Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25374084 The wish for their people to only be "spoken to" by their leaders, while their slaves shut up. Is U.S. the same? They're not paranoid, they are trying to maintain social order. There has been panic buying recently in a couple of provinces - this sort of behaviour causes bigger problems as it can mean ordinary folk who don't give a rat's arse suffer when shops run bare because of irrational herd mentality of others. |

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to limit purchases per buyer? Where's the need to arrest people for freely speaking of their thoughts and fears? I just think the arrests are slave herding. |

You have no idea what it takes to keep a billion people relatively happy - and having people running round inciting panic buying is not a good start. These people were printing pamplets, inciting people to horde and panic buy: there's alot of uneducated, susceptible people in China who would believe this stuff - the government let these people say what they want up to a point, but start putting their foot down when it becomes a social problem, like now. There are thousands of churcehs, thousands of mosques, thousands of temples...make that tens or hundreds of thousands across China in total...and they preach freely, daily. There are millions of christians in China, millions of muzzies etc. But when some group starts inciting panic behaviour which can endanger or infringe on the freedom of others, it makes sense to nip it in the bud. |

Plus if it is true if that guy who attacked the children was motivated by these end of days rumors, there would actually be a backlash on the govt if they stood idly by letting these people whip others into a frenzy. What happens if someone else did something irrational like kill kids, having read all this crap from these particular people? Wouldn't go down too well. |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 30223491 12/18/2012 07:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | And one more point is, what the group is/was saying now has more publicity than they could have hoped for, given it is widely reported across China and the world. So it is not the information the govt is worried about, it is the irrational, panic behaviour they were trying to incite. It's happened before in China, in fact happens all round the world, but in China, you really don't want half a billion people whipped into a herd mentality that feeds upon itself because people will feel like they will miss out on supplies unless they don't join in. |

It would also scare anyone who may have educated information from stepping forward in advance of anything possibly harmful to the masses. They would be afraid of being arrested for speaking out of order with those who didn't want to share such information. Just a thought. |

But in reality were there strong grounds of truth hard to refute, there wouldn't be a problem - believe it or not the government doesn't have an agenda to harm people, it just wants to maintain stability. A tall order with 1.3 billion people, so in this instance arresting these people could be a good thing. The implications for not doing so could potentially be far worse. That's the trade off. |
