Most impressive thing I've seen in a long time.

If you truly have arachnophobia you should know no matter where you travel their is always a spider within 6 ft away. Its incredible we don't think we have any around us cause we don't see them but when you go looking in dark place or even tiny places they exist.

We are all in the process of doing things we never could do before.

uhh if the Spider was born from another spider identical to it, why is it so surprising it knows what it, or its parent looked like?

The abilities for chimps, dolphins and other intelligent animals to understand their mirror image comes from their intelligence, not from their self awareness.

This ability only means that some animals have the type of intelligence which can help them find out that their image can be some place else other than within themselves.

I think this is the first time an insect is discovered to have this ability, and not only that but replicate it.

I wonder if spiders know that they are creepy and disgusting.

Clever little spider.

They are.

I never kill spiders that I occasionally find in my gaff.

I carefully collect them in a glass, with a bit of cardboard underneath, and ease them out the window!

Could it be by chance, one spider is born with the genetically-encoded tendency to create a tight cluster at the center of the web that is unusually visible. It and its offspring have a slight survival advantage, perhaps from birds being able to see and avoid the web more easily (it's known that some spiders benefit from this), or from other spiders thinking from afar that the web is occupied by a larger spider and avoiding it etc. This will result in more offspring and statistically the gene will prosper.

Over the course of thousands of generations, larger circles are selected for, and then chance throws up some new 'designs' that include surrounding strands that start to make the thing look somewhat more spider-like. More time refines this shape. (This assumes that the central 'design' looking spider-look confers reproductive advantage.)

Spiders have 8 eyes. So this little one has been inspecting its body in all angles. Maybe it has eaten some mushrooms, or a amanita muscaria fly, and gained inner vision of self. Truly amazing!

That is amazing.

Absolutely, here in the summer I place them outside on my porch and they really help to keep the mosquito/fly population down around that area.

i do not see any use for the hunt, as a bigger decoy of itself probably doesnt attract more prey...
it could be for display in mating game, for protection purposes or it even could be art.

noone knows, if they are really building sculptures of themselves...
maybe they build their mother, maybe its just art...

however, very fascinating
