If we're ever going to have any kind of rational discussion about this, we need to all be on the same page on what we're actually talking about. If you insist on being part of these threads about gun control, at least educate yourself first so you don't look like a complete idiot.

For those who continue to show their ignorance on this subject, PLEASE watch the video. It's not that long and you might actually learn something that will help you in your cause.

Or continue to be ignorant, continue to use the wrong words, continue to be scared, and continue to fail because you refuse to educate yourself.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1055574

Ok, I watched the vid, it didn't change my mind.

The problem with guns is that they are often used on innocents, be it a curious kid that accidentally shoots themselves or other playmates, or used on a spouse during an argument or taken by a mentally unstable person and used on others.

The number of times it is actually used to prevent a crime is so minimal it's a joke.

Keep on selling the idea of gun culture to yourselves, just keep the handguns on your side of the border.

We are done with the problems that the smuggling of illegal weapons from the US is causing us.

While it's true that guns don't kill people, people kill other people using guns and it's much easier to commit mass murder using a gun than a baseball bat or other weapon.

LOL @ those saying we need assault rifles to protect us from law enforcement. If law enforcement ever came to your house, you wouldn't do anything. If you happened to shoot and kill an officer, you would get the death penalty.

I don't know what you morons think. I lmao imagining you guys fantasize about going on the run with your guns, like some movie character! HAHAHAHAH
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27644686

It's a straw man. Lawful gun owners have no intention of attacking police.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30227474

No shit.
I was referring to the recent case where an off-duty cop broke into a person's house with the intention of robbing them.
Murder is not okay, protecting yourself from people with unknown motives is.
 Quoting: jadksn 9544901

Of course. A person breaking into your home is a violent criminal, and should be dealt with as such.

Which happens daily in the US, and lawful gun owners act appropriately.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30227474

I don't want anyone to misconstrue what I said as a call to attack police officers. I'm just saying, these things do happen. A cop snuck in through someones doggy-door with the intent of robbing her...
If firearms are banned altogether, you can see this happening on a larger scale.

No, actually it happens daily across the US, many times over.

If smuggling is done across your border, that's a Canadian issue for them to deal with. Entirely your problem.

If you don't wish to own a firearm, simple solution; don't buy one.

But your opinions are irrelevant to American law.

These people make me sick.

Nazi Germany replay. They will be disarming us and rounding up the mentally ill soon...real soon.

These pukes are calling for the warehousing of the mentally ill even though it was shown to be a complete and utter failure in the past...even though there are millions of mentally ill that are completely non-violent.

These pukes fail to acknowledge that the mentally ill shooters in these past few cases have been the children of the elite so obviously treatment availability is not the problem. These crazy assholes have every treatment option available to them...

Maybe that is the root of the problem but big pharma will never let that debate see the light of day.

God help us all.

I don't think its nearly that simple. For one thing congress does prohibit the sale of high-powered laser pointers that can easily blind/dazzle pilots and drivers.

Also I don't fear the police or law enforcement, or the military, they are on my side as far as I'm concerned. They want to help maintain order in potentially chaotic situations.

My concern is that I live in a rural area and it takes the sheriff 30 minutes on a good day to get into town. If something goes down your pretty much on your own anyway. Now if they are busy, or the weather is bad, or there is a disaster or something, it could be more like hours or days before anyone could come and help.

I can only imagine that its much, much worse in an inner city where the cops might not even want to go into your neighborhood. What are regular law abiding people supposed to do when someone is attacking their home and help is hours away?

In a situation with-out rule of law, I have allot of faith that riots or similar madness simply could not happen in my area. Due to the fact that responsible MEN with GUNS would come out of their houses and simply NOT allow mob rule or chaos. The fact that I live in a place where pretty much everyone is armed is comforting to me. I feel like I could yell for help, and someone with a gun would come running, and that is exactly the kind of environment I would want my kids growing up in.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6543219

Watch the video, but I will reiterate anyway,

A hunting rifle, is single shot or semi-auto, and generally has a small magazine capacity.

An assault-rifle is a military arm used for 'assault' ie attacking a position, shooting on the move, suppression-fire, and generally speaking multiple operators attacking at once from two or three angles.

Assault-rifles are select fire, meaning they can fire, semi-auto, or full-auto, (or burst). This is important because it allows for the use of tactics such as suppression-fire needed for maneuvering, in squad-level tactical combat. Full-auto is not often useful for an individual combatant, however when used by co-operating fire-teams, full-auto fire is vitally important for giving your mates time to get into position.

This is the important distinction, full-auto is useless for hunting, and necessary for combat.

As others have pointed out assault rifles are already illegal. There have been some instances where criminals have used full-auto weapons against police with devastating effect, like the north-Hollywood shoot out.

The fact is that an assault rifle ban will do nothing to stop criminals from getting full auto weapons if they want them, they're already illegal.

All a criminal has to do is get an SKS, maybe 100$, this can be easily modified to take AK mags, and shoot full-auto. No amount of legislature can change this because the steel and the know-how is already on the streets.

Here's the deal guys, I love guns but he is absolutely right. Just look up the definition of assault and tell me an AK-47 or AR-15 is for home defense. The simple fact that 100 round magazines are sold to regular civilians is mind boggling. Soldiers carry these weapons because they are made to hit with devastating force from a long distance. If assault rifles are allowed to stay in the hands of IRRESPONSIBLE gun owners who do not keep them locked up, the only answer to keeping us safe is to place soldiers or National Guards in public places with live ammunition. Face the facts, if you are a concealed carry holder and you come face to face with a gun man carrying an Assualt Rifle chances are you will not survive unless you are a great marksman. So do most of you think you should be allowed to sling your Assault-Rifle over your shoulder and go to the mall just to "protect" yourself?. Most of these guys have also worn body armor so good luck with that. Look up a video clip of the bank shoot out in LA with the two guys armed with assault rifles, It is miraculous that no one was killed that day other than the assailants. Assault Rifles, Body Armor, and improved magazines should not be sold to the general population plain and simple.

Re: Bill O'Reilly : "Nobody Needs An Assault Rifle"
Very well done. The media has been misusing the word assault rifle and getting away with this for years.

This guy is as far right as you can get and he is saying this! Things are changing in this country, that's for sure.

Get ready folks, they're coming for your guns!

Exactly what is an "assault rifle" vs. a hunting rifle?
