In an interview with Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar published on Monday, Farouk al-Sharaa offered the unusually bleak public assessment of the civil war. Play Video Syria's opposition forces unifying behind one man "All these opposition forces can only conclude the battle to topple the regime if their goal is to push the country into chaos, a cycle of violence that has no end," al-Sharaa said in the interview. Limpan User ID: 1474973 Sweden 12/19/2012 08:31 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ANTAKYA, Turkey — The new Syrian rebel military commander said he is "very afraid" a cornered Syrian President Bashar Assad will unleash chemical weapons on his own people but the opposition does not have the means to seize and secure them. Gen. Salim Idris, who defected from the Syrian army in July, told The Associated Press in an interview the rebels could defeat the regime within a month if supplied with anti-aircraft weapons. Without foreign military help, he estimated it could take up to three months. Assad's troops are stretched thin and have lost ground in recent months, particularly in northwestern Syria, but have kept rebel fighters pinned down with massive air bombardments. Idris claimed that more than 120,000 armed men are fighting Assad's military, a figure difficult to confirm independently in the chaos of the civil war. |

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast reiterated Tuesday that NATO's deployment of Patriot missiles in Turkey is a "provocative" move. Mehmanparast said that any "provocative" measures like deploying Patriot missiles in Turkey-Syria border is at odds with the interests of regional countries. Such measures are the "root causes of instability and insecurity" in the region, said Mehmanparast at weekly press conference. He said that Iran has announced its position over the deployment of the air-defense system to the Turkish officials, emphasizing that the stability should be achieved by cooperation of the regional states and any measures which may led to further instability and insecurity in the region should be avoided. Also on Tuesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu stressed that the Patriot missiles to be deployed along Turkey's border with Syria are for "defense" purpose, refuting recent accusations by Iranian officials. Limpan User ID: 1474973 Sweden 12/19/2012 08:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | As President Barack Obama enters his second term, Syria has become the most urgent test of his foreign policy leadership and style. If Obama finally takes ownership of the effort to unseat Bashar al-Assad (which would not require U.S. troops or planes), there’s still a chance of preventing a Syrian implosion. If the administration leads from in front, it may be possible to head off a strategic disaster that would endanger Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Israel. Yet early signs indicate Obama will continue the muddled Syria policy of his first term, while continuing to lead from way, way behind. [link to www.postbulletin.com] |
