no, not normal, the sun is sunny, and beer is frothy.

Perhaps it is dying, just before it goes supernova, i mean it has been unusually bright no?

Would this happen to be the same, highly chaotic "magnetic froth" which one sees developing as the total magnetic energy approaches zero.

If so, it ties in with this thread, that shows the sun turning into a red giant on Dec 23

Yes. Really weird. It's been overlong.

Maybe those in the know are peeing in their pants?

They never thought that anything would happen?

And now they know that sudden doom is coming soon?

Re: The SUN is FROTHING - Is this normal?
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

On September 1–2, 1859, the largest recorded geomagnetic storm occurred. Aurorae were seen around the world, even over the Caribbean; those over the Rocky Mountains were so bright that their glow awoke gold miners, who began preparing breakfast because they thought it was morning. People who happened to be awake in the northeastern US could read a newspaper by the aurora's light.

Telegraph systems all over Europe and North America failed, in some cases shocking telegraph operators. Telegraph pylons threw sparks and telegraph paper spontaneously caught fire. Some telegraph systems continued to send and receive messages despite having been disconnected from their power supplies.

On September 3, 1859, the Baltimore American and Commercial Advertiser reported, "Those who happened to be out late on Thursday night had an opportunity of witnessing another magnificent display of the auroral lights. The phenomenon was very similar to the display on Sunday night, though at times the light was, if possible, more brilliant, and the prismatic hues more varied and gorgeous. The light appeared to cover the whole firmament, apparently like a luminous cloud, through which the stars of the larger magnitude indistinctly shone. The light was greater than that of the moon at its full, but had an indescribable softness and delicacy that seemed to envelop everything upon which it rested. Between 12 and 1 o'clock, when the display was at its full brilliancy, the quiet streets of the city resting under this strange light, presented a beautiful as well as singular appearance."

Is this doomy or not, please?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29310915

I say doo-me, and you say doomy ... So let's call the whole thing off!

I check the spaceweather site often, 2-3 times a week, for more than a year now, and I have NEVER heard or seen them describe "froth"!

The link to the article that you provided has me even more nervous!!

If the sun is going to send a giant gas bubble, tomorrow would be a great day to do it!!

There is nothing we can do to stop it soo...

Until then I will be watching National Lampoons's Christmas Vacation and sipping hot spiced apple cider and rum (Sailer Jerry).popcorn

Nothing unusual - happens all the time: [link to www.google.de]

Photos from 2008: [link to www.strehlbuster.com]

The filter shows the sun in a wave lenght, that is almost UV - thus it is used mainly for photographic purpose (not visual observation).

The CaK filter shows the layer between the photosphere (white light) and chromosphere (H-alpha).
It's not so common, because it is quite expensive (US$ 350 compared to a white light filter US$ 20) and doesn't show solar flares as nice as an H-alpha filter.

A whole year. Thak you. It's extra unusual as I thought. I thought I'd only been watching it for a few months but time flies... maybe it has been that long. My browser opens up with it now and has done so for about 6 months.

And, like you, I've NEVER heard them use this word.

Pardon me, but aren't two of those articles from June of 2011? Seems like we've been in the cappuccino machine for at least a year and are still alive.

That's as far as the end of the solar system goes - that's not the main point.

The main point is that Space Weather is talking about the sun frothing TODAY.

I have never seen this before.

Has anyone?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29310915

Nooooooooooo, the frothy image was taken on the 19th of Dec, but the magnetic froth can only bee seen by a filter or imaging technique known as Calcium K, and this is the most vivid image captured.

Magnetic frothing is actually normal with sunspots.

Re: The SUN is FROTHING - Is this normal?
Castillo used a "Calcium K" (CaK) filter that passes light from singly-ionized calcium in the sun's atmosphere. CaK filters are excellent detectors of magnetic froth--the bubbly, turbulent sea of magnetism that surrounds many large sunspot groups.

Re: The SUN is FROTHING - Is this normal?
Highlights from

[link to science.nasa.gov]

The Voyager probes appear to have entered a strange realm of frothy magnetic bubbles,"

This is very surprising."

the bubbles are large, about 100 million miles wide

When a magnetic field gets severely folded like this, interesting things can happen. Lines of magnetic force criss-cross and "reconnect".

We are still trying to wrap our minds around the implications of these findings

----

It sounds like they know as much about magnetic froth as I do.

Frank Scully wrote a book about lines of magnetic force back in the 1940s or 1950s. Wish I still had his book!
