where in canada are you? you never heard of a cold snap? and -30 isn't so bad
 Quoting: Swinburnian

unless you are homeless, I have seen dead homeless people in downtown Calgary who froze overnight. Russia probably douse not have social services as good as ours mind you I know next to nothing about today's Russia and how good the social programs are there. You would think being Russia most of the housing would have excellent heating and insulation but maybe all the money is still going to the rich instead of the needy.

i once rescued someone from being frozen to death on a -32 degree night, also in Calgary. I don't know if she was homeless, but she was passed out from drinking. I'm going to guess that, except where power went out, that's the case for most of the dead in Russia, too.

Some of them will have been homeless people who weren't drunk, but most people who live on the sreets of cold cities are pretty resourceful if they're sober and not too sick. Anyhow, I agree with you, the problem in Moscow and St Petersburg isn't the temperature (or poorly insulated housing) -- it's the social conditions.

shocked Holy crap!!
 Quoting: Ollo

I take my shock back...I miscalculated when I read the article. So -14F, I would have thought that wasn't that unusual for Russia?

...not that I would want to be in weather that cold, though!
 Quoting: Ollo

are most of the posters on this thread fooken stupid??
the linked article is all in degrees......degrees are colder than Fahrenheit
-20c is a lot colder than -20f
BUT I repeat the article states all temps in DEGREES

tits
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7815861

Since they do not use the Fahrenheit scale in Russia it is safe to say they mean Celsius.

Temperature in Fahrenheit = (9/5)*(Temp in Celsius) + 32

(9/5)*(-20C) + 32 = -4F

They got used to absence of winter and now some completely unforeseen development has caused sudden and extreme unpredictable temperature gradients across the northern hemisphere. The temperature dropped 34 degrees in 1 hour here last night in East Texas accompanied by hurricane like winds that caused the electricity to go off.

Incidentally, back during the day when we wee having normal winters I lived 50 miles sw Of Montreal in extreme northeastern New York state.-30F was common, the coldest I ever saw was -46F and we had two months straight in the late 70's where the temperature never exceeded 0 F.

One winter the river in back of my house froze solid all the way to the bottom (The Raquette River) and when it finally thawed in mid June all of the fish were floating on the surface. People were riding snow machines on the ice in may and early June and there were remnants of the 20 ft+ high snow drifts along the edges of forests and fences in July..

No one even mentioned "ice age", and as i remember it as a child we simply adapted and remained active outside in the extreme cold, utilizing techniques like aluminum foil wrapped around our feet to reflect heat back in to portable hand warmers and even electric socks. Putting woolen socks over your mittens kept your hands warm when riding snow machines, and a full face coverage helmet would keep your head warm with a touk worn under it. That and many layers of clothing and -30 feels warm on a sunny wind free day, and it usually is wind free when that cold.
That ain't cold!

record temp in northern Maine is 65 below 0 back in the mid eighties. I would assume 20 to 30 below would be common place in Russia at this time of year. I personally have seen 14 days of 30 beow 0 around the 70's in Portland Maine. At that temp for that period of time the snow actually squeaks unde foot. Great fun at 20 below is to take boiling water and throw it into the air and watch it vaporize before it hits the ground due to the very low humidity at that temp.
