Do You Think You Can Stay off Facebook for Three Days?
I ask this, because one of the gifts I am giving a few people this year is this book:

Unfriend Yourself: Three Days to Detox, Discern, and Decide About Social Media

It's not a plea to get off facebook, but to use it differently.

The author is basically saying that God has made us for intimacy and we are confusing interconnectedness with intimacy.

Facebook is stealing something precious out of our lives.

He said the difference between being on Facebook/social media and living in real life can be compared to looking at a photograph of a sunset and experiencing viewing one with our own eyes.

My son and I had a discussion the other night about this very thing.

He's noticed recently, that his posts have changed. He is doing what many others do and that is--to feel significant by getting rewarded with acknowledgment and approval each time his or her status receives feedback from ‘friends’.

As of yesterday, all that has changed. He deactivated his account.

I still don't have a Facebook account, I know I never will. I spend more than enough time on GLP. But GLP has been a learning experience for me--I especially like the up-to-date news and the wonderful people I have met here.

Anyways.

How about the rest of you?

Think you can fast from Facebook for 3 days?

Or if you know someone who is seriously addicted, why not offer them this book.
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task
the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. Acts 20:24

"This man really is the Savior of the world!" John 4:42

Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him;
and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.
I am the Alpha and the Omega, " says the Lord God, who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." Revelation 1:7

The whole point is to disconnect for three days just to allow time to assess the situation in your own life regarding how you use Facebook.

^^This

The whole problem, is that sheeple, mistake a facebook page for a person. They see that page and they see it as a person, like, a real person. It creates the illusion that you are really having some human contact, in fact, you are putting yourself away even more.

That's so true about the feeling significant based on friends' approval of things you post. And so VERY true about confusing interconnectedness with intimacy. Networks are NOT communities. Being connected is not being intimate.

I know I am not alone when I say FB has done more to hurt my good feelings towards people than to foster them. I don't see my friends on there, I see desperate, lonely personas seeking approval. I have lost respect for some of my friends because I can see right through their B.S.

As for myself, I've been wanting to shut it down but I have found it barely useful enough to keep it open. I am finally ready to deactivate my account though, when I really ask myself what it's done to improve my life, I can say absolutely nothing, but it's caused some anxiety in me for sure.

I stay off of it for weeks at a time. For me it's just a place to store contacts, for others it's their social life and a source of self-esteem, and that is really pitiful.

This morning, within the first hour of being awake, my power went out--just for about a minute.

My heart raced.

Can you imagine if the power grid WAS destroyed?

What I don't understand is that some don't seem to realize that many can read what they are posting. I have relatives that have posted their phone number and home address for the whole world to see. Then some will talk about how lonely they are and they wish they had a soul mate, etc. What is that inviting?

Trouble with a capitol T!

I'm rarely on facebook. I use it mainly to keep in touch with a small handful of folks that are spread out across the world.

Hubby uses facebook to post articles (political, strange stories, etc).

We definitely do not "chit chat" or do other inane things on FB.

I'm rarely on Twitter and I have well over 700 followers (mostly internet marketing related stuff). I follow quite a few celebs, like Misha Collins and Nathan Fillion.

But I agree, most social media sites are time suckers. So, I spend all day on GLP ... total different. =)
