I am really worried... need some positive thoughts
My son is on a bus to go see his dad, but I found out they are in a Blizzard in Nebraska. It was so bad they had to head back to the nearest bus station.
I am really worried now because this was supposed to be a smooth trip, but now it is anything but that. To top it all off, he forgot his money to eat on. Luckily I packed him some snacks for the trip. But that may not hold him very long.
The bus may be stranded there in Nebraska, and now I just want him back home. I just can't afford the ticket. His dad didn't spring the extra for a refundable ticket either.
Does anyone know if they can make an exception, and let him reroute his trip back home to Oklahoma instead of going all the way to Oregon?
I am so worried, he should have called me by now. He said his battery was low too. I need some positive thoughts, I am just beside myself.

Re: I am really worried... need some positive thoughts
Sending lots of positive thoughts. Not too familiar with Nebraska.. but most states that get snow like that regularly can handle it appropriately. We're in the path of part of it and while it will be messy at first, it will be cleared quickly once the storm calms down a bit. It also may not hit until he already gets there. Have you talked to the bus company to find out what will happen if they're stuck some place for a while? Knowing their procedures might give you some peace of mind.

Looks like most of the snow is moving out tonight and from Nebraska to Oregon should be ok, the buses will travel major highways that are plowed and sanded/salted frequently.

If they were headed back to the bus station then that's a good thing. Since they made it that far, they should be able to backtrack. They also have radios so they can stay in touch with dispatch. Plus, everyone has a cell phone these days. It's not like they are on a dark, lonely, deserted back road...they are probably on an interstate highway.

I am curious though, how old is your son?

Hi Skyblau. I've ridden the bus lots of times, but I don't know if they'll change a non-refundable ticket.

I DO know they have put phone charging stations in most of the bus stations and alot of the buses. I turned mine off and just checked it every couple of hours, because it had been awhile since I had taken the bus. I don't know how many of the buses have the charger ports on them, but the newer ones do have them.

Riding the bus gets a bad rap, but I've always found the employees to be helpful and friendly. The only time I've seen them get an attitude is when the passenger had one first. I DO know they keep a good eye on the kids riding alone.

Prayers sent, hon. Let us know how it works out, ok?

Because this is an unusual situation (having to head backwards to closest bus station because of the storm) honestly, it really doesn't hurt to ask the bus company, also, because this is unusual maybe they can put you through to the driver especially if they are done driving for the night and just parked waiting out the storm. Really, because of this situation I really think they would make an exception because this is a child if there is a bus headed the right direction (back to you)

He is 17, I just heard from him. He is stuck in a small town, about two hours from Omaha. He seemed to be ok. A nice lady gave him a sandwich a bit ago. He said they are plowing the roads, but the bus is pulled over waiting for another bus driver to come and take over. I don't understand that. It would make more sense to me if they continued back to Omaha.

Bus drivers are like airline pilots. They can only drive so many miles a day, that's probably why they are waiting for a new driver.

The snow is so bad in Nebraska that people are resorting to canabalism. I just heard on the scanner how a bus got attacked and the people eaten.

I sure hope so. I figured since they already are going backwards back the way he came, maybe they will make an exception for him because of the storm. It would be about a 1000 mile round trip for me if I had to go up and get him. I only have 75.00 to work with that wouldn't take care of tolls if there are any. The mileage calculator said I would need about 127.00 for gas. So that doesn't work.

I don't care how old he is, you worry if there are really unforeseen circumstances for your children.

The bus company wants to do what it promised to do: get the bus passengers to their destination.

You may want your son back home with you, and you may be right.

Perhaps he could decide not to continue his journey.

In any case, it sounds like the bus company is acting responsibly.

Poor mom! I will pray for safe traveling mercies for your son, whether he continues to Oregon or returns home.

Good luck Skyblau, glad you posted here, we want to keep you company while this situation sorts itself out.

hf Thank you! I am still waiting for him to get to Omaha. He said he wants to come back home. I don't blame him. The weather may get even worse when they eventually head back towards Oregon, because they have to go through Denver. It has been snowing alot up there. Someone asked if he was five years old, no he is seventeen. I would never let him go on a bus if he were that young. This is his first trip though, and he is anxious over it too.

It depends on the destination. It cost almost 350.00 round trip to Oregon from Oklahoma. His dad didnt by refundable tickets though, it would have saved alot of problems if he had.
