First of all gun rights doesn't necessarily have to be a free for all, people should demonstrate work stability, no criminal records and pass a psychological test besides being able to demonstrate skill to use the weapons to get a permit. The matter of fact is that you even agree that criminals will always find ways to harm innocents, so the only difference that gun rights make is that innocent, decent people get a chance to defend themselves from that ever present threat from lunatics instead of being totally defenseless. Only people who have something to lose should be granted legal gun ownership, the rest will surely find a way to get guns illegally anyway.
If you have more good willing, decent folks in your society/community, gun rights will mean that anytime a lunatic tries to harm someone there will be several people around to stop him/her, and if the victim is alone he/she will at least stand a chance to protect him/herself. This creates an immediate deterrent for criminals as they risk being shot at anytime when carrying out criminal activity, instead of only after people call the cops or when cops are around (and cops everywhere have become extremely worthless to begin with).
