Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30151276 Actually you are partially wrong.. I never exercised as a young person, and ate whatever I wanted to eat, including cake, cookies and milkshakes--- and I was skinny. After getting Lyme disease and taking antibiotics for 2 years, I am now overweight. I believe that it may be due to the fact that I killed off all the good bacteria in my gut, allowing the enterobacter to grow--which downregulated my metabolism and caused fat storage, as the article says.. I walked 250 miles on the treadmill and did not lose one pound. Now I am on a very restricted diet with no rice, no bread, no sugar .. and I can barely maintain my weight at 3 pounds below the obese level for me. It would be great if the researchers could suggest ways to reduce enterobacter. |

The latter did not become obese despite being fed a high-fat diet and being prevented from exercising. Quoting: New Age Messiah The bacterium – known as enterobacter – encourages the body to make and store fat, and prevents it from being used, by deregulating the body’s metabolism-controlling genes. “This is a very important phenomenon,” said Professor Zhao Liping, who with a team at Shanghai Jiao Tong University carried out the research. “It is the last missing piece of evidence bacteria causes obesity.” [link to www.ft.com] some 10 yrs ago it was discovered that bacteria is the cause of obesity. . It took 20 yrs for the AMA and doctors to finally admit that a parasite caused ulcers which made it treatable with a double antibiotic ... it'll take another 10 before obesity will be treated with a pill...and cured. the parasites actually live IN the aglomerated fat...these bacteria affect the metabolism of the host etc... tptb don't want to cure obesity...not until they cull the masses. ..afterwards...obesity will be non-existant. You can't have worker drones being slowed down by something as curable as obesity |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30151276 I'm sure it can cause it, but TONS of people don't eat that much and get super fat. Yes... An acquaintance's wife, a nurse, has had a terrible time with weight ... and when she was fully tested at the Cleveland Clinic they found that she gained weight on a 800 calory a day food intake situation, even while doing extensive everyday work. While her situation was supposedly one of the most dramatic they had seen I understand it is overall not all that unusual in their testing. Some people just have both an extremely slow metabolism AND are super efficient in how they burn calories even when they are actively doing stuff. Whether it is genetic or a bacteria I have no idea, but something does cause some people to burn calories at a MUCH SLOWER RATE than the tables indicate. Since we are now learning that a LOT of things are caused by bacteria that were previously thought to be caused by other things (ulcers, some clogged artery issues, blood plaque etc.), I wouldn't put "bacteria" out of the realm of possibility. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 536850 12/19/2012 01:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Interesting how invested some people are in the condition of being overweight having only to do with poor habits. Why? Science is showing a bacteriological cause, one that may be active in humans and possibly something to be cured easily, and people are acting as if this has to be wrong or a lie for some reason? Could it be that if it turned out to be a disease that all those people that mocked those that couldn't lose weight will have to eat their words? Instead of it being about laziness, or sloth, it might simply be that you, the person that ridiculed others, is an asshole? Science has no great reason to lie about these findings. Especially Chinese scientists. |

Simply because I got up off my fat arse and exercised and now I eat healthy, hate to brag, but I now love myself, beats the hell out of hating yourself because you do not like the reflection in the morror. Quoting: joncon There is definitely a baseline formula, having to do with intake and energy expended, but there are variables, obviously because a lot of people don't eat nearly enough to be as fat as they are. I used to be one of those that simply judged fat people as over-eating, lazy people until i met a guy that i ended up being good friends with. This guy is 6'5" and about 420lbs. He used to weigh about 280 and could literally lift a horse. He had apendecitis and almost died...was in hospital for 2 months. When he got out...and recovered, he put on weight and could never get slim again..NEVER. He eats the same as I do, i am 6' and 200lbs in good shape. He is twice my size , yet obese, eating the same. He got something in the hospital...obviously that bacteria. true story. here is the my theory: the same bacteria that causes obesity also affects the body chemistry which also causes depression, lethargy, etc. (laziness).
