Are these chinese lanterns popular in North America? I can honestly say I have never seen one in flight. Yet they are often accused of being unidentifiable in flight on this board. Do people just randomly go out in the middle of po-dunk broke-ass eastern North Carolina and let these things go?

Great find :) Glad you found an article about it!

have you ever seen anything like that?

one witness said it came close enough that they could tell it was a black triangular shaped object.

I've seen one or two around here, the ones I have seen are definitely triangular, but the lights look a little different (the one I saw had multiple lights and one in the middle)...I think I sent you an image of the one I saw and got a picture of from around here. This area has some interesting activity...it does not surprise me at all! Just wish I could have seen it in person as well :) Will be keeping my eyes open for anything similar to what your friends saw!

when I lived in the NC Mts. I encountered some Paranormal Phenomena. It was scary up there on the side of the Mt. at night time.

I hear Brown Mountain's quite nice this time of year, if UFOs are your thing. I grew up in Catawba county myself, and while I have not seen them personally, my brother in law has.

New Bern actually has alot of wealthy people. Nicholas Sparks lives there, right around the corner from my parents actually.

But to answer your question, yeah I have seen chinese lanterns on several occasions. mostly at concerts and festivals though.
