Ever since the night of the 25th when the storm came through Arkansas we have been without power. it's cold and icy everywhere.

150,000 are still without power

been blowing money on gas and to charge our phones and eating out.

Most places are closed, and they say the power could be our for a few more days.

It's not easy sleeping in freezing temps lol

ECMWF has a decent snowstorm for the coastal Northeast. Widespread half a foot totals across New Jersey would occur with this, with isolated locations picking up over a foot. [link to raleighwx.americanwx.com]

Two EF-3 tornadoes confirmed from Christmas Day; heavy snows hit 19 states

Winter Storm Euclid continues its U.S. tour today, and is pounding New England with heavy snows, high winds, and coastal flooding. The impressive storm is highly likely to set a record for most tornadoes spawned on Christmas Day, as 11 tornadoes have been confirmed, and there are at least 14 other suspected tornadoes that occurred. The most tornadoes ever recorded on Christmas Day was twelve, back in 1969. The storm spawned an additional confirmed tornado on December 26 in North Carolina. No more tornadoes are expected today.

Euclid has dumped more than six inches of snow in 19 states--Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maine, and Texas. According to the latest NWS Storm Summary, the greatest snowfall so far has been at Albion, Illinois, where 18.3" has fallen. This will likely be exceeded in Maine, where up to two feet of snow is expected before the storm ends on Friday. Fortunately, the tornadoes from the storm are not being blamed for any deaths, though strong thunderstorm winds killed two people on Christmas Day due to falling trees. At least two of the Christmas Day tornadoes were rated EF-3. The EF-3 that hit Pennington, in Southeast Texas, completely destroyed a feed store and a restaurant, and had winds up to 150 mph. The other EF-3 hit McNeil, Mississippi, and was rated a weak EF-3 with winds of 140 mph. The tornado cut a path 24 miles long, injured 8 people, and damaged or destroyed 46 homes. Only four other EF-3 tornadoes have been recorded on Christmas Day since 1950, according to the Tornado History Project. The latest in the year an EF-3 tornado has touched down is December 31. This occurred just two years ago, in 2010, when five EF-3 tornadoes raked Arkansas, Missouri, and Illinois.

Powerful southwest winds from the storm created a significant storm surge of 5 - 6 feet which caused moderate coastal flooding this morning at Sandy Hook, NJ and King's Point, NY. The storm surge in New York City at Battery Park reached 5.9 feet, but occurred near low tide, so only minor flooding was reported. Some peak wind gusts from the storm:

It looks like the potential is arising for a winter storm to hit the Midwest and Ohio Valley at the end of the first week of January. This possibility is being shown by the two major models (ECMWF and GFS) which we will review right now.

The above image is the ECMWF's 500mb height forecast for the evening of January 4th. Depressions in these isobars (lines of constant pressure) signify low pressure systems, while arcing formations depict high pressure systems. The ECMWF shows the storm system in the southern Midwest at this time. Typically, this would be a good snow maker for many in these two regions. However, the jet stream is aligned in something called a split flow pattern.

The split flow pattern involves high pressure stationed in the Pacific Northwest, leading to a literal split in the jet stream, and thus two branches of energy form: what I call the Southern Jet stream and the Northern Jet Stream. In this ECMWF Forecast, the Northern jet stream is stationed in Canada, and is shown by several isobars very close together. The Southern jet stream goes through Baja California, Mexico and the Southeast in a situation that could easily provoke severe weather. This split flow pattern keeps the cold too far north for these types of systems to access.

The GFS forecast for this storm system has the system further north, into the Midwest at this point. The GFS later brings the system down south into Kentucky like the ECMWF, but there are still big timing differences. The ECMWF and GFS do seem to be in good agreement as far as showing a common track, but the key thing is timing. It may just be 24 hours between the two forecasts, but that 24 hours can and will dramatically alter forecasts for this system, as demonstrated by these two models.

I think the ECMWF's forecast is more realistic. I find the split flow regime more likely at this point in time after a temporary Rex Block gives way.
