East and West coast of U.S. hit by near simultaneous winter storms

Posted on December 17, 2012

December17, 2012 – SEATTLE – Up to 12 inches of further snowfall is forecast for parts of northern New England – and a second wintry storm is crossing the U.S. in its wake, according to Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth. The current snowfall in northern New York state and New England will continue through Tuesday night and into Wednesday, with as much as 15 inches possible in some areas. Meanwhile, another cross-country storm – Winter Storm Draco – was expected to bring heavy snow to the Northwest on Monday. The higher elevations of the Cascades will see as much as 2 to 3 feet of snow above 7000 ft, Weather.com reported, with significant accumulations below 3000 ft. The National Weather Service said the probability of “large amounts of snow remains high across the majority of windward facing slopes of the Pacific Northwest and portions of the Northern Rockies.” King5.com reported that the storm is expected to bring high winds to Western Washington and whiteout conditions to the west slopes of the Cascades and passes. The system is expected to move to the Southwest and Rockies Tuesday and Wednesday before bringing snow to the eastern half of the country later Wednesday through Friday. Roth added there would likely be a lake-effect snow threat behind the storm on Thursday and Friday. -NBC [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Winter Storms Aim For Northwest, Northeast
UPDATED 6:15 AM PST, December 17, 2012
UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Andrew Rosenthal

A few days before the winter solstice, winter has arrived in a big way across the Northwest and Northeast. Two different storms are bringing the threat for snow, ice, rain and wind that could hamper travel and cause power outages.
A Pacific storm is slamming into the Northwest today, spreading heavy snow to the Cascades and Olympics and rain to the valleys. A combination of increasing southwest winds and heavy snow will create blizzard conditions through the Cascades and Olympics where Blizzard Warnings have been posted.
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories have been issued in the Sierra, eastern Cascades and northern Rockies, where as much as 1 to 3 feet are possible through Tuesday. Chain requirements and travel delays are likely, especially along Interstates 80, 84 and 90.
Meanwhile, lower elevations are receiving a bit of rain. One to two inches of soaking downpours in Seattle and Portland, Ore., will combine with 35 to 50 mph winds to create a raw and stormy day. High Wind Watches and Warnings have been posted in western Washington and Oregon, including Seattle and Portland, Ore., as well as the northern Rockies of Montana and Wyoming.
Snow is already brushing the Wasatch and is spreading into the central Rockies. Winter Storm Watches and Warnings have also been posted across western Colorado and northern Utah, where up to 3 feet of snow are possible on the west-facing slopes above 9,000 feet.
This storm is already packing quite a punch. Yakima, Wash., has 6 inches of snow since Saturday morning, while Sims, Calif., has received 8 inches. Cape Disappointment, Wash., has seen 84 mph gusts, while Marys Peak, Ore., tipped the scales with a 101 mph gust.
Not to be outdone, the Northeast is getting a taste of winter this morning. A low pressure moving through the Great Lakes is spreading some wintry precipitation into upstate New York and New England.
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from upstate New York into Maine, mainly west of the populated Interstate 95 corridor. Five to 9 inches of snow are possible in western Maine and northern New Hampshire with up to 6 inches farther south into Vermont and upstate New York.
A bit of sleet and freezing rain will fall across parts of Massachusetts and northern Connecticut this morning. Although ice accumulations will be a tenth of an inch or less before warmer air arrives to melt it, the ice will make for a slick start to the work week in Hartford, Conn., and Springfield and Worcester, Mass. Here, Winter Weather Advisories and Freezing Rain Advisories are in place.

Re: Northwest Pac High Winds and Snow Allert!!! TORNADO ON THE GROWND IN FLORIDA!!!
Did you catch the comments on a thread a few weeks back about how the 'named' storms are exempt from insurance claims?

And that is why they are named? There are so many severely damaging storms now that they are using this tactic to keep insurance claims from crippling the companies.

Anyone got follow up on that info?

All the weather shills got all hot and bothered becaue their last forecast of severe was a miserable failure.

I wish you would let NOAA do their job and stop trying to scare people.
