As we say in this country, fair play to him.
Something about this story just makes me smile and feel a little sad at the same time.
 Quoting: Lucky Charms

It makes me sad. I am proud that he is defending his child's school, but sad that this is yet another media event sensationalizing an incident that for the most part is remote. This event is going to end up costing many more lives if it creates additional gun laws that prevent citizens from protecting themselves...

As horrible a tragedy as this event, or other events like this were, are, or will be, the victims involved do not even make up a percentile of our total population, yet they generally end up impacting changes that have an effect on a large % of the population.

Even if we look at 9/11 and how horrible that was and how many deaths occurred - it was still just a blip in the big picture, yet look at all the changes that followed. Or... look at how many were killed in the "war on terror" that resulted.

I feel like we're largely only look at one side of the coin because its the only side we're shown.

Also, I'm not trying to discount any of the lives lost, because they are infinitely important to the families that lost them - but the media should NOT be sensationalizing that loss! The loss of a child is an absolute tragedy.

About ten years ago in a small town in the south,,a friend and i had been out hunting and just got back in the house when someone down the road called and told us that the school our kids go to was under lock down.We both had two kids there. We were both wearing military pants and jacket and i had two 1911 .45's in my back pockets and he had a 9mm and a .45 in his.We both took off together to the school. When we arrived the swat team and many cops, were herding the kids to the busses to get them out of there. My friend and i walked past all the cops and swat team,,stepped onto the buss and motioned our 4 kids to come with us.Not one person questioned who we were or paid any attention that we both had guns that were very visable.Found out later three people wearing camo military clothes had been seen walking across the back of the school yard with guns.I never heard if they caught them or talked to them but it was more than likely just some hunters. And here we was dressed just like the guys they were looking for. I know what we did was not real bright but we actually did not even think about what we were doing,,was just afraid for our kids as most of our cops here for sure do not know what they are doing and the fact that we pulled off what we did pretty much proved that. Now this Marine? I love it,,he is going about looking after his kids in a much smarter way than we did and i think he is an example of what all of us parents need to be doing if thats what it takes.

A former Marine and father of two decided to help ease his daughter's fears after the tragic school shooting in Connecticut late last week by standing guard outside her west Nashville school.

Jordan Pritchard served eight years in the Marine Corps and was honorably discharged last May.

Over the weekend, Pritchard said his daughter told him she was scared to return to school following the Connecticut tragedy.

"As a dad, I can't have that. I can't have my daughter come to school worried about somebody coming in and hurting her," Pritchard said.

He added, "To settle her peace of mind, who better than her dad to come out here and stand in front of the school?"

Pritchard told Nashville's News 2 he dusted off his Marine Corps uniform and has been standing guard in front of the school since Monday.

I appreciate his good will and understand his gesture.

But somebody has to bring up the obvious or at least what most parents want to do.

---
What would happen if I put on my gear and stood watch over my loved ones school?
---

They would call the police on me and we would have a terrible sad incident on our hands, and all I wanted to do was stand watch over the school.

That's the sad part.

Civilians cannot stand, only those chosen or those who the "State" seems fit.

Just a point to bring up, I commend his mentality.

Yes he is doing what is right and what you did on that day was right. You were protecting your kids.

But please, for a second, look past all that and ask yourself why you and your friend that day dressed the way you were, or me tomorrow cannot go outside and protect the school.

The Citizenry is responsible for it's own safety.

The reason we cannot go and protect our children (Which is an insane thought) is because we are not deemed fit to do so by the state. The Government says who can and who cannot protect our very own children.

Follow that thought, think about that thought and soak it in.

I just want to say this, been thinking it over.

A lot of gestures Americans make like this often come across as overly dramatic and somewhat cheesy to us godless foreigners... but that's just the American way, big, bold and brash.

Dramatic and symbolic...

That's just how you guys express yourselves.
Sometimes it's too much but seeing this story I think maybe in other countries there are too little of these big expressive gestures sometimes.

I mean, this man will likely never have to actually do anything, the school will likely never be attacked or whatever... but that's not really the point is it?

It's a symbolic gesture... and dude I tell ya, if I was there I'd stand shoulder to shoulder with him (or likely head to shoulder, he's prolly a big guy).

All I can do is express my solidarity with you yanks at this time of deep pain, I feel genuine anguish at this tragedy.

Anyway, that was a clumsy speech but I meant it... I'm going back to the UFO threads.
