Although it's not a cure for this sickness, I do think if your society insists on having guns all over the place, you should at least have a mandatory "firearm education" class in all schools.

At least it would be a small step towards fostering a good mindset towards these tools, tbh it would pretty much be the most awesome class ever no? I certainly wouldn't be ditching class on a monday morning if first period was out on the range for marksmanship and maintenance 101.

As tragic as this is, I don't want this to be the new temperance movement. I'm a strong believer in the 2nd amendment very comfortable with handguns and long rifles- But as a single mom, I got rid of my guns and settled on pepper spray, a big dog and a baseball bat for protection until my healthy, curious kids were out of the house. But that was my way of taking personal responsibility.

Adam Lanza's mother was so determined to work through her kid's issues she couldn't be objective. I'm not a blame the parent type but totally misguided. Letting him play violent video games, taking him to gun ranges and driving? Great stimuli for a troubled kid! How would a mental health professional involved and actively monitoring a kid allow this? And weapons in that household? Prohibited!! Yes the mother would lose her right to own guns, but it would be her choice. You want custody of a mentally ill loved one- You lose your guns.

If someone can't socially/mentally function or is prone to violence there should be involvement by an impartial party. Leave this to professionals to asses, rather than a parent hoping for the best. Remove the guilt family members go through not wanting to give up on their mentally ill loved ones.

This country is so worried about stigmatizing any group they won't develop a policy to address the mentally ill. We can't go back to institutionalization like before the 1970's, but look at how we've handled the mentally ill since then? Most of the homeless are either MI or substance abusers. Look at the VA Tech shooter. Because he was an adult the college and the parents weren't made aware of his condition.
