Murderers commonly receive life sentences for their acts that doesn't stop people from doing it. OP, honestly I can understand what you wish the world to be, a world without guns, violence, murder. I wish there was just peace too. The problem is we all live in a modern society, yet we all are wired with 50000 year old software. Human beings are animals. Some are just more likely to follow the rules set forth by society than others. I would rather be able to defend myself from the criminals and insane among us than not.

IMO gun possession = the ability of the individual law abiding citizen to potentially defend himself and others against criminal assault.

Currently in Australia, only high ranking politicans and public office holders and those wealthy enough to afford personal body guards have this ability.

Perhaps, if so armed, the female news reporter who was recently kidnapped and murdered by two males might have had a chance.

Two immediate critical flaws come to mind with your brilliant plan


1) Anyone that wants to see his enemy put away in prison for life only needs to set him up by tossing a gun on his property and phoning in a tip.

2) Making things a "life sentences" willy nilly inspires fanatical, suicidal resistance from desperate people who have nothing left to lose.

1) That's just convenient hand waving on your part. If you were actually responsible for running a government and had this attitude, you'd simply lose power to the groups that could successfully systemitize the tactics which subvert your ham fisted policies. If you simply say "too bad, ignore the obvious setups and sally forth with life sentences for everybody" you'd end up with a failed state.

2) Nope, you already agreed that criminals have no problem obtaining guns through smuggling or shop fabrication. You already said that your brilliant plan of draconian penalty would simply be a deterrent which would prevent the act in and of itself. This is invalid and you're not making any argument to address that.
