a lot of open spaces OP. Unlike Europe where people are packed in like sardines. A lot of small rural towns don't even have an active duty police officer. I would say it is their God given right to protect their home and land however they see fit....real police can be up to an hour away in a lot of places

Ok lets, I will take the gun side where I have the right to defend my family and personal property. The people on the other side of the wall will eventually try to climb to the gun side for protection from their police state giving them just enough shelter and food to survive.

Guns are for killing. If you own a gun you must be wanting to kill somebody. You want to kill somebody? You bad. Nobody should be allowed to own a gun.

Really, with all the guns owned by law-abiding American citizens and you focus upon the crimes committed by criminals, gang members and those with mental illness. Further Finland is deep into socialism, much of your will and integrity has been eroded, and you plod along through life according to the status quo not very enriching.

One cannot base crime rates strictly by numbers as there is a huge population difference and percentage per capita is a better indicator.

Granted you are a highly regulated and controlled country that has few gun crimes however please explain why your assault statistics are higher than in America along with your rape statistics.

However, the most telling is your high suicide rates perhaps your spirits are impeded by so much government regulation.
