have not read through the thread, but with the markings you described and the crystal layer seen in the photo, it might be a form of sunstone. Sunstone were used by vikings for navigation on cloudy days. By holding the crystal to the sky the ultraviolent rays of the sun would cause the crystals to gleam. The rune would provide direction N,E,S,W.
