Men, it has been well said, Think in Herds; it will be seen that they go Mad in Herds
"We find that whole communities suddenly fix their minds upon one object, and go mad in its pursuit; that millions of people become simultaneously impressed with one new delusion, and run after it, till their attention is caught by some new folly more captivating than the first.
…Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one."

-– Charles Mackay, Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, 1852

..... Thought is difficult and painful. The difficulties and pain are due to confusion. From time to time, with enormous intellectual effect, someone creates a little order - a small spot of light in the dark sea of confusion. At first we are all dazzled by the light because we are used to living in the darkness. But when we regain our senses and examine the light we find it comes from a farthing candle - the candle of common sense. To change the metaphor, the sages chase their own tails through the ages. A little child says 'Gentlemen, you are chasing your own tails.' The sages gradually lose their angular momentum, and, glancing over their shoulders, see what they are pursuing. But most of them cannot believe what they see, and the tail chasing does not die out until a generation has passed.....

That's a scary thought. Especially in today's world where internet has everyone connected with everyone else.

It's not so bad thinking outside the herd, after all:)

I worked at a large company some years back and I could see this as plain as day how the masses move in concert whether in motion or in thought. I used to say that "you people all think with one mind set...but I don't" You are all like a herd of elephants that just stampede. Guess where that got me?

When being able to see outside the box, it does seem like everyone runs on automaton. Thinking the same thoughts, repeating the same actions...over and over and over. Disrupt that repeating flow, and they get all out of sorts.

Re: Men, it has been well said, Think in Herds; it will be seen that they go Mad in Herds
This is a truth. I call it the herd mentality. People shop in droves. Also they are beholden to do things at certain times or within a limit of time, further driving that herd mentality. This is why you will see people all come up to a counter at the same time. This is also why when there is an item of interest-say with a limit on the amount can be sold-you will see all sense leave the herd as they stampede to be the first person to the item. They may not even really want the item, or not necessarily need the item, but because everyone is trying to get the item they feel they need to have it.

You will find this truth in trends too and it has a lot to do with conformity and fear. People are afraid to be different. They feel a strong need to conform in order to feel love. If they just embraced who they are, no matter how strange or different, they would have love, always.

The astronomer Fred Hoyle once wrote of the herd mentality in his profession:

“The trouble with conformity is that the process has strong positive feedback. The baaing starts up at a volume low enough to permit stronger-minded animals to think for themselves without too much trouble. Progressively, however, we break down one-by-one, losing all power of sensible judgement, to the point where we can do nothing but add our own baaing to the uproar, which eventually rises to such monumental proportions that nothing remains for the flock except the butcher's shop.”

Hi SS! I'm glad you are still around posting:) I've missed your threads.

And yes, fear is a choice, but it is also a disease. It spreads so easily. Just when I think I've mastered it, I realize that it is still there at some level.

I think what is needed is to step back and put everything into a greater perspective.

Re: Men, it has been well said, Think in Herds; it will be seen that they go Mad in Herds
I learned about the 'lowest common denominator' factor years ago during my psychic training. Basically, the group cannot evolve beyond the lowest common denominator of the group. I explain it this way:

We've all been stuck in traffic. Well, the road and direction you are going with hundreds of others is moving along nicely until...a little old lady gets on the road and drives 10 miles an hour slower than the rest of the traffic. Now EVERYONE slows down. Get it?

How to avoid this 'collective bog-down?' Think for yourself. Do not engage your belief systems with that of the dominant paradigm. Find your own truth. Have the courage to be fully honest with yourself...you CANNOT be honest in the world unless you are first and foremost self-aware enough to be honest with YOURSELF.

What is the dominant paradigm?

Lies, war, death, fear, CONTROL. Shake it off.

NOW is time for us to be fully aware that the choices we make are as simple as FEAR or LOVE, and to carry that awareness into moment to moment decision making processes that influence our response to events in the moment, how we perceive them, etc.

It is not a new-age bullshit trip...it is very simple free will practition. It can be applied to anger and 'negative' emotions without suppressing those emotions in an unhealthy way. Feelings arise...it is how WE CHOOSE to respond to them that is our gift of free will.

No lasting change is ever wrought from without.

These days we find a few individuals from every community who begin to suspect that there might be something beyond your culture's understanding of reality. When this occurs, we have a breakthrough. A beachhead. These, we can and do reach. Generally, it is then only a short time before these first-to-awaken translate their new awareness into terms better suited than ours to convey it to others locked within their particular brand of illusion, thereby helping them to awaken also.

I must say here that while i fully applaud the growing awareness and desire for change that many are expressing and attempting to manifest, the new-age movement, religion, any group-think you engage in (and that applies to governments, politics, etc.) is going to slow down your spiritual evolution. Think about it. Anyone with half a brain can see that the Pope, Vatican, et al are absolutely evil...and yet, Christianity is a dominant paradigm....how do you compromise being a part of something you know to be a lie, and to be evil? It doesn't matter if you are aware of the darkness inherent in the Vatican, for example, if you are still calling yourself a christian or subscribing to that belief system, you are a part of it, the GROUP agreement based off the common denominator, FEAR, that the 'church' perpetrates. It will always be one step forward two steps back until you learn that you do not need to be a part of a religion to be a good, decent human being, and act accordingly. ANY belief system that functions with FEAR as its base energy is going to perpetrate nothing but fear, and spiritual evolution will go backwards, not forward into enlightenment.

So really, I am just reiterating what we're both saying, it seems like a simple concept to us but to most, it's revolutionary and to most of the most, revolutionary means THREATENING, and in a dominant paradigm of FEAR, the cycle of control and manipulation thrives.

I do hope that the awareness is accelerated, however, i have been thinking of this a lot recently, kind of coming to some conclusions on subjects i have studied in my lifetime: The food you eat, the vote your dollar makes, the awareness of how YOU in every moment create your reality, is not something any external being or force is going to revelate to you. ENLIGHTENMENT IS CONSCIOUSNESS WORK!!!!!

In a nutshell: all things we do in our day to day lives, from the food we eat, the stores we shop at, the basis of the actions we take, everything makes a difference. It is fallacy to think we can just magically have all our cruelties, misdeeds and actions 'erased' by a sunday morning confession, for example.

Enlightenment is SIMPLE. It really really is. :)
