I worked at a health food store during Y2K. We had a sign by the registers that said "when you realize the world did not end on 01.01.00, we will not be accepting returns of items purchased in excessive quantities."

Yeah- people here were trying to unload generators! Heh.

This is true, but 'preparation' in it's best form is a way of living, every day- always being prepared to some degree- relying on instinct, observation, awareness, experience, resourcefulness...not this manic, panic hoarding/ stockpiling because of some date on a calendar, motivated by fearmongering, especially when the 'nature' of the threat is not clear or known.
Just sayin'.

how many people do you know that have two weeks worth of food in their cupboards ? and where do they think they are going to get more, if the trucks can't run because gas is $10 a gal?

if you plan on getting through the economic crisis, you should already have a years supply of food stored ... otherwise you will find yourself chipped and working for FEMA - good luck with that

And this is the scary part. And the two weeks worth/ year's worth of food in your house doesn't do you a stick of good when your house is levelled, burnt to the ground or washed away. Ditto for the gas in the truck when there's no where to go.
How do/ can you prepare for that?

Don't keep all yer eggs in one basket. Have a plan A, plan B and plan C. Always give your friends the better part of a deal in case u need a favor down the road. Always keep your gas tank full with a spare 5 gallons in the garden shed. Drive to a state park and camp before the storm hits. They had plenty of warning to leave.....

I like what you stated here and I agree. And the part about friends- have always been discerning about the friends I keep- they know I have their backs, and they in turn have always had mine- the building of good relationships over time (and as it turns out, we each have specific useful skills that would come in handy in a variety of situations.)
As you also pointed out- camping. Good to have a relationship with nature too... never know when you might end up spending time exposed to the elements.

Not heeding warnings... well then you're forced to deal.

All the more reason when its not clear or unknown. Preparing is preparing. You need not know what for but just the simple fact you are ready for anything is a good thing. Wait and see.

Its just not about this date and point in time. Most preppers I know will just keep going and adding and getting more and more self suffienct. Its a great way to live. You know yourready for anything in a moments notice. Won't catch me running around at the last minute.

Self sufficiency. Absolutely. So many people wait for someone to save them... what they don't often realise is that 'someone' might be trying to survive, or is having to look after his own, first.
