Ballin on Your Tax Dollars User ID: 9927807 United States 12/18/2012 01:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That is freaking cool A spider that builds elaborate, fake spiders and hangs them in its web has been discovered in the Peruvian Amazon. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17165455 Believed to be a new species in the genus Cyclosa, the arachnid crafts the larger spider from leaves, debris and dead insects. Though Cyclosa includes other sculpting arachnids, this is the first one observed to build a replica with multiple, spidery legs. Anonymous Coward User ID: 25368284 United States 12/18/2012 02:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What is interesting is that the spider used bits of twig wrapped in silk webbing for the legs. That is the use of tools in order to protect itself, that's a higher level of intelligence. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26789708 Isn't it funny, most people think animals and insects are dumb- as if we are the most intelligent species there is. Yet we don't know crap about nature like these creatures do, that is the irony of it. |

American orb weavers as well that form groups of 4-6 female spiders to build and maintain the most gorgeous webs one could lay eyes upon. Anonymous Coward User ID: 27180401 Canada 12/18/2012 03:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was thinking of my comment and among some of the possibilities the most obvious ones being that it learned it's own likeness from observing either parent, siblings, or perhaps seeing other spiders of it's kind in their webs because they probably wouldn't live completely isolated form their own kind. Although once they evolved and natural selection enabled the best decoy builders to thrive and the bad artists to perish, it may have become ingrained in the genetics and be more of a natural inherited instinct. Need a controled experiment to eliminate certain factors, like raising one in isolation so it doesn't see itself or it's own kind, to see if it can make the sculpture anyway naturally or it is a learned skill from some sort of imitation instinct. And then teach it to survive in natural habitat and set it free after of course. Becuase if it is lerning it`s image from the spiders around it, like making a picture of it`s neighbour in a web, then it isnt really building a decoy of itself at all, it`s making a sculpture of it`s comrade. |

Abi ~ User ID: 25045778 United States 12/18/2012 03:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | o.O did you even read the article? its a new species of the genus Cyclosa. the other spiders in the genus Cyclosa do not have this ability. that is Evolution. Not to burst OP or anyone's bubble because this is really cool.. this is just in response to Chris' comment...spiders have been doing this..this particular species just took it a step further and made it more realistic..and the cyclosa's were part of the group that did this..according to 2009 article listed below.
