Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2122560 The responsibility lies entirely with the parents. As for why they don't ban them, maybe you should take a moment to look at this. Thread: To those calling for the banning of violent games Please go slowly, as it may require more brain cells than you are used to activating in the course of a normal day. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30141054 Most young men his age do. But guess what? 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999% of them don't flip out and go on a spree kill. Stop looking for a scapegoat and accept that this young man had serious mental issues and trying to paint videogames as some kind of trigger is retarded in a world where the nightly news routinely shows more real life violence and death than every video game combined. People are looking for a "reason" well here's your reason... he was batshit crazy. The problem is not videogames or violent movies, easy access to guns or anything else, the problem is YOUR society allows people with serious mental issues to go ignored until they crack and crack they will without the help of violent games or any other external trigger. Day after day of isolation and alienation is the reason this kid cracked. How many times has this happened in the US in the last year alone? How many times in other nations in the past year? Violent videogames are played in every country IN THE WORLD... Many of which have plenty of guns lying around in citizens homes. Kids in Switzerland play violent videogames too... almost every home has guns... how many spree killings happened there in the last year? It is America that consistently has such a horrifically high rate of these incidents so whatever is causing this, it sure as fuck isn't videogames. ^^^^^^ This is a smart man (or woman). |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 26976120 Hong Kong 12/17/2012 01:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No it is a stupid and meaningless point pushed on the world from the world of undercover gun-nuts looking to obfuscate an issue enough that the real issues are not discussed. Japan has just as many violent video games, and so does Korea, and here in Hong Kong, they also in Japan have extremely violent cinema and all manner of violent entertainment. They have no where near as many homicides, and not even remotely near as many mass killings, and almost zero gun crime. The video game theory is an absolute farce. If anything, its the ugly and zealous CULTURE you have allowed to grow in the United States unabated due to the many ideologues you have running your country. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2122560 they dont ban them because gov cannot effectively replace parents parents usually have to feel confident that there children can distinguish between fiction and real life before they let them be entertained by it |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 22411639 United States 12/17/2012 01:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Adam Lanza read books too, perhaps those should be banned as well... Quoting: Saddletramp I hear he watched violent movies on occasion, perhaps those should be banned as well... Perhaps he engaged in masturbation, perhaps that should be banned as well... Perhaps he ate cheerios, perhaps that should be banned as well... etc, etc, etc, etc, etc... :hitler: So you're telling me that if a kid spends severl thousand hours playing violent video games it has no effect on him? Just as if a kid spends thousands of hours playing basketball, his muscles and reflexes don't respond? You don't think that "killing" tens of thousands of thousands of "people" onscreen doesn't condition the mind to see people as targets? You don't think that the U.S. military, in its firearms training, switched from bullseyes to silhouettes of real humanlike figures because it helps soldiers get used to the idea of shooting real people who have been turned into targets?? Come on, man. I know from your posts that you are smarter than this. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 22411639 United States 12/17/2012 02:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Millions and millions like violent video games. Typical media blaming everything but the most likely reasons. I've spent hours and hours heads hotting bad guys in video games, as have loads of people I know. It doesn't make you a violent person. Quoting: Master X Just taking a wild guess here...he was on multiple mind altering/brain-distorting LEGAL pharmaceutical drugs? Anyone? Most probably. That AND thousands of hours of video games will fuck you up right well. Both are at issue here. |

If anything, its the ugly and zealous CULTURE you have allowed to grow in the United States unabated due to the many ideologues you have running your country. Points taken. I think also because of the restrictions of space in Asia, gamers there are more accustomed to "going inner" and leaving fantasy where fantasy should be. In America, not so much. There is something about the inner/outer tension in Americans that drives us to violence at times, I think. It's largely cultural, what we're seeing. But Americans don't want to examine our culture; instead, we want to blame one (guns) or two (video games) or three (anti-depressive medication) elements of it. |
