our sun orbits another sun (Alcyone) which orbits another sun (Sirius) which orbits the Great Central Sun -
and on 12/21/12 earth and the moon line up with ALL THREE SUNS for the first time EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
What does this mean?
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29310915 It means you don't have a clue what you are talking about.
Alcyone is a star in the Pleiades, and is about 400 light years away - whereas Sirius is only about 8½ light years away.
There are 6 stars nearer to us than Sirius, and literally thousands, of stars nearer to us than Alcyone.
So the idea that we are orbiting a star 400ly away, which is in turn, orbiting a star only 8½ly away, is just plain loony-tunes. Especially when you consider those thousands of other stars which are closer to us than Alcyone.
An alignment of those 3 stars, would mean that Sirius and Alcyone would have to appear right beside each other in the sky, from our viewpoint....
The proper motions of both stars are known, to a good degree of accuracy - For Alcyone it is only a tiny fraction of an arcsecond per year, and for Sirius... only about 1½ arcsec per year.
They are both in their usual positions tonight (I saw them both, only a couple of hrs ago) How the heck do you propose they will traverse the 60º between them, in only 3 days?
21-12-2012 will come and go - No planetary doom.
After that, will you 2012 doom-sayers please STFU ?
