Really, try to put yourself in that situation, as much as you possibly can of course. The loud gunfire conversation is going nowhere because^^this guy doesn't get the point. It's not that their ears hurt, it's that they wouldn't have been able to hear the alleged conversation between the shooter and Soto. Do you understand yet??? He told you he's a military guy, used to taking orders, being told what to believe, say, do, and brown-nose ass licking--that's how promotion works--so he doesn't want to understand that the loud gunfire in closed room made the delicate kiddees unable to hear anything for a good while--unlike the tough-guy soldier like him who can stand next to a muzzle-blast and tough it out.
