Terrifying Doom 1PM PST in Metro Vancouver

The Expensive NEW Port Mann 11-lane wide suspension bridge, the widest in the world, replaces the aging Original 5-lane bridge as a major upgrade to the TransCanada Highway 1 Freeway System - Tolling began only weeks ago.

Drivers described trying to dodge terrifying icicle bombs several feet long in rush hour traffic. 1 person was knocked unconscious and several others injured.

The bridge design is unique in that all the cables cross above the main deck to the massive two support towers. Apparently the engineers forgot about the occasional snowstorms that hit the NorthWest.

The RCMP has closed the bridge in both directions INDEFINITELY while engineers assess.

That's hilarious.

A buddy of ours was driving over this 'state of the art' bridge today and was horrified.

Only in Vancouver. British Columbia, The Best Place On Earth. What a joke on commuters.

It is so typical of this place.

Don't worry about regional differences. America is ten times bigger in population than we are ... therefore ... it doesn't matter unless it relates to them.

Wow. Knowing that the ice had been a problem for similar bridges and the contractor didn't see the need to address the problem in a state-of-the-art new design? Talk about not getting paid but getting sued.

Ohhhhh hell yeah! Heads will be rolling. People are PISSED. The Port Mann was FREE until now - There's already chatter that heated cables were discussed in the planning phase and dismissed as not necessary.

They absolutely will have to put heat trace on these cables now - Even if this was a freakish storm with rapid temperature changes and high winds - DUH! That's what the West Coast IS in winter. I'm so disgusted that all of the well-paid engineers failed to see something so painfully obvious or purposely overlooked it to save costs.

If I was one of the people almost stabbed to death by icicles today I'd be lawyering up - easy Class Action Lawsuit.

HAHAHAHA

So typical BC!

I used to live in the Fraser Valley and was dating my now husband in Sechelt. MANY days and nights racing to Horseshoe bay ferry terminal. Or more like crawling past Langley for 45mins just to sit still at the @#$% Surrey @#$% off ramp cause people don't know how to $%^@ing merge ffs.

Not there now, but the new bridge was supposed to be soooo fabulous. Shouldn't laugh but can't help myself. LOL

What is going on with engineers, they are making big mistakes. That bridge problem is so simple a lay person can understand, the reason to make sure the cables are protected for cold icy weather.

Building fall because of engineering getting in a hurry and not keeping safety in mind. There are to many things that aren't being engineered right, that I wonder if the universities and colleges are teaching these people right.

White knuckle ride along with this guy... Listen to his radio - He's on the bridge deck AFTER it's been closed by the police and listening to the chaos on 1040AM radio before he's safely across! The ambulance whips by to get the sunroof victim...

This guy pointed his dash cam up so you can understand just how FUCKED this bridge design is without heated cables

Why couldn't they use the old Port Mann bridge? (Its orange in the background of the first vid)

Did they dismantle it or something?

Heads Up

Are you near ANY of these bridges? - These are just SOME of the cable-stayed design bridges I found in North America that have angled overhead cables that are in places where you could get the freaky snowstorm that launches deathcicles off the cables...

And by the way this DID already happen in Boston in 2005 and they tried to sweep it under the rug like it's not a big deal

This also happened in Sweden every winter
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

They ended up wrapping the cables in electric PETD foil to zap the ice off.

AGAIN - How the hell did all the engineers of this bridge in 2012 miss such a glaring obvious inherent design flaw?
