Even if you could excuse the laughing as some spontaneous reaction to something someone said, it does seem like he was trying to work himself back into appearing sad.

Ignore the laughing for a moment: there appears to be a huge and obvious delineation between him chucking at something beforehand and then - this is key - getting back into a seemingly contrived grief mode. Do you know what I mean? Even if it's genuine, it's one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen. Maybe he wasn't "trying to work himself sad," maybe he was just getting ready to talk about his dead little girl. Maybe he was actually sad. just a thought.
