Maya people say it's only 'the end of an era'
Apparently, according to an ancient Mayan calendar, the world as we know it is supposed to come to an end on Friday, December 21, 2012. Yet descendants of the Maya people themselves do not buy this supposed prophecy.

Residents of the Mayan village of Yaxuna in the Mexican state of Yucatan know that the calendar their ancestors left them shows the absolution of a key phase. But they say it means the end of an old era and the heralding of a new one, not a time for all of us to die.

"It's an era. We are lucky to see how it ends," said wood carver Santos Esteban in Yaxuna, a sleepy village of fewer than 700 Maya, in a territory that once belonged to the ancient kingdom founded around 2000 BC.

He feels this is a momentous occasion and is looking forward to the start of the new era. "Lots of people say it's the end of the world, but we don’t believe that," CNN quoted him as saying.

For those less optimistic, an "official" website in the United States has collected links to all doom articles and videos that Internet users can consume. December212012.com offers tips on survival and carries ads for gear that one might need, ranging from gas masks to first-aid kits and hand-cranked radios.

Though 21/12/12 marks a somewhat congruent date on the Western calendar, the Mayan calendar enumerates the event in a different way, CNN reports.

The ancient people measured time in cycles called baktun of 394 years each, and the winter solstice due today marks the end of the 13th baktun. Those who have studied the calendar say the date for the end of the period is not Friday, but actually Sunday.

The calendar is based on the position of the sun, moon and stars - and was meant to tell the Maya people about agricultural and economic trends, says archaeologist Alfredo Barrera.

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration also says on its website that the world will not end today.

"It will be another winter solstice. The claims behind the end of the world quickly unravel when pinned down to the 2012 timeline," Nasa says.

The hubbub about a calamity occurring comes from a Maya wood carving, called Monument 6, made in AD 700, which predicts a major event at the end of this baktun. But half of the broken tablet is missing, so one may only speculate on what the complete message might be. Whatever the message, it's not about the end of the world, Barrera said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday also declared the world would not end this week as predicted by the Maya. In fact, he said, he did not expect the end for another 4.5 billion years.

When Putin was asked why he chose to hold his first major news conference since his return to the Kremlin one day before the end of the world, he said: "I know when the end of the world will come." After a dramatic pause, he continued: "It will be in 4.5 billion years approximately. As far as I remember, it is the system of the functioning of our sun.

Meanwhile, about 1,000 people have been arrested in China as part of a crackdown on a Christian sect that has been spreading doomsday rumours and targeting Communist Party rule, state media said yesterday.

The "Almighty God" group has been accused of urging followers to slay the "red dragon" of Communism, reports said.

Re: Maya people say it's only 'the end of an era'
The world will not end 12/21/2012. The Maya did feel this time frame would be the beginning of TEOTWAWKI, as we experiences horrific changes and cataclysm, eventually bring a "new world."
The Bible says the same thing regarding a "new heavens and a new earth."
There will eventually be a pole shift. I think astronomical references in the Bible point to 12/21/2019, exactly seven years (of tribulation?) from the Mayan end date.
Most of us will not survive the transition to the new world.
