Re: Bill O'Reilly : "Nobody Needs An Assault Rifle"
Here's the deal guys, I love guns but he is absolutely right. Just look up the definition of assault and tell me an AK-47 or AR-15 is for home defense. The simple fact that 100 round magazines are sold to regular civilians is mind boggling. Soldiers carry these weapons because they are made to hit with devastating force from a long distance. If assault rifles are allowed to stay in the hands of IRRESPONSIBLE gun owners who do not keep them locked up, the only answer to keeping us safe is to place soldiers or National Guards in public places with live ammunition. Face the facts, if you are a concealed carry holder and you come face to face with a gun man carrying an Assualt Rifle chances are you will not survive unless you are a great marksman. So do most of you think you should be allowed to sling your Assault-Rifle over your shoulder and go to the mall just to "protect" yourself?. Most of these guys have also worn body armor so good luck with that. Look up a video clip of the bank shoot out in LA with the two guys armed with assault rifles, It is miraculous that no one was killed that day other than the assailants. Assault Rifles, Body Armor, and improved magazines should not be sold to the general population plain and simple.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4135612

Just a point; the police in that shootout had to actually go to a nearby civilian gun store to get Ar-15's, to even up their chances of bringing the bank robbers down.

SWAT was too far away at the time. They eventually got there, but the problem with SWAT is that they usually are not on the scene when the shit goes down.

Same for the sniper in the Texas tower in the 60's(?). The locals had hunting rifles and were firing back at the shooter; the cops handguns were useless in that situation.

Re: Bill O'Reilly : "Nobody Needs An Assault Rifle"
It was the second amendment. This amendment is on the top of the list of our bill of rights. It is about the citizen, the common man, to have enough fire power to fight the government if need be. It is not about hunting or having a little gun that could not help the citizen fight . The founding fathers took up state of the art weaponry and kicked England's ass. If you want gun control, go to England and live. They still don't have guns over there.
 Quoting: Black Diamond 30102670

The second Amendment is about protection from the government or an invading hostile foreign force. The fact that the government feels threatened enough to start the full court press to eliminate weapons that have some limited fire power says it all.

I wonder if they got permission from the governor to circumvent the waiting period, Oh wait, that's only for hand-guns, my bad.

There was also recently that situation in texas where a civilian basically saved a cop during an ambush. The civilian by-stander made some incredible shots with I believe a .357 from 100+ yards away. But still, in almost every case where a regular citizen needs a gun its only a few shots.

I still think high-capacity magazines should be allowed for regular civilians, especially in the their homes. A high-capacity magazine would allow a single mother to defend her children against a mob of people. Flash-riot/mob type violence is a very real thing, and in that case 6-10 rounds simply wont cut it. If the cops cant/wont help you and there is a mob of people trying to hurt you or your family what else are you going to do?

The 2nd amendment has become an anachronism since there is of course no way that any populace can defend against a modern military and anyone who claims differently is just playing games.

Given the number of criminals in our society, the 2nd needs to be 'amended' to state clearly that our right to bear reasonable arms is for purposes of self defense against criminals period.

If we're ever going to have any kind of rational discussion about this, we need to all be on the same page on what we're actually talking about. If you insist on being part of these threads about gun control, at least educate yourself first so you don't look like a complete idiot.

For those who continue to show their ignorance on this subject, PLEASE watch the video. It's not that long and you might actually learn something that will help you in your cause.

Or continue to be ignorant, continue to use the wrong words, continue to be scared, and continue to fail because you refuse to educate yourself.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1055574

Ok, I watched the vid, it didn't change my mind.

The problem with guns is that they are often used on innocents, be it a curious kid that accidentally shoots themselves or other playmates, or used on a spouse during an argument or taken by a mentally unstable person and used on others.

The number of times it is actually used to prevent a crime is so minimal it's a joke.

Keep on selling the idea of gun culture to yourselves, just keep the handguns on your side of the border.

We are done with the problems that the smuggling of illegal weapons from the US is causing us.

While it's true that guns don't kill people, people kill other people using guns and it's much easier to commit mass murder using a gun than a baseball bat or other weapon.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 628775

Not really, go to your local hardware store and buy a chainsaw, they are very dangerous. The simple fact is there are some deranged individuals in this world and there are many things they can get there's hands on to commit mass murder. Now I do agree with some of your statements and I personally think military grade weaponry or body armor should not be sold to civilians. But I know of many crimes that have been thwarted by firearms. What we need is severe punishment for irresponsible gun users and people who commit crimes with guns. If you leave your handgun out or your shotgun or your rifle and a child or unstable person gains access to it and murders someone you should be charged with murder plain and simple. It is no different than leaving a hand grenade in your living room with a child and telling the not to pull the pin.

You clearly don't understand the difference between positive rights and negative rights.

Gun ownership is an extension of property rights, and property rights are a negative right. Because for you or anyone else to honor my right to own guns and other property, all you must do is NOTHING. Negative rights don't impose any onus on anyone but the actor employing his or her rights.

Free speech is similarly a negative right. In that one can say anything he wants to, and for everyone else to honor that right it means NOT attacking them for their beliefs or statements.

Health care would be a positive right, because for this right to be honored, doctors MUST provide medical care to those who need it, even if they cant afford it, or don't want it.

This is an important distinction. All you need to do to honor my rights, is to stay the fuck out of my way.

Well its important in the analysis of the impact on society, health-care costs money, its a service that businesses provide to customers. I don't believe that government should be the position of telling businesses that they MUST provide FREE services to anyone. Peoples lives are NOT at stake here.

Hospitals already provide huge amounts of free coverage to people who come in almost dying from retarded emergencies, like exploding meth labs. There is a hospital in Tennessee that provides 300 million dollars per year worth of free care to people who have burned them selves with kitchen meth labs. This cost is ultimately passed on the people who DO pay. I don't want my tax dollars going to help people who set them selves on fire cooking meth, simple as that. It's not the hospitals fault that they cant help everyone. Just like its not general mills fault that people are starving. After all general mills could save those people by sending them cheerios, but that's how they make their money.

And once again, the WRONG terminology is used. An "Assault RIFLE" is a weapon capable of automatic fire. Those weapons are already heavily regulated. Additionally, rifles capable of automatic fire have not been used in these mass killings.

Once people actually start talking with the SAME TERMS, maybe we'll be able to move forward. As long as people insist on being willfully ignorant of what they're talking about, they will be dismissed as the kneejerk reactionaries they are.

Educate yourself first, then try to change peoples' minds.

Give up forks and spoons, cooking with gas and driving a car and THEN I would encourage people to consider giving up their assault rifles. NOTE: I own no guns but am smart enough to know that whatever weapons our government has in their possession we should be allowed them to. OF COURSE, this is the same damn country that feels the need to stock pile nukes like they're going out of style while demanding everyone else [besides Israel] have none.
