I will choose to look at it this way, the ufo phenomenon is a massive can of worms to be opened. If they eventually come out and acknowledge the existence of ufos it doesn't mean they have to include all the details of what/who/why or where they originate from. So yes, we could soon get an official announcement stating they are real, but with no sustenance in determining what it all means or where they are coming from.

Are they keeping this a closely guarded secret for our own protection, for our own sanity?

Personally, i am getting very tired of lights in the sky, silly objects playing mind games in a moment of clandestine opportunity. The bulk of the phenomenon seems to be very devious in nature, very evasive and seemingly bizarre in motives.
