When ice cubes melt in a cup full of water will the water overflow?
If not, then why does the sea level rise when ice bergs melt?

100 points to the correct answer.

No. Ice is less dense that liquid water. Global warming claims about rising sea levels due to melted fresh water are bullshit.

Only ice on land will affect water levels.

The concern is land based glacier melt entering the seasyoda. One of the largest glaciers in the world is in Antarctica and it is on land. The base of it is melting and when it does slide into ocean and melt it will add volume to the ocean raising the levels.

Ice that floats in water is already raising the water level enough to support the weight of the ice.

When the ice melts, the water level stays the same because the volume that was displaced by the ice is filled with the melted ice which has the same weight and volume as the ocean water it displaced.

Ice caps are fresh water not sea water they have formed before the oceans did thus adding to sea levels when melted.

ice and water and melted ice are the same weight.if you put water in a glass after the ice and fill to the top the volume is the same and will remain the same after melting. the opposite effect will happen if you remove the ice the water level lowers.

Umm, I thought simple stuff like this was pretty much common knowledge by the 8th grade.

It never ceases to amaze me the lack of what is really basic knowledge.

Sea levels dont rise when ice bergs melt only glacial melt on land effects sea levels.

I have a more interesting question to ask earth is constantly producing water threw volcanic activity, when if ever will the earth be completely covered? 250 million years a billion years or will the sun blow up before that day ever happens.

30% of an iceberg sticks up above the level of the water. It's the 30% above that makes levels rise.

When ice freezes it gets bigger by 10%

When it ments into water it gets smaller by 10%

This is why if you put a drink in the freezer and forget about it it will expand in the container.

So if you melt the ice cubes in a drink. The volume is less because the ice turns to water.

Its 10% you dickhead..and the extra weight of the 10% sticking out displaces the water beneath evenly thus keeping the water at the same level.

Gee some people are so UTTERLY fucking BRAINLESS!

I knew all this shit when I was six years old.

But then they actually EDUCATED people back then.
